इह युद्धे महाराज भविष्यति महान्क्षयः । तथेह च निमित्तानि भयदान्युपलक्षये
In this war, O great king, there will be immense destruction; and here I observe many omens that bring fear.
श्येना गृध्राश्च काकाश्च काङ्काश्च सहिता बकैः । संपतन्ति ध्वजाग्रेषु समवायांश्च कुर्वते
Vultures, kites, crows, and cranes together with herons are swooping down upon the banners and gathering there.
अभ्यग्रं च प्रपश्यन्ति युद्धमानन्दिनो द्विजाः । क्रव्यादा भक्षयिष्यन्ति मांसानि गजवाजिनां
The twice-born, delighted, eagerly watch the battle; flesh-eating creatures will devour the flesh of elephants and horses.
कटाकटेति वाशन्तो भैरवा भयवेदिनः । कङ्काः क्रोशन्ति मध्याह्ने दक्षिणामभितो दिशं
The dreadful, fearsome cries of jackals echo 'kaṭākaṭa'; herons wail at midday toward the southern direction.
उभे पूर्वापरे सन्ध्ये नित्यं पश्यामि भारत । उदयास्तमने सूर्यं कबन्धैः परिवारितम्
O Bhārata, at both dawn and dusk I always see the sun at its rising and setting surrounded by headless bodies.
श्वेतलोहितपर्यन्ताः कृष्णाग्रीवाः सविद्युतः । त्रिवर्णाः परिघाः सन्धौ भानुमावारयन्त्युत
White and red at the edges, with black necks and streaks of lightning, three-colored halos at the horizon obscure the sun.
ज्वलितार्के .......त्रं निर्विशेषदिनक्षपम् । चन्द्रोऽभूतग्निवर्णश्च पद्मवर्णे नभस्तले
When the blazing sun... the distinction between day and night vanishes; the moon appears fiery in color, like a lotus in the sky.
आलक्षे प्रभया हीनां पौर्णमासीं च कीर्तिकीम् । चन्द्रोऽभूदग्निवर्णश्च पद्मवर्णे नभस्तले
I observe the full moon, famed for its radiance, deprived of its light; the moon appears fiery in color, like a lotus in the sky.
स्वप्स्यन्ति निहता वीरा भूमिमावृत्य पार्थिवाः । राजानो राजपुत्राश्च शूराः परिघबाहवः
The slain heroes, kings, princes, and mighty warriors with arms like iron bars will sleep, covering the earth.
अन्तरिक्षे वराहस्य पृषदंशकस्य चोभयोः। प्रणादं युध्यतो रात्रौ रौद्रं नित्यं प्रलक्षये
In the sky, I constantly observe at night the dreadful roar of both the boar and the jackal as they fight.
देवताप्रतिमाश्चैव कम्पन्ति च हसन्ति च। वमन्ति रुधिरं चास्यैः स्विद्यन्ति प्रपतन्ति च
Images of the gods tremble, laugh, vomit blood from their mouths, sweat, and fall down.
अनाहता दुन्दुभयः प्रणदन्ति विशांपते । अयुक्ताश्च प्रवर्तन्ते क्षत्रियाणां महारथाः
Unstruck drums roar, O lord of the people; chariots of the Kshatriya warriors move without being yoked.
कोकिलाः शतपत्राश्च चाषा भासाः शुकास्तथा । सारसाश्च मयूराश्च वाचो मुञ्चन्ति दारुणाः
Cuckoos, lotuses, cāṣa birds, herons, parrots, cranes, and peacocks utter harsh cries.
गृहीतशस्त्राः क्रोशन्ति चर्मिणो वाजिपृष्ठगाः । अरुणोदये प्रदृश्यन्ते शतशः शलभव्रजाः
Warriors clad in armor, weapons in hand, cry out from horseback; at dawn, swarms of locusts are seen by the hundreds.
उभे सन्ध्ये प्रकाशन्ते दिशो दाहसमन्विते। पर्जन्यः पांसुवर्षी च मांसवर्षी च भारत
At both twilights, the directions blaze with fire; O Bhārata, clouds rain dust and flesh.
