महामेरुर्महाकाशो जलदः कुमुदोत्तरः । जलधारो महाराज सुकुमार इति स्मृतः
Mahameru, Mahakasha, Jalada, Kumudottara, Jaladhara, O king, and Sukumara are remembered.
रेवतस्य तु कौमारः श्यामस्य मणिकाञ्चनः । केसरस्याथ मौदाकी परेण तु महापुमान्
Kaumara belongs to Revata, Manikanchana to Shyama, Maudaki to Kesara, and Mahapuman to the last.
परिवार्य तु कौरव्य दैर्घ्यं ह्रस्वत्वमेव च। जम्बूद्वीपेन संक्यातस्तस्य मध्ये महाद्रुमः
Encircling them, O descendant of Kuru, both in length and shortness, is Jambudvipa; in its midst stands a great tree.
शाको नाम महाराज प्रजा तस्य सदानुगा। तत्र पुण्या जनपदाः पूज्यते तत्र शंकरः
O king, it is called Shaka; its people always follow it. There are holy regions there, and Shiva is worshipped there.
तत्र गच्छन्ति सिद्धाश्च चारणा दैवतानि च। धार्मिकाश्च प्रजा राजंश्चत्वारोऽतीव भारत
There, siddhas, charanas, and divine beings go; and the people, O Bharata, are fourfold and very righteous.
वर्णाः स्वकर्मनिरता न च स्तेनोऽत्र दृश्यते । दीर्घायुषो महाराज जरामृत्युविवर्जिताः
The castes are devoted to their own duties; no thief is seen there. They are long-lived, O king, free from old age and death.
प्रजास्तत्र विवर्धन्ते वर्षास्विव समुद्रगाः। नद्यः पुण्यजलास्तत्र गङ्गा च बहुधा गता
The people flourish there, as rivers flow in the rainy season; there are holy rivers, and the Ganga flows in many forms.
सुकुमारी कुमारी च शीताशी वेणिका तथा। महानदी च कौरव्य तथा मणिजला नदी
Sukumari, Kumari, Shitashi, Venika, and also, O descendant of Kuru, the great river and the river with jewel-like waters.
चक्षुर्वर्धनिका चैव नदी भरतसत्तम । तत्र प्रवृत्ताः पुण्योदा नद्यः कुरुकुलोद्वह
Cakshurvardhanika, O best of Bharatas, is also a river there; holy rivers flow there, O uplifter of the Kuru lineage.
सहस्राणां शतान्येव यतो वर्षति वासवः । न तासां नामधेयानि परिमाणं तथैव च
Hundreds of thousands, where Indra rains; their names and measurements are not known.
शक्यन्ते परिसंख्यातुं पुण्यास्ता हि सरिद्वराः । तत्र पुण्या जनपदाश्चत्वारो लोकसंमताः
It is not possible to count them; those holy rivers are excellent. There are four holy regions there, accepted by the world.
मङ्गाश्च मशकाश्चैव मानसा मन्दगास्तथा । मङ्गा ब्राह्मणभूयिष्ठाः स्वकर्मनिरता नृप
Mangas, Mashakas, Manasas, and Mandagas; the Mangas are mostly Brahmins, devoted to their own duties, O king.
मशकेषु च राजन्या धार्मिकाः सर्वकामदाः । मानसाश्च महाराज वैश्यधर्मोपजीविनः
Among the Mashakas are Kshatriyas, righteous and fulfilling all desires; the Manasas, O king, live by the duties of Vaishyas.
सर्वकामसमायुक्ताः शूरा धर्मार्थनिश्चिताः । शूद्रास्तु मन्दगा नित्यं पुरुषा धर्मशीलिनः
Endowed with all desires, brave and established in righteousness and wealth; the Shudras are always Mandagas, men of righteous conduct.
न तत्र राजा राजेन्द्र न दण्डो न च दण्डिकाः। स्वधर्मेणैव धर्मज्ञास्ते रक्षन्ति परस्परम्
There is no king there, O king of kings, nor any punishment or punishers; those who know righteousness protect each other by their own duty alone.
एतावदेव शक्यं तु तत्र द्वीपे प्रभाषितुम्। एतदेव च श्रोतव्यं शाकद्वीपे महौजसि
Only this much can be spoken of that island, and only this should be heard, O mighty one, about the Shaka island.
