Whatever states are sattvic, rajasic, or tamasic, know them as arising from me; but I am not in them, they are in me.
The whole world is deluded by these three qualities; it does not recognize me, who is beyond them and imperishable.
This divine illusion of mine, composed of qualities, is difficult to overcome; but those who take refuge in me cross over this illusion.
The evil-doers, the deluded, the lowest of men, whose knowledge is stolen by illusion and who embrace demonic nature, do not seek me.
O Arjuna, four kinds of virtuous people worship me: the distressed, the seeker of knowledge, the seeker of wealth, and the wise, O best of the Bharatas.
Of these, the wise one, ever united and devoted to the One, excels; for I am exceedingly dear to the wise, and he is dear to me.
All these are noble indeed, but the wise one is considered as my very self; for, with a mind steadfast, he abides in me as the highest goal.
At the end of many births, the man of knowledge takes refuge in me, realizing that Vāsudeva is all; such a great soul is very rare.
Those whose knowledge is taken away by various desires worship other deities, following this or that rule, each constrained by their own nature.
Whatever form any devotee seeks to worship with faith, I make that faith of his firm and unwavering.
Endowed with that faith, he seeks to worship that form, and from it he obtains his desired objects, granted by me alone.
But the fruit gained by these people of little understanding is finite; those who worship the gods go to the gods, but my devotees come to me.
The undiscerning think of me, the unmanifest, as having become manifest, not knowing my higher, imperishable, and supreme nature.
I am not manifest to all, being veiled by my yoga-māyā; this deluded world does not recognize me, the unborn and imperishable.
I know all beings, past, present, and future, O Arjuna; but no one knows me.
By the delusion of duality arising from desire and aversion, O Bharata, all beings fall into confusion at birth, O scorcher of foes.
But those whose evil has come to an end, whose actions are meritorious, freed from the delusion of duality, firm in their vows, worship me.
Those who strive for liberation from old age and death, taking refuge in me, know the whole of Brahman, the Self, and all action.
Those who know me with adhibhūta, adhidaiva, and adhiyajña, with steadfast mind, know me even at the time of departure.
What is that Brahman? What is the Self? What is action, O Supreme Person? What is called adhibhūta, and what is said to be adhidaiva?
Who and how is adhiyajña here in this body, O Madhusūdana? And how are you to be known at the time of departure by those of disciplined minds?
The imperishable is the supreme Brahman; one's own nature is called the Self; the creative force that brings beings into existence is called action.
The perishable existence is called the field of beings, the person is the field of divinities; and I alone am the field of sacrifice here, O best among those who bear bodies.
At the final moment, whoever departs remembering me alone, having left the body, attains my state—there is no doubt about this.
Whatever state one remembers when leaving the body at the end, O son of Kunti, to that very state he goes, always shaped by that disposition.
Therefore, at all times, remember me and fight; with mind and intellect dedicated to me, you will surely come to me, without doubt.
With a mind joined by the practice of yoga, not wandering elsewhere, thinking of the supreme divine person, one goes to him, O Partha.
Whoever remembers the sage, ancient, ruler, subtler than the subtle, sustainer of all, of inconceivable form, sun-like in brilliance, beyond darkness—
At the time of departure, with unwavering mind, joined by devotion and the power of yoga, placing the life-breath between the eyebrows, he attains that supreme divine person.
That imperishable which the knowers of the Vedas declare, which ascetics free from passion enter, desiring which they practice celibacy—I will briefly speak of that state.
