तत्र रत्नानि दिव्यानि स्वयं रक्षति केशवः । प्रसन्नश्चाभवत्तत्र प्रजानां व्यदधत्सुखम्
There, the divine jewels are protected by Kesava himself; being pleased, he bestowed happiness upon the people there.
कुशस्तम्बः कुशद्वीपे मध्ये जनपदैः सह । संपूज्यते शाल्मलिश्च द्वीपे शाल्मलिके नृप
The sacred Kuśa-stalk is honored in Kuśa island, along with its peoples; likewise, the Śālmalī tree is revered in the Śālmalī island, O king.
क्रौञ्चद्वीपे महाक्रौञ्चो गिरी रत्नचयाकरः । संपूज्यते महाराज चातुर्वर्ण्येन नित्यदा
On Krauncha island, the great mountain Mahākrauncha, a repository of gems, is always worshipped by the four classes, O great king.
गोमन्तः पर्वतो राजन्सुमहान्सर्वधातुमान् । यत्र नित्यं निवसति श्रीमान्कमललोचनः
The mountain Gomanta, O king, is vast and rich in all minerals; there, the glorious lotus-eyed one always dwells.
मोक्षिभिः संस्तुतो नित्यं प्रभुर्नारायणो हरिः । कुशद्वीपे तु राजेन्द्र पर्वतो विद्रुमैश्चितः
Narayana Hari, the lord, is always praised there by those seeking liberation; and in Kuśa island, O king of kings, there is a mountain adorned with coral.
सुनामा नाम दुर्धर्षो द्वितीयो हेमपर्वतः । द्युतिमान्नाम कौरव्य तृतीयः कुमुदो गिरिः
The first is the renowned and formidable mountain Sunāma; the second is the golden mountain; the third, O Kaurava, is the radiant mountain Kumuda.
चतुर्थः पुष्पवान्नाम पञ्चमस्तु कुशेशयः । षष्ठो हरिगिरिर्नाम षडेते पर्वतोत्तमाः
The fourth is called Pushpavat, the fifth is Kuśeshaya, and the sixth is the mountain named Harigiri—these six are the foremost mountains.
तेषामन्तरविष्कम्भो द्विगुणः सर्वभागशः । औद्भिदं प्रथमं वर्षं द्वितीयं वेणुमण्डलम्
The distance between each of them is twice as much as the previous, throughout; the first region is Audbhida, the second is Venumaṇḍala.
तृतीयं सुरथाकारं चतुर्थं कम्बलं स्मृतम् । धृतिमत्पञ्चमं वर्षं षष्ठं प्रभाकरम्
The third region is Surathākāra, the fourth is known as Kambala; the fifth is Dhṛtimat, and the sixth is Prabhākara.
सप्तमं कापिलं वर्षं सप्तैते वर्षलम्भकाः । एतेषु देवगन्धर्वाः प्रजाश्च जगतीश्वर
The seventh region is Kāpila—these are the seven divisions; in these dwell gods, gandharvas, and peoples, O lord of the earth.
विहरन्ते रमन्ते च न तेषु म्रियते जनः। न तेषु दस्यवः सन्ति म्लेच्छजात्योपि वा नृप
They roam and delight there, and no one dies in those regions; there are no robbers nor people of foreign birth, O king.
गौरप्रायो जनः सर्वः सुकुमारश्च पार्थिव । अवशिष्टेषु सर्वेषु वक्ष्यामि मनुजेश्वर
All the people there are mostly fair and delicate, O ruler of men; I will speak of the rest among all these, O lord of men.
यथाश्रुतं महाराज तदव्यग्रमनाः श्रृणु । क्रौञ्चद्वीपे महारा क्रौञ्चो नाम महागिरिः
O great king, listen with undistracted mind to what I have heard: in the Krauncha continent, there is a great mountain named Krauncha.
क्रौञ्चात्परो वामनको वामनादन्धकारकः। अन्धकारात्परो राजन्मैनाकः पर्वतोत्तमः
Beyond Krauncha is Vamanaka, and beyond Vamanaka is Andhakaraka; beyond Andhakaraka, O king, is Mainaka, the foremost of mountains.
मैनाकात्परतो रादन्गोविन्दो गिरिरुत्तमः । गोविन्दात्परतो राजन्निबिडो नाम पर्वतः
Beyond Mainaka is the excellent mountain called Govinda; and beyond Govinda, O king, is the mountain named Nibida.
