From the force of their impact, fire arose, and those arrows, ignited by their own friction, blazed with wondrous light.
Then, O king, all those arrows fell to the earth, reduced to ashes—hundreds of thousands, tens of millions, and crores.
Then, O Kaurava, Rama, enraged, swiftly rained down tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, and countless arrows upon me.
Then, O king, I too cut down those arrows in battle with serpent-like shafts, making them fall to the earth as if felling trees.
Thus that battle took place at that time, O best of the Bharatas; when evening had passed, my teacher departed.
When Rama returned, O best of the Bharatas, another fierce and terrible battle occurred the next day.
Then that righteous and mighty one, skilled in divine weapons, unleashed many celestial missiles day after day.
In that tumultuous battle, O Bharata, I countered those weapons with my own, abandoning even my life, so hard to give up.
Though many weapons were destroyed by weapons in various ways, O Bharata, that great-souled one, having resolved to give up his life, did not grow angry in the fight.
Then Jamadagni’s mighty son sent forth a terrible spear, when his weapon was checked, a blazing missile as if released by Time, its tip aflame, filling the worlds with its radiance.
Then, as that blazing spear approached, shining like the sun at the end of time, I cut it into three pieces with arrows and brought it down to the earth; then a fragrant wind began to blow.
When that spear was cut down, Rama, inflamed with anger, sent forth twelve more dreadful spears; O Bharata, their forms, due to their brilliance and speed, cannot be described.
But I, bewildered on seeing them, beheld all those spears coming from every direction, blazing with fierce energy, like the twelve suns at the destruction of the worlds.
Then, O King, seeing a net of arrows deployed, I broke it with my own arrow-net in battle, and I sent twelve arrows against those spears, and struck down those terrible missiles.
Then, O King, the great-souled Jamadagni’s son hurled dreadful spears with golden shafts, adorned with gold bands, blazing like great meteors.
Those fierce spears I blocked with my shield, O king, and struck them down in battle with my sword; then, with divine arrows, I showered Jamadagni’s son’s divine horses and charioteer in the fight.
Seeing those golden-adorned spears, shaped like serpents, cut down, the great-souled lord of the Haihayas, seized by wrath, unleashed a divine weapon.
Then, O King, blazing flights of arrows, fierce as swarms of locusts, fell upon me, covering my body, my horses, my charioteer, and my chariot.
My chariot was entirely covered with arrows, O King, as were my steeds and charioteer; the yoke and wheels of my chariot were likewise broken by arrows.
Then, when that shower of arrows had passed, I returned the attack upon my teacher with a torrent of arrows; wounded by my shafts, he, like a mass of Brahman, shed much blood from his body.
Just as Rama was scorched by my showers of arrows, so too was I deeply pierced; then the battle ceased in the afternoon, as the sun approached the mountain.
Then, O king, at dawn, when the sun had risen clear, another battle began between me and Bhargava.
Then, standing unwavering on his chariot, Rāma, best of warriors, showered volleys of arrows upon me, like rain pouring down on a mountain.
Then my charioteer, struck by that torrent of arrows, fled from the chariot, his mind filled with despair, causing my own heart to sink.
My charioteer was then overtaken by great distress and, struck by arrows, collapsed to the ground and lost consciousness.
Then, oppressed by Rāma's arrows, my charioteer gave up his life in but a moment, O king, and at that time, fear seized me as well.
With my charioteer slain, as I was carelessly hurling arrows, Rāma, perceiving my distraction, sent forth a missile equal to death.
Then that descendant of Bhṛgu, seeing me distressed by the loss of my charioteer and bewildered, drew his mighty bow and struck me deeply with an arrow.
That blood-drinking arrow, O king, struck me between the arms and, together with me, fell to the earth.
Thinking I was slain, Rāma, O bull among the Bharatas, roared aloud like a cloud and rejoiced again and again.