उत्तरेषु च कौरव्य द्वीपेषु श्रूयते कथा। एवं तत्र महाराज ब्रुवतश्च निबोध मे
And in the northern islands, O descendant of Kuru, stories are heard; thus it is there, O great king, listen as I speak.
घृततोयः समुद्रोऽत्र दधिमण्डोदकोऽपरः । सुरोदः सागरश्चैव तथान्यो जलसागरः
There is a sea of clarified butter, another of curdled milk, a sea of wine, and also another, a sea of water.
परस्परेण द्विगुणाः सर्वे द्वीपा नराधिप । पर्वताश्च महाराज समुद्रैः परिवारिताः
All the islands, O lord of men, are each twice the size of the previous, and the mountains, O great king, are surrounded by oceans.
गौरस्तु मध्यमे द्वीपे गिरिर्मानःशिलो महान् । पर्वतः पश्चिमे कृष्णो नारायणसखो नृप
In the middle island stands the great mountain called Mānashila, made of gold; in the west is the dark mountain, Krishna, the friend of Narayana, O king.
तत्र रत्नानि दिव्यानि स्वयं रक्षति केशवः । प्रसन्नश्चाभवत्तत्र प्रजानां व्यदधत्सुखम्
There, the divine jewels are protected by Kesava himself; being pleased, he bestowed happiness upon the people there.
कुशस्तम्बः कुशद्वीपे मध्ये जनपदैः सह । संपूज्यते शाल्मलिश्च द्वीपे शाल्मलिके नृप
The sacred Kuśa-stalk is honored in Kuśa island, along with its peoples; likewise, the Śālmalī tree is revered in the Śālmalī island, O king.
क्रौञ्चद्वीपे महाक्रौञ्चो गिरी रत्नचयाकरः । संपूज्यते महाराज चातुर्वर्ण्येन नित्यदा
On Krauncha island, the great mountain Mahākrauncha, a repository of gems, is always worshipped by the four classes, O great king.
गोमन्तः पर्वतो राजन्सुमहान्सर्वधातुमान् । यत्र नित्यं निवसति श्रीमान्कमललोचनः
The mountain Gomanta, O king, is vast and rich in all minerals; there, the glorious lotus-eyed one always dwells.
मोक्षिभिः संस्तुतो नित्यं प्रभुर्नारायणो हरिः । कुशद्वीपे तु राजेन्द्र पर्वतो विद्रुमैश्चितः
Narayana Hari, the lord, is always praised there by those seeking liberation; and in Kuśa island, O king of kings, there is a mountain adorned with coral.
सुनामा नाम दुर्धर्षो द्वितीयो हेमपर्वतः । द्युतिमान्नाम कौरव्य तृतीयः कुमुदो गिरिः
The first is the renowned and formidable mountain Sunāma; the second is the golden mountain; the third, O Kaurava, is the radiant mountain Kumuda.
चतुर्थः पुष्पवान्नाम पञ्चमस्तु कुशेशयः । षष्ठो हरिगिरिर्नाम षडेते पर्वतोत्तमाः
The fourth is called Pushpavat, the fifth is Kuśeshaya, and the sixth is the mountain named Harigiri—these six are the foremost mountains.
तेषामन्तरविष्कम्भो द्विगुणः सर्वभागशः । औद्भिदं प्रथमं वर्षं द्वितीयं वेणुमण्डलम्
The distance between each of them is twice as much as the previous, throughout; the first region is Audbhida, the second is Venumaṇḍala.
तृतीयं सुरथाकारं चतुर्थं कम्बलं स्मृतम् । धृतिमत्पञ्चमं वर्षं षष्ठं प्रभाकरम्
The third region is Surathākāra, the fourth is known as Kambala; the fifth is Dhṛtimat, and the sixth is Prabhākara.
सप्तमं कापिलं वर्षं सप्तैते वर्षलम्भकाः । एतेषु देवगन्धर्वाः प्रजाश्च जगतीश्वर
The seventh region is Kāpila—these are the seven divisions; in these dwell gods, gandharvas, and peoples, O lord of the earth.