परस्तु द्विगुणस्तेषां विष्कम्भो वंशवर्धन । देशांस्तत्र प्रवक्ष्यामि तन्मे निगदतः श्रृणु
Further on is Vamshavardhana, whose breadth is twice that of the previous ones; I will now describe the regions there—listen to me as I speak.
क्रोञ्चस्य कुशलो देशो वामनस्य मनोनुगः। मनोनुगात्परश्चोष्णो देशः कुरुकुलोद्वह
Kushala is the region of Krauncha, and Manonuga is that of Vamanaka; beyond Manonuga, O best of the Kurus, is the hot region.
उष्णात्परः प्रावरकः प्रावारादन्धकारकः। अन्धकारकदेशात्तु मुनिदेशः परः स्मृतः
Beyond the hot region is Pravaraka, and beyond Pravaraka is Andhakaraka; beyond the region of Andhakaraka is known as the land of sages.
मुनिदेशात्परश्चैव प्रोच्यते दुन्दुभिस्वनः। सिद्धचारणसंकीर्णो गौरप्रायो जनाधिप
Beyond the land of sages is said to be Dundubhisvana, filled with Siddhas and Charanas, and mostly inhabited by fair-complexioned people, O lord of men.
एते देशा महाराज देवगन्धर्वसेविताः । पुष्करे पुष्करो नाम पर्वतो मणिरत्नवान्
These regions, O great king, are frequented by gods and Gandharvas; in Pushkara stands the mountain named Pushkara, adorned with jewels and gems.
तत्र नित्यं प्रभवति स्वयं देवः प्रजापतिः । तं पर्युपासते नित्यं देवाः सर्वे महर्षयः
There, the god Prajapati himself always presides; all the gods and great sages constantly attend upon him.
वाग्भिर्मनोनुकूलाभिः पूजयन्तो जनाधिप। जम्बूद्वीपात्प्रवर्तन्ते रत्नानि विविधान्युत
Honoring him with words and thoughts in harmony, O lord of men, various kinds of gems arise from Jambudvipa.
द्वीपेषु तेषु सर्वेषु प्रजानां कुरुसत्तम। ब्रह्मचर्येण सत्येन प्रजानां हि दमेन च
In all those continents, O best of the Kurus, the people live by celibacy, truth, and self-restraint.
आरोग्यायुःप्रमाणाभ्यां द्विगुणं द्विगुणं ततः। एको जनपदो राजन्द्वीपेष्वेतेषु भारत। उक्ता जनपदा येषु धर्मश्चैकः प्रदृश्यते
With health and lifespan twice as great each time, O Bharata, there is but one community in each of these continents, and in them, only one dharma is seen.
ईश्वरो दण्डमुद्यम्य स्वयमेव प्रजापतिः । द्वीपानेतान्महाराज रक्षंस्तिष्ठति नित्यदा
The Lord Prajapati himself, raising the staff of authority, O great king, always protects these continents.
स राजा स शिवो राजन्स पिता प्रतितामहः । गोपायति नरश्रेष्ठ प्रजाः सजडपण्डिताः
That king, that Shiva, O king, is the father and grandfather; he protects the people, O best of men, both the dull and the wise.
भोजनं चात्र कौरव्य प्रजाः स्वयमुपस्थितम् । सिद्धमेव महाबाहो तद्धि भुञ्जन्ति नित्यदा
There, O Kauravya, food appears of itself for the people; it is always ready, O mighty-armed one, and they partake of it every day.
ततः परं समा नाम दृश्यते लोकसंस्थितिः। चतुरश्र महाराज त्रयस्त्रिंशत्तु मण्डलम्
Beyond that is seen the region called Sama, the abode of beings; it is square, O great king, and its circuit is thirty-three.
तत्र तिष्ठन्ति कौरव्य चत्वारो लोकसंमताः। दिग्गजा भरतश्रेष्ठ वामनैरावतादयः
There, O Kauravya, stand four elephants of the directions, esteemed in the worlds, O best of the Bharatas—Vamana, Airavata, and others.
सुप्रतीकस्तदा राजन्प्रभिन्नकरटामुखः। तस्याहं परिमाणं तु न संख्यातुमिहोत्सहे
Supratika, O king, is there, with a broken and gaping mouth; as for his measure, I am unable to count it here.
