एतान्यनीकानि महानुभावं गूहन्ति मेघा इव रश्मिमन्तम्। एतानि हत्वा पुरुषप्रवीर काङ्क्षस्व युद्धं भरतर्षभेण
These divisions of troops conceal that great-souled one as clouds cover the radiant sun; after overcoming these, O foremost of men, desire battle with the bull among the Bharatas.
धार्तराष्ट्रबलं दृष्ट्वा युद्धाय समुपस्थितम्। अर्जुनस्य हितार्थाय कृष्णो वचनमब्रवीत्
Seeing the army of Dhritarashtra assembled for battle, Krishna spoke these words for Arjuna’s benefit.
शुचिर्भूत्वा महाबाहो संग्रामाभिमुखे स्थितः। पराजयाय श्त्रुणां दुर्गास्तोत्रमुदीरय

भद्रकालि नमस्तुभ्यं महाकालि नमोऽस्तु ते । चण्डि चण्डे नमस्तुभ्यं तारिणि वरवर्णिनि
O Bhadrakali, I bow to you; O Mahakali, I bow to you; O fierce one, O terrible one, I bow to you, O savior, O best of complexioned ones.
कात्यायनि महाभागे करालि विजये जये। शिखिपिच्छध्वजधरे नानाभरणभूषिते
O Katyayani, greatly fortunate one, terrible in form, victorious and triumphant; bearer of the peacock-feathered banner, adorned with various ornaments.
अट्टशूलप्रहरणे स्वङ्गखेटकधारिणि । गोपेन्द्रस्यानुजे ज्येष्ठे नन्दगोपकुलोद्भवे
Wielder of the mighty trident, bearer of your own shield and club; elder sister of Govinda, firstborn, sprung from the house of Nanda the cowherd.
महिषासृक्प्रिये नित्यं कौशिकि पीतवासिनि । अट्टहासे कोकमुखे नमस्तेऽस्तु रणप्रिये
Ever fond of the blood of Mahisha, O Kaushiki, clad in yellow garments; with roaring laughter, lotus-faced one, I bow to you, lover of battle.
उभे शाकम्भरि श्वेते कृष्णे कैटभनाशिनि । हिरण्याश्चि विरूपाक्षि सुधूम्राक्षि नमोऽस्तु ते
O Shakambhari, both white and black, destroyer of Kaitabha; golden-eyed, many-formed, with fierce and smoky eyes, I bow to you.
वेदश्रुति महापुण्ये ब्रह्मण्ये जातवेदसि । जम्बूकटकचैत्येषु नित्यं सन्निहितालये
O embodiment of Vedic knowledge and sacred sound, supremely pure, devoted to Brahman, O blazing one; ever present in the shrines at Jambukaṭaka.
त्वं ब्रह्मविद्या विद्यानां महानिद्रा च देहिनाम्। स्कन्दमातर्भगवति दुर्गे कान्तारवासिनि
You are the knowledge of Brahman among all knowledges, the great sleep of embodied beings; mother of Skanda, O goddess Durga, dweller in the wilderness.
स्वाहाकारः स्वधा चैव कला काष्ठा सरस्वती। सावित्री वेदमाता च तथा वेदान्त उच्यते
You are the call of oblation, the invocation to the ancestors, the divisions of time, Sarasvati, Savitri, mother of the Vedas, and the end of the Vedas as well.
स्तुतासि त्वं महादेवि विशुद्धेनान्तरात्मना । जयो भवतु मे नित्यं त्वत्प्रसादाद्रणाजिरे
You have been praised, O great goddess, with a pure inner self; may victory always be mine on the battlefield by your grace.
कान्तारभयदुर्गेषु भक्तानां चालयेषु च । नित्यं वससि पाताले युद्धे जयसि दानवान्
In the fearful wildernesses and fortresses, and in the dwellings of the devoted, you always reside in the netherworld; in battle, you conquer the demons.
त्वं जम्भनी मोहिनी च माया ह्रीः श्रीस्तथैव च । संध्या प्रभावती चैव सावित्री जननी तथा
You are Jambhanī, Mohinī, Māyā, Hrī, Śrī, and also Saṃdhyā, Prabhāvatī, Sāvitrī, and the Mother.
