तत्र नित्यं प्रभवति स्वयं देवः प्रजापतिः । तं पर्युपासते नित्यं देवाः सर्वे महर्षयः
There, the god Prajapati himself always presides; all the gods and great sages constantly attend upon him.
वाग्भिर्मनोनुकूलाभिः पूजयन्तो जनाधिप। जम्बूद्वीपात्प्रवर्तन्ते रत्नानि विविधान्युत
Honoring him with words and thoughts in harmony, O lord of men, various kinds of gems arise from Jambudvipa.
द्वीपेषु तेषु सर्वेषु प्रजानां कुरुसत्तम। ब्रह्मचर्येण सत्येन प्रजानां हि दमेन च
In all those continents, O best of the Kurus, the people live by celibacy, truth, and self-restraint.
आरोग्यायुःप्रमाणाभ्यां द्विगुणं द्विगुणं ततः। एको जनपदो राजन्द्वीपेष्वेतेषु भारत। उक्ता जनपदा येषु धर्मश्चैकः प्रदृश्यते
With health and lifespan twice as great each time, O Bharata, there is but one community in each of these continents, and in them, only one dharma is seen.
ईश्वरो दण्डमुद्यम्य स्वयमेव प्रजापतिः । द्वीपानेतान्महाराज रक्षंस्तिष्ठति नित्यदा
The Lord Prajapati himself, raising the staff of authority, O great king, always protects these continents.
स राजा स शिवो राजन्स पिता प्रतितामहः । गोपायति नरश्रेष्ठ प्रजाः सजडपण्डिताः
That king, that Shiva, O king, is the father and grandfather; he protects the people, O best of men, both the dull and the wise.
भोजनं चात्र कौरव्य प्रजाः स्वयमुपस्थितम् । सिद्धमेव महाबाहो तद्धि भुञ्जन्ति नित्यदा
There, O Kauravya, food appears of itself for the people; it is always ready, O mighty-armed one, and they partake of it every day.
ततः परं समा नाम दृश्यते लोकसंस्थितिः। चतुरश्र महाराज त्रयस्त्रिंशत्तु मण्डलम्
Beyond that is seen the region called Sama, the abode of beings; it is square, O great king, and its circuit is thirty-three.
तत्र तिष्ठन्ति कौरव्य चत्वारो लोकसंमताः। दिग्गजा भरतश्रेष्ठ वामनैरावतादयः
There, O Kauravya, stand four elephants of the directions, esteemed in the worlds, O best of the Bharatas—Vamana, Airavata, and others.
सुप्रतीकस्तदा राजन्प्रभिन्नकरटामुखः। तस्याहं परिमाणं तु न संख्यातुमिहोत्सहे
Supratika, O king, is there, with a broken and gaping mouth; as for his measure, I am unable to count it here.
असंख्यातः स नित्यं हि तिर्यगूर्ध्वमधस्तथा । तत्र वै वायवो वान्ति दिग्भ्यः सर्वाभ्य एव हि
They are indeed countless, always moving in all directions—across, above, and below; and from all these directions, O indeed, the winds blow.
असंबद्धा महाराज तान्निगृह्णन्ति ते गजाः । पुष्करैः पद्मसंकाशैर्विकसद्भिर्महाप्रभैः
Unrestrained, O great king, those winds are held back by the elephants, with their lotus-like trunks, vast and radiant as blossoming lotuses.
शतधा पुनरेवाशु ते तान्मुञ्चन्ति नित्यशः । श्वसद्भिर्मुच्यमानास्तु दिग्गजैरिह मारुताः । आगच्छन्ति महाराज ततस्तिष्ठन्ति वै प्रजाः
Yet, again and again, those elephants swiftly release them in a hundred ways; as they exhale, the winds are set free by the elephants of the directions, O king, and thus the beings remain.
परो वै विस्तरोऽत्यर्थं त्वया सञ्जय कीर्तितः। दर्शितं द्वीपसंस्थानमुत्तरं ब्रूहि सञ्जय
O Sañjaya, you have described in great detail the vast expanse; the arrangement of the continents has been shown—now speak of the northern region, Sañjaya.
उक्ता द्वीपा महाराज ग्रहं वै शृणु तत्त्वतः । स्वर्भानोः कौरवश्रेष्ठ यावदेव प्रमाणतः
The continents have been described, O great king; now hear truly about the planet Svarbhānu, O best of Kurus, and its exact measure.
