शलो भूरिश्रवाः शल्यः कौसल्योऽथ बृहद्रथः । एते पश्चादनुगता धार्तराष्ट्रपुरोगमाः
Shala, Bhurishrava, Shalya, the Kosala king, and Brihadratha—these followed behind, led by the Dhartarashtras.
ते समेत्य यथान्यायं धार्तराष्ट्रा महाबलाः। कुरुक्षेत्रस्य पश्चार्धे व्यवातिष्ठन्त दंशिताः
These mighty Dhartarashtras, having assembled properly, took their stand, armed and ready, in the western half of Kurukshetra.
दुर्योधनस्तु शिबिरं कारयामास भारत । यथैव हास्तिनपुरं द्वितीयं समलंकृतम्
Duryodhana then ordered the construction of a camp, O Bharata, adorned like a second Hastinapura.
न विशेषं विजानन्ति पुरस्य शिबिरस्य वा । कुशला अपि राजेन्द्र नरा नगरवासिनः
Even the skilled townsmen, O king, could not distinguish between the city and the camp.
तादृशान्येव दुर्गाणि राज्ञामपि महीपतिः । कारयामास कौरव्यः शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः
The Kaurava king had such fortifications built for the kings—by the hundreds and thousands.
पञ्चयोजनमुत्सृज्य माण्डलं तद्रणाजिरम् । सेनानिवेशास्ते राजन्नाविशञ्छतसङ्घशः
Leaving a space of five yojanas, the armies entered their encampments in groups of hundreds, encircling the battlefield.
तत्र ते पृथिवीपाला यथोत्साहं यथाबलम् । विविशुः शिबिराण्यत्र द्रव्यवन्ति सहस्रशः
There, the rulers of the earth entered the thousands of well-supplied camps according to their enthusiasm and strength.
तेषां दुर्योधनो राजा ससैन्यानां महात्मनाम् । व्यादिदेश स बाह्यानां भक्ष्यभोज्यमनुत्तमम्
For them, King Duryodhana, along with the great-souled warriors, arranged the finest food and provisions for those outside the camp.
सनागाश्वमनुण्याणां ये च शिल्पोपजीविनः । ये चान्येऽनुगतास्तत्र सूतमागधबन्दिनः
Those who live by their skills, with elephants, horses, and vehicles, and others who had come there—the charioteers, bards, and singers—
वणिजो गणिकाश्चारा ये चैव प्रेक्षका जनाः । सर्वांस्तन्कौरवो राजा विधिवत्प्रत्यवैक्षत
Merchants, courtesans, spies, and those who came as spectators—the Kaurava king duly observed all of them.
तथैव राजा कौन्तेयो धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। धृष्टद्युम्नमुखान्वीरांश्चोदयामास भारत
In the same way, King Yudhishthira, son of Kunti and upholder of righteousness, urged the heroes led by Dhrishtadyumna, O Bharata.
चेदिकाशिकरूशानां नेतारं दृढविक्रमम् । सेनापतिममित्रघ्नं धृष्टकेतुमथादिशत्
He appointed Dhrishtaketu, the steadfast and powerful leader of the Cedis, Kashis, and Karushas, as commander and destroyer of foes.
विराटं द्रुपदं चैव युयुधानं शिखण्डिनम् । पाञ्चाल्यौ च महेष्वासौ युधामन्यूत्तमौजसौ
Virata, Drupada, Yuyudhana, Shikhandin, and the two mighty archers from Panchala, Yudhamanyu and Uttamaujas—
ते शूराश्चित्रवर्माणस्तप्तकुण्डलधारिणः। आज्यावसिक्ता ज्वलिता धिष्ण्येष्विव हुताशनाः
Those brave warriors, adorned in splendid armor and wearing heated earrings, shone, anointed with clarified butter, blazing like sacrificial fires on their altars.
अशोभन्त महेष्वासा ग्रहाः प्रज्वलिता इव । अथ सैन्यं यथायोगं पूजयित्वा नरर्षभः
Those great archers shone like blazing planets; then, having honored the army as appropriate, the best of men—
दिदेश तान्यनीकानि प्रयाणाय महीपतिः। तेषां युधिष्ठिरो राजा ससैन्यानां महात्मनाम्
The king directed those divisions to march forth; Yudhishthira, king of great souls, with his armies—
व्यादिदेश सबाह्यानां भक्ष्यभोज्यमनुत्तमम् । स गजाश्वमनुष्याणां ये च शिल्पोपजीविनः
He assigned the best food and provisions for all, including those outside the ranks, for elephants, horses, men, and those who lived by their crafts.
