The ignorant, the faithless, and the doubting self perish; neither this world, nor the next, nor happiness exists for the doubting self.
O Dhanañjaya, actions do not bind one who has renounced actions through yoga, whose doubts are cut by knowledge, and who is self-possessed.
Therefore, with the sword of knowledge, cut off this doubt in your heart, born of ignorance; stand firm in yoga and arise, O Bhārata.
You praise renunciation of actions, O Krishna, and again also yoga; of these two, tell me decisively which is better.
Renunciation and the yoga of action both lead to the highest good; but of the two, the yoga of action is superior to the renunciation of action.
He should be known as a perpetual renunciant who neither hates nor desires; free from dualities, O mighty-armed, he is easily released from bondage.
Only the childish speak of Sāṅkhya and Yoga as separate, not the wise; one who is properly established in either attains the fruit of both.
The state reached by the Sāṅkhyas is also attained by the Yogins; he who sees Sāṅkhya and Yoga as one truly sees.
But renunciation, O mighty-armed, is hard to achieve without yoga; the sage who is united with yoga quickly attains Brahman.
One disciplined in yoga, with purified self, self-controlled, and master of the senses, whose self is the self of all beings, though acting, is not tainted.
The knower of truth, engaged in yoga, should think, 'I do nothing at all,' even while seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, eating, going, sleeping, breathing.
Speaking, letting go, grasping, opening and closing the eyes—even so, holding that the senses move among the objects of the senses.
He who, having abandoned attachment, performs actions dedicating them to Brahman, is not stained by sin, just as a lotus leaf is not wetted by water.
Yogins perform actions with body, mind, intellect, or even with the senses alone, abandoning attachment, for the purification of the self.
The disciplined one, abandoning the fruit of action, attains lasting peace; the undisciplined, impelled by desire, attached to the fruit, is bound.
Having renounced all actions by mind, the self-controlled one dwells happily in the city of nine gates, the body, neither acting nor causing action.
The Lord does not create agency, actions, or the union with the fruits of action for the world; rather, nature acts.
The all-pervading does not take anyone's sin or virtue; knowledge is covered by ignorance, and thus beings are deluded.
But for those whose ignorance is destroyed by knowledge of the self, that knowledge, like the sun, reveals the supreme.
Those whose intellect is fixed on That, whose self is in That, who are steadfast and devoted to That, go to non-return, their impurities destroyed by knowledge.
The wise see with equal vision a learned and humble brāhmaṇa, a cow, an elephant, a dog, and even a dog-eater.
Even here, those whose mind is established in equality have conquered creation; for Brahman is flawless and equal, therefore they abide in Brahman.
He does not rejoice upon obtaining what is pleasant, nor does he become distressed upon encountering what is unpleasant; steadfast in understanding, undeluded, knowing Brahman, he abides in Brahman.
With the mind unattached to external contacts, he finds the happiness that is within himself; united with Brahman through yoga, he attains imperishable happiness, not perceived by the senses.
Indeed, pleasures born of contact are sources of suffering; they have a beginning and an end, O Kaunteya, and the wise do not delight in them.
Whoever is able to endure, even here, before the release from the body, the force arising from desire and anger, that person is disciplined and truly happy.
He whose happiness is within, whose delight is within, and whose light is within, that yogi, becoming Brahman, attains the liberation in Brahman.
The sages, whose impurities are exhausted, whose doubts are cut off, whose minds are disciplined, and who are devoted to the welfare of all beings, attain liberation in Brahman.
For those ascetics who are free from desire and anger, whose minds are controlled, and who know the self, liberation in Brahman is present on all sides.
Having placed external contacts outside, and fixing the gaze between the eyebrows, making the inward and outward breaths move together within the nostrils,