परिमण्डलो महाराज स्वर्भानुः श्रूयते ग्रहः । योजनानां सहस्राणि विष्कम्भो द्वादशास्य वै
Svarbhānu, O great king, is said to be a circular planet, with a diameter of twelve thousand yojanas.
परिणाहेन षट्त्रिंशद्विपुलत्वेन चानघ । षष्टिमाहुः शतान्यस्य बुधाः पौराणिकास्तथा
Its circumference is thirty-six thousand, and its breadth, O sinless one, is said by the wise and the ancient seers to be sixty thousand.
चन्द्रमास्तु सहस्राणि राजन्नेकादश स्मृतः । विष्कम्भेण कुरुश्रेष्ठ त्रयस्त्रिंशत्तु मण्डलम्
The moon, O king, is said to have a diameter of eleven thousand yojanas, and its circle, O best of Kurus, is thirty-three thousand.
एकोनषष्टिविष्कम्भं शीतरश्मेर्महात्मनः
The radiant, cool-rayed one has a diameter of fifty-nine thousand yojanas.
सूर्यस्त्वष्टौ सहस्राणि द्वे चान्ये कुरुनन्दन। विष्कम्भेण ततो राजन्मण्डलं त्रिंशता समम्
The sun, O delight of the Kurus, has a diameter of eight thousand and two thousand more; thus, O king, its circle is thirty thousand.
अष्टपञ्चाशतं राजन्विपुलत्वेन चानघ। श्रूयते परमोदारः पतगोऽसौ विभावसुः
The splendid bird Vibhāvasu is said to have a breadth of fifty-eight thousand, O king, and is renowned as supremely glorious.
एतत्प्रमाणमर्कस्य निर्दिष्टमिह भारत । स राहुश्छादयत्येतौ यथाकालं महात्तया
This is the measure of the sun that has been declared here, O Bhārata; and Rāhu covers these two at the proper time with his great form.
चन्द्रादित्यौ महाराज संक्षेपोऽयमुदाहृतः । इत्येतत्ते महाराज पृच्छतः शास्त्रचक्षुषा
The summary of the moon and sun, O great king, has been stated; thus, O great king, this has been explained to you, as you asked, with the eye of scripture.
सर्वमुक्तं यथातत्त्वं तस्माच्छममवाप्नुहि । यथोद्दिष्टं मया प्रोक्तं सनिर्माणमिदं जगत्
All has been told as it truly is; therefore, find peace. As I have described, so is this world with its forms.
तस्मादाश्वस कौरव्य पुत्रं दुर्योधनं प्रति। श्रुत्वेदं भरतश्रेष्ठ भूमिपर्व मनोनुगम्
Therefore, take heart, O son of Kuru, regarding your son Duryodhana; having heard this, O best of the Bharatas, you will find your mind at ease in this section concerning the earth.
श्रीमान्भवति राजन्यः सिद्धार्थः साधुसंमतः । आयुर्बलं च कीर्तिश्च तस्य तेजश्च वर्धते
A royal person becomes prosperous, accomplished, and esteemed by the virtuous; his lifespan, strength, fame, and brilliance all increase.
यः शृणोति महीपाल पर्वणीदं यतव्रतः । प्रीयन्ते पितरस्तस्य तथैव च पितामहाः
Whoever, O protector of the earth, listens to this section with discipline, his ancestors and grandfathers are pleased with him.
इदं तु भारतं वर्षं यत्र वर्तामहे वयम्। पूर्वैः प्रवर्तितं पुण्यं तत्सर्वं श्रुतवानसि
But this Bhārata land, where we now dwell, was established by the ancients as holy; all this you have now heard.
अथ गावल्गणिर्विद्वान्संयुगादेत्य भारत। प्रत्यक्षदर्शी सर्वस्य भूतभव्यभविष्यवित्
Then, O Bhārata, the learned Gāvalgaṇa, who perceives all directly and knows the past, present, and future, came from the battlefield.
ध्यायते धृतराष्ट्राय सहसोत्पत्य दुःखितः । आचष्ट निहतं भीष्मं भरतानां पितामहम्
Distressed, he quickly approached Dhṛtarāṣṭra in meditation and reported that Bhīṣma, the grandsire of the Bhāratas, had been slain.