अभिमन्युं बृहन्तं च द्रौपदेयांश्च सर्वशः । धृष्टद्युम्नमुखानेतान्प्राहिणोत्पाण्डुनन्दनः
Abhimanyu, Brihanta, and all the sons of Draupadi—these, led by Dhrishtadyumna, the son of Pandu sent forth.
भीमं च युयुधानं च पाण्डवं च धनंजयम्। द्वितीयं प्रेषयामास बलस्कन्धं युधिष्टिरः
Bhima, Yuyudhana, and Arjuna the Pandava—Yudhishthira dispatched this second division of the army.
भाण्डं समारोपयतां चरतां संप्रधावताम् । हृष्टानां तत्र योधानां शब्दो दिवमिवास्पशत्
As they loaded the equipment and moved about, rushing here and there, the joyous warriors raised a sound that seemed to reach the heavens.
स्वयमेव ततः पश्चाद्विराटद्रपदान्वितः। अथापरैर्महीपालैः सह प्रायान्महीपतिः
Then, afterwards, the king himself set out, accompanied by Virata and Drupada, and with other kings as well.
भीमधन्वायती सेना धृष्टद्युम्नेन पालिता। गङ्गेव पूर्णा स्तिमिता स्यन्दमाना व्यदृश्यत
The army, with Bhima as its bowman and guarded by Dhrishtadyumna, appeared like the full and steady-flowing Ganges.
ततः पुनरनीकानि न्ययोजयत बुद्धिमान्। मोहयन्धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्राणां बुद्धिनिश्चयम्
Then, the wise king arranged the divisions again, confounding the resolve of Dhritarashtra's sons.
द्रौपदेयान्महेष्वासानभिमन्युं च पाण्डवः । नकुलं सहदेवं च सर्वांश्चैव प्रभद्रकान्
The Pandava assigned the great archers, the sons of Draupadi, Abhimanyu, Nakula, Sahadeva, and all the Prabhadrakas.
दश चाश्वसहस्राणि द्विसहस्त्राणि दन्तिनाम् । अयुतं च पदातीनां रथाः पञ्चशतं तथा
Ten thousand horses, two thousand elephants, ten thousand foot soldiers, and five hundred chariots—
भीमसेनस्य दुर्धर्षं प्रथमं प्रादिशद्बलम् । मध्यमे च विराटं च जयत्सेनं च पाण्डवः
He assigned the formidable first division to Bhimasena; in the center, the Pandava placed Virata and Jayatsena.
महारथौ च पाञ्चाल्यौ युधामन्यूत्तमौजसौ । वीर्यवन्तौ महात्मानौ युधामन्यूत्तमौजसौ
The two great chariot-warriors of the Panchalas, Yudhāmanyu and Uttamaujas, both mighty and high-souled, Yudhāmanyu and Uttamaujas, endowed with strength.
अन्वयातां तदा मध्ये वासुदेवधनञ्जयौ । `तौ दृष्ट्वा पृथिवीपाला नष्टमित्येव मेनिरे। अन्तरिक्षगताः सर्वे देवाः सेन्द्रपुरोगमाः
Then, in the midst, Vasudeva and Dhananjaya advanced; seeing them, the kings of the earth thought all was lost; all the gods, with Indra at their head, who had gathered in the sky, also thought so.
बभूवुरतिसंरब्धाः कृतप्रहरणा नराः। तेषां विंशतिसाहस्रा हयाः शूरैरधिष्ठिताः । पञ्च नागसहस्राणि रथवंशाश्च सर्वशः
The warriors became exceedingly agitated, having readied their weapons; among them were twenty thousand horses, mounted by heroes, and five thousand elephants, along with all the lines of chariots.
पदातयश्च ये शूराः कार्मुकासिगदाधराः । सहस्रशोऽन्वयुः पश्चादग्रतश्च सहस्रशः
And the brave foot-soldiers, bearing bows, swords, and maces, followed by the thousands both behind and in front.