या चैषा विश्रुता राजंस्त्रैलोक्ये साधुसंमता। अरुन्धती तयाप्येष वसिष्ठः पृष्ठतः कृतः
And that Arundhatī, renowned and honored throughout the three worlds, now finds Vasiṣṭha placed behind her.
रोहिणीं पीडयन्नेष स्थितो राजञ्शनैश्चरः । व्यावृत्तं लक्ष्म सोमस्य भविष्यति महद्भयम्
Saturn stands oppressing Rohiṇī, O King; the mark of the moon has shifted—great fear will arise.
अनभ्रे च महाघोरस्तनितं श्रूयते भृशम् । वाहनानां च रुदतां निपतन्त्युश्रुबिन्दवः
A terrible thunder is heard in a cloudless sky; from the eyes of animals, tears fall as they weep.
एवमुक्त्वा ययौ व्यासो धृतराष्ट्रय धीमते। धृतराष्ट्रोऽपि तच्छ्रुत्वा ध्यानमेवान्वपद्यत
Having spoken thus, Vyāsa departed, O wise Dhṛtarāṣṭra; and Dhṛtarāṣṭra, hearing this, entered into meditation.
स मुहूर्तमिव ध्यात्वा विनिःश्वस्य मुहुर्मुहुः । संजयं संशितात्मानमपृच्छद्रतर्षभ
After meditating for a moment, sighing repeatedly, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, steadfast in mind, questioned Saṃjaya, the bull among men.
संजयेमे महीपालाः शूरा युद्धाभिनन्दिनः । अन्योन्यमभिनिघ्नन्ति शस्त्रैरुच्चावचैरिह
O Sanjaya, these kings, valiant and eager for battle, strike each other here with weapons of various kinds.
पार्थिवाः पृथिवीहेतोः समभित्यज्य जीवितम् । न वा शाम्यन्ति निघ्नन्तो वर्धयन्ति यमक्षयम्
The rulers of the earth, for the sake of land, abandon their lives completely; even as they slay each other, they do not cease, but only increase the realm of Yama.
भौममैश्वर्यमिच्छन्तो न मृष्यन्ते परस्परम् । मन्ये बहुगुणा भूमिस्तन्ममाचक्ष्व संजय
Desiring earthly sovereignty, they cannot tolerate one another; I think the earth must possess many virtues—tell me of this, Sanjaya.
बहूनि च सहस्राणि प्रयुतान्यर्बुदानि च। कोट्यश्च लोकवीराणां समेताः कुरुजाङ्गले
Many thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, and millions of heroic men have assembled on the field of the Kurus.
देशानां च परीमाणं नगराणां च संजय । श्रोतुमिच्छामि तत्त्वेन यत एते समागताः
I wish to hear, Sanjaya, the true extent of the lands and cities from which these have gathered.
दिव्यबुद्धिप्रदीपेन युक्तस्त्वं ज्ञानचक्षुषा। प्रभावात्तस्य विप्रर्षेर्व्यासस्यामिततेजसः
Endowed with the divine lamp of intellect and the eye of knowledge, you possess the power of that sage Vyasa of immeasurable brilliance.
यथाप्रज्ञं महाप्राज्ञ भौमान्वक्ष्यामि ते गुणान्। शास्त्रचक्षुरवेक्षस्व नमस्ते भरतर्षभ
O greatly wise one, according to my understanding I will tell you the virtues of the earth; observe with the eye of scripture—salutations to you, best of the Bharatas.
द्विविधानीह भूतानि चराणि स्थावराणि च। त्रसानां त्रिविधा योनिरण्डस्वेदजरायुजाः
Here, beings are of two kinds: moving and unmoving; among the moving, there are three kinds of birth—egg-born, sweat-born, and womb-born.
त्रसानां खलु सर्वेषां श्रेष्ठा राजञ्जरायुजाः। जरायुजानां प्रवरा मानवाः पशवश्च ये
Among all moving beings, O king, those born from the womb are the highest; and among the womb-born, humans and certain animals are the foremost.
नानारूपधरा राजंस्तेषां भेदाश्चतुर्दश । वेदोक्ताः पृथिवीपाल येषु यज्ञाः प्रतिष्ठिताः
O king, they take on various forms, and among them are fourteen divisions, as declared in the Vedas, in which sacrifices are established.
