Thus, when I had fallen, Rāma, filled with joy, let out a great shout along with his followers.
At that moment, O king, the Kurus, who stood at my side and had come to witness the battle, were overcome with deepest grief when I fell.
Then, as I lay fallen, O lion among kings, I saw eight twice-born men, radiant like the sun and fire, who surrounded me on all sides, holding me in the midst of battle with their own arms.
Protected by those brāhmaṇas, I did not touch the ground; truly, I was held aloft by them in the sky, as if by kinsmen.
Breathing in the air, sprinkled with drops of water, I was then addressed by those brāhmaṇas, O king, as they embraced me.
"Do not fear," they all said together, and repeatedly, "May you be well!" Thus, gratified by their words, I suddenly rose up and saw the best of rivers, my mother, standing on a chariot.
My horses were gathered by her, the great river, on the battlefield, O king of the Kurus; taking hold of my mother's feet, I then ascended the chariot of my ancestors.
She protected me, my chariot, my horses, and all my equipment; with joined palms I respectfully dismissed her once again.
Then, swiftly harnessing my horses myself, I fought with Jāmadagnya after the day had ended, O Bhārata.
Then, O best of the Bharatas, I released in battle a swift and mighty arrow at Rāma, one that would pierce his heart.
Then, struck by my arrows, Rama fell to the earth, abandoning his bow and sinking to his knees, overcome by bewilderment.
As Rama fell, countless clouds covered the sky, pouring forth abundant blood.
Hundreds of meteors, accompanied by thunder and trembling, fell; and suddenly, Svarbhanu obscured the blazing sun.
Harsh winds blew, the earth shook, and vultures, jackals, and crows, gathered in flocks, descended all around.
In the blazing direction, a jackal howled fiercely again and again; drums sounded unstruck, echoing with intense noise.
All these terrifying omens arose, dreadful and frightening, when the great Rama lay senseless upon the earth.
Then, Rama suddenly rose and approached me, O Kaurava, once more for battle, agitated and inflamed with anger.
The mighty-armed Rama took up his bow, resembling a palm tree; but as he did so, I restrained him.
The great sages, filled with compassion, though Bhargava was seized by wrath, gathered around, and the unconquerable Rama prepared an arrow like the fire of time.
The sun, with its faint rays, set, veiled by clouds of dust; night descended, cooled by gentle breezes; thus, we postponed the battle.
So, O King, the postponement occurred; then, when the night was clear, the dreadful battle resumed. Day after day, for twenty days, and then three more, it continued in the same way.
Then, at night, O King, I bowed my head in reverence to all the Brahmanas, ancestors, and deities.
Having reached my bed in solitude, O lord of the people, I reflected in my mind upon the night-dwelling beings, spirits, kings, and men.
This battle with Jamadagni's son is exceedingly fierce, and many days have passed in great calamity.
I am unable to defeat the mighty Rama, the powerful Brahmana, Jamadagni's son, in the midst of battle.
If I am able to conquer the valiant Jamadagni's son, let the gods show me a sign in the night, favoring me.
Then, O King, wounded by arrows, I slept at night, lying on my right side until the morning.
Then, those foremost Brahmanas lifted me up after I had fallen from my chariot, supported me, and comforted me, saying, 'Do not fear.'
O great king, those very beings appeared to me in a dream, surrounding me, and spoke these words—listen to them, O best of the Kurus.
Rise up, O son of Ganga, do not be afraid; there is no danger for you. We will protect you, O Kaurava, for you are our very own body.
