तस्य मूर्धाभिषेकस्तु भद्राश्वस्य विशांपते । भद्रसालवनं यत्र कालाम्रश्च महाद्रुमः
The coronation ground of Bhadrāśva, O lord of peoples, is there; where the forest of Bhadrāsāla stands, and the great tree Kālāmbra.
कालाम्रस्तु महाराज नित्यपुष्पफलः शुभः । द्रुमश्च योजनोत्सेधः सिद्धचारणसेवितः
The Kālāmbra, O great king, is auspicious, always bearing flowers and fruit; it is a tree of great height, frequented by siddhas and cāraṇas.
तत्र ते पुरुषाः श्वेतास्तेजोयुक्ता महाबलाः। स्त्रियः कुमुदवर्णाश्च सुन्दर्यः प्रियदर्शनाः
There, the men are white, endowed with energy and great strength; the women are lotus-colored, beautiful and pleasing to behold.
चन्द्रप्रभाश्चन्द्रवर्णाः पूर्वचन्द्रनिभाननाः । चन्द्रशीतलगात्र्यश्च नृत्तिगीतविशारदाः
They shine like the moon, their faces resembling the early moon; their bodies are cool as moonlight, skilled in dance and song.
दशवर्षसहस्राणि तत्रायुर्भरतर्षभ । कालाम्ररसपीतास्ते नित्यं संस्थितयौवनाः
There, O best of the Bharatas, the lifespan is ten thousand years; nourished by the juice of the kālāmra fruit, they always remain in the prime of youth.
दक्षिणेन तु नीलस्य निषधस्योत्तरेण तु। सुदर्शनो नाम महाञ्जम्बूवृक्षः सनातनः
To the south of Nīla and to the north of Niṣadha stands the great and eternal Jambū tree, called Sudarśana.
सर्वकामफलः पुण्यः सिद्धचारणसेवितः। तस्य नाम्ना समाख्यातो जम्बूद्वीपः सनातनः
It bears all desired fruits, is sacred, and attended by Siddhas and Cāraṇas; after its name, this ancient land is called Jambūdvīpa.
योजनानां सहस्त्रं च शतं च भरतर्षभ । उत्सेधो वृक्षराजस्य दिवस्पृङ्भनुजेश्वर
O best of the Bharatas, the height of that king of trees, O lord of the day’s offspring, is one thousand and one hundred yojanas.
अरत्नीनां सहस्रं च शतानि दश पञ्च च । परिणाहस्तु वृक्षस्य फलानां रसभेदिनाम्
Its girth, measured by cubits, is fifteen thousand; the fruits, filled with diverse juices, encircle the tree.
पतमानानि तान्युर्वी कुर्वन्ति विपुलं स्वनम् । मुञ्चन्ति च रसं राजंस्तस्मिन्रजतसन्निभम्
As they fall, those fruits make a great sound upon the earth, and from them, O king, a silver-like juice flows forth.
तस्या जम्बाः फलरसो नदी भूत्वा जनाधिप । मेरुं प्रदक्षिणं कृत्वा संप्रयात्युत्तरान्कुरून्
The juice of those Jambū fruits becomes a river, O lord of men, which, after circling Mount Meru, flows to the northern Kurus.
तत्र तेषां मनःशान्तिर्न पिपासा जनाधिप । तस्मिन्फलरसे पीते न जरा बाधते च तान्
There, O lord of men, their minds are at peace, they feel no thirst, and, having drunk that fruit juice, they are not afflicted by old age.
तत्र जाम्बूनदं नाम कनकं देवभूषणम् । इन्द्रगोपकसंकाशं जायते भास्वरं तु तत्
There arises a gold called Jāmbūnada, an ornament of the gods, shining like the insect Indragopa.
तरुणादित्यवर्णाश्च जायन्ते तत्र मानवाः । तथा माल्यवतः श्रृङ्गे दृश्यते हव्यवाट् सदा
There, men are born with the color of the rising sun; and on the summit of Mount Mālyavat, the sacrificial fire is always seen.
नाम्ना संवर्तको नाम कालाग्निर्भरतर्षभ । तथा माल्यवतः श्रृङ्गे पूर्वपूर्वानुगण्डिका
There, O best of the Bharatas, is the fire called Saṃvartaka, the fire of destruction; and likewise, on the summit of Mālyavat, are the earlier and earlier ridges.
