Then, O King, the illustrious Brahmin Rama, enraged, struck me from the left upon my chest.
Then, O best of the Bharatas, I sank down upon my excellent chariot, and my charioteer quickly carried me away, overwhelmed by faintness.
Afflicted by Rama’s arrows, I was faint and grievously wounded, and so, unconscious and badly hurt, I was carried away.
All of Rama’s followers, delighted, shouted aloud when they saw me, along with the maidens of Kashi and others who had not yet been wounded.
Then, regaining consciousness, I spoke to my charioteer, knowing my senses had returned: 'Drive, charioteer, to where Rama is; I am ready and free from pain.'
Then my charioteer drove me forth with splendid horses, moving like the wind, their gait as if they were dancing, O Kauravya.
Then, O Kaurava, having approached Rama, I showered him with a rain of arrows, fiercely agitated and eager for victory.
As those arrows rushed toward him, Rama swiftly cut each one down in battle with three straight-flying arrows of his own.
Then all my well-sharpened arrows were destroyed, O Bharata, split in two by Rama’s arrows, by the hundreds and thousands.
Then again, I released a blazing, radiant arrow, equal to Death, at Jamadagnya Rama, intent on slaying him.
Struck deeply by that arrow, overcome by its force, Rama became bewildered in battle and fell to the ground.
Then, as Rama lay upon the earth, a great cry of distress arose everywhere, O Bharata, and the world was shaken, as if the sun had fallen.
Then, O joy of the Kurus, all the ascetics and the Kashyapas, greatly agitated, rushed toward him at once.
Then, embracing him gently, they comforted him with cool water from their hands and with blessings for victory, O Kaurava.
Then Rama, rising up, bewildered, spoke these words: 'Stand, Bhishma, you are slain!' and fitted an arrow to his bow.
That arrow, released, fell swiftly to my left side in the great battle, by which I was greatly shaken, like a tree struck by the wind.
Then Rama, having slain my horses with a swift weapon in that great battle, confidently covered me with arrows that made my hair stand on end.
Then I too, mighty-armed, released a swift weapon for countering in battle, launching arrows empowered by mantras.
Then, the sky all around was covered by the arrows of Rama and myself, so that the sun’s rays could not penetrate the mass of arrows.
Thereupon, O king, the wind became like one obstructed by clouds, and from the agitation of the air and the sun’s rays—
From the force of their impact, fire arose, and those arrows, ignited by their own friction, blazed with wondrous light.
Then, O king, all those arrows fell to the earth, reduced to ashes—hundreds of thousands, tens of millions, and crores.
Then, O Kaurava, Rama, enraged, swiftly rained down tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, and countless arrows upon me.
Then, O king, I too cut down those arrows in battle with serpent-like shafts, making them fall to the earth as if felling trees.
Thus that battle took place at that time, O best of the Bharatas; when evening had passed, my teacher departed.
When Rama returned, O best of the Bharatas, another fierce and terrible battle occurred the next day.
Then that righteous and mighty one, skilled in divine weapons, unleashed many celestial missiles day after day.
In that tumultuous battle, O Bharata, I countered those weapons with my own, abandoning even my life, so hard to give up.
Though many weapons were destroyed by weapons in various ways, O Bharata, that great-souled one, having resolved to give up his life, did not grow angry in the fight.
Then Jamadagni’s mighty son sent forth a terrible spear, when his weapon was checked, a blazing missile as if released by Time, its tip aflame, filling the worlds with its radiance.