तुष्टिः पुष्टिर्धृतिर्दीप्तिश्चन्द्रादित्यविवर्धिनी । भूतिर्भूतिमतां सङ्ख्ये वीक्ष्यसे सिद्धचारणैः
You are Satisfaction, Nourishment, Steadfastness, Radiance, the increaser of moon and sun; you are Prosperity among the prosperous in battle, and are beheld by the Siddhas and Cāraṇas.
ततः पार्थस्य विज्ञाय भक्तिं मानववत्सला। अन्तरिक्षगतोवाच गोविन्दस्याग्रतः स्थिता
Then, recognizing the devotion of Partha, compassionate toward mankind, she spoke from the sky, standing before Govinda.
स्वल्पेनैव तु कालेन शत्रूञ्जेष्यसि पाण्डव । नरस्त्वमसि दुर्धर्ष नारायणसहायवान्
In a very short time, you will conquer your enemies, O Pāṇḍava; you are a man difficult to overcome, aided by Nārāyaṇa.
अजेयस्त्वं रणेऽरीणामपि वज्रभृतः स्वयम् । इत्येवमुक्त्वा वरदा क्षणेनान्तरधीयत
You are unconquerable in battle even by the wielder of the thunderbolt himself; having thus spoken, the giver of boons vanished in an instant.
लब्ध्वा वरं तु कौन्तेयो मेने विजयमात्मनः । आरुरोह ततः पार्थो रथं परमसंमतम्
Having received the boon, Kaunteya considered victory as his own; then Partha ascended the chariot, most highly esteemed.
कृष्णार्जुनावेकरथौ दिव्यौ शङ्खौः प्रदध्मतुः । य इदं पठते स्तोत्रं कल्य उत्थाय मानवः
Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna, together on one chariot, blew their divine conches; whoever recites this hymn, rising in the morning, O man,
यक्षरक्षःपिशाचेभ्यो न भयं विद्यते सदा। न चापि रिपवस्तेभ्यः सर्पाद्या ये च दंष्ट्रिणः
He never has fear from Yakṣas, Rākṣasas, Piśācas; nor from enemies among them, nor from serpents and other creatures with fangs.
न भयं विद्यते तस्य सदा राजकुलादपि । विवादेक जयमाप्नोति बद्धो मुच्यति बन्धनात्
He never has fear even from the royal court; in disputes he attains victory, and if bound, he is released from bondage.
दुर्गं तरति चावश्यं तथा चोरैर्विमुच्यते। संग्रामे विजयेन्नित्यं लक्ष्मीं प्राप्नोति केवलाम्
He surely crosses over fortresses and is freed from thieves; he always wins in battle and attains wealth alone.
आरोग्यबलसंपन्नो जीवेद्वर्षशतं तथा । एतद्दृष्टं प्रसादात्तु मया व्यासस्य धीमतः
Endowed with health and strength, he lives for a hundred years; this I have seen by the grace of wise Vyāsa.
मोहादेतौ न जानन्ति नरनारायणावृषी । तव पुत्रा दुरात्मानः सर्वे मन्युवशानुगाः
Out of delusion, your sons, evil-minded and all following the sway of anger, do not know the sage Nara-Nārāyaṇa.
प्राप्तकालमिदं वाक्यं कालपाशेन कुण्ठिताः । द्वैपायनो नारदश्च कण्वो रामस्तथानघः । अवारयंस्तव सुतं न चासौ तद्गृहीतवान्
This word has come at the proper time, but they are dulled by the noose of Time; Dvaipāyana, Nārada, Kaṇva, and sinless Rāma tried to restrain your son, but he did not heed them.
यत्र धर्मो द्युतिः कान्तिर्यत्र ह्रीः श्रीस्तथा मतिः। यतो धर्मस्ततः कृष्णो यतः कृष्णस्ततो जयः
Where there is Dharma, brilliance, beauty, modesty, wealth, and wisdom; where there is Dharma, there is Kṛṣṇa; where there is Kṛṣṇa, there is victory.
केषां प्रहृष्टास्तत्राग्रे योधा युध्यन्ति सञ्जय। उदग्रमनसः के वा के वा दीना विचेतसः
Which warriors are joyful and fighting in the front, Sañjaya? Who are eager, and who are dejected and confused?