योजनानां सहस्राणि पञ्चषण्माल्यवानथ । महारजतसंकाशा जायन्ते तत्र मानवाः
Then Mālyavat extends for six thousand yojanas; there, men are born with the brilliance of great silver.
ब्रह्मलोकच्युताः सर्वे सर्वे सर्वेषु साधवः । तपस्तप्यन्ति ते तीव्रं भवन्ति ह्यूर्ध्वरेतसः । रक्षणार्थं तु भूतानां प्रविश्यन्ते दिवाकरम्
All those who have fallen from the world of Brahmā, all virtuous in every way, practice intense austerity there, remaining celibate; for the protection of beings, they enter the sun.
षष्टिस्तानि सहस्राणि षष्टिरेव शतानि च। अरुणस्याग्रतो यान्ति परिवार्य दिवाकरम्
Sixty thousand and sixty hundred of them, preceding Aruṇa, surround the sun as it moves.
षष्टिं वर्षसहस्राणि षष्टिमेव शतानि च। आदित्यतापतप्तास्ते विशन्ति शशिमण्डलम्
For sixty thousand and sixty hundred years, scorched by the heat of the sun, they enter the orb of the moon.
वर्षाणां चैव नामानि पर्वतानां च संजय। आचक्ष्व मे यथातत्त्वं ये च पर्वतवासिनः
Tell me, O Saṃjaya, the true names of the regions and mountains, and also of those who dwell upon the mountains.
दक्षिणेन तु श्वेतस्य नीलस्यैवोत्तरेण तु। वर्षं रमणकं नाम जायन्ते तत्र मानवाः
To the south of Śveta and to the north of Nīla is the region called Ramaṇaka, where men are born.
शुक्लाभिजनसंपन्नाः सर्वे सुप्रियदर्शनाः। निःसपत्नाश्च ते सर्वे जायन्ते तत्र मानवाः
All those men are endowed with noble lineage, fair in appearance, and without rivals are they born there.
दशवर्षसहस्राणि शतानि दश पञ्च च। जीवन्ति ते महाराज नित्यं मुदितमानसाः
O great king, they live for ten thousand and fifteen hundred years, always with joyful minds.
दक्षिणे शृङ्गिणश्चैव श्वेतस्याथोत्तरेण तु। वर्षं हिरण्मयं नाम यत्र हैरण्वती नदी
To the south of Śṛṅgī and to the north of Śveta lies the land called Hiraṇmaya, where the river Hairaṇvatī flows.
यत्र चायं महाराज पक्षिराट् पतगोत्तमः। यक्षानुगा महाराज धनिनः प्रियदर्शनाः
There, O great king, is this king of birds, the best among winged creatures; and the Yakṣas, wealthy and pleasing to behold, dwell there, O king.
महाबलास्तत्र जना राजन्मुदितमानसाः। एकादशसहस्राणि वर्षाणां ते जनाधिप
There, mighty are the people, O king, with joyful hearts; they live for eleven thousand years, O lord of men.
आयुःप्रमाणं जीवन्ति शतानि दश पञ्च च। श्रृङ्गाणि वै श्रृङ्गवतस्त्रीण्येव मनुजाधिप
Their lifespan is ten thousand and fifteen hundred years; Śṛṅgavat has three peaks, O lord of men.
एकं मणिमयं तत्र तथैकं रौक्ममद्भुतम् । सर्वरत्नमयं चैकं भवनैरुपशोभितम् । तत्र स्वयंप्रभा देवी नित्यं वसति शाण्डिली
There is one palace made of jewels, one of wondrous gold, and one of all kinds of gems, adorned with mansions; there, the self-luminous goddess Śāṇḍilī always resides.
उत्तरेण तु श्रृङ्गस्य समुद्रान्ते जनाधिप । वर्षमैरावतं नाम तस्माच्छृङ्गवतः परम्
To the north of Śṛṅga, at the edge of the sea, O lord of men, lies the land called Airāvata, beyond Śṛṅgavat.
न तत्र सूर्यस्तपति न जीर्यन्ते च मानवाः । चन्द्रमाश्च सनक्षत्रो ज्योतिर्भूत इवावृतः
There, the sun does not shine, nor do people grow old; the moon, with its constellation, appears as if enveloped in light.
