Those fierce arrows, many and piercing vital spots, struck me with great force, like serpents charged with poison and fire.
In battle, I steadied myself and, enraged, covered Rama with hundreds of arrows.
Rama, overwhelmed by those arrows blazing like fire and sun, sharp and resembling venomous snakes, became as if dull-minded.
Then, seized by compassion, I reproached myself, saying 'Fie, fie!' upon the battle and the warrior's duty, O Bharata.
Again and again, O King, overwhelmed by sorrow, I exclaimed, 'Alas! What a sin I have committed, and this warrior's duty, O Bharata.'
When the teacher, the twice-born, the righteous one, was thus afflicted by arrows, I did not strike Jamadagni's son further, O Bharata.
Then, as the sun set and the earth was enveloped in darkness, the thousand-rayed one departed, and the battle ceased.
Then the charioteer, skilled and approved by experts, removed the arrows from myself and from the horses, O lord of men.
With horses bathed and refreshed, their thirst quenched and spirits steady, when the sun had risen in the morning, then the battle commenced.
Seeing Bhishma swiftly approaching, standing armed upon his chariot, Rama, mighty in valor, made his own chariot ready for combat.
Then, seeing Rama advancing, eager for battle, I quickly set aside my excellent bow and suddenly descended from my chariot.
Having paid my respects in the same manner, I mounted my chariot, O Bharata, and stood fearlessly before Jamadagni’s son, ready to fight.
Then I showered him with a great volley of arrows, and he, too, covered me with a rain of arrows as I unleashed my own.
Enraged, Jamadagni’s son again sent forth fierce arrows at me, swift and blazing, as if charged with affection for their master.
Then, O King, I swiftly cut down hundreds and thousands of those sharp arrows in the sky again and again.
Then the mighty Jamadagni’s son employed divine weapons against me, but I repelled them all.
Wishing to accomplish something greater with weapons alone, O strong-armed one, then a great and terrible sound arose all around.
Then I employed the wind weapon against Jamadagni’s son, but Rama countered it, O Bharata, with a secret weapon.
Then, after due invocation, I released the fire weapon, but Rama, the mighty one, repelled it with the water weapon.
Thus I repelled the divine weapons of Rama, and Rama, the illustrious subduer of foes, repelled mine.
Then, O King, the illustrious Brahmin Rama, enraged, struck me from the left upon my chest.
Then, O best of the Bharatas, I sank down upon my excellent chariot, and my charioteer quickly carried me away, overwhelmed by faintness.
Afflicted by Rama’s arrows, I was faint and grievously wounded, and so, unconscious and badly hurt, I was carried away.
All of Rama’s followers, delighted, shouted aloud when they saw me, along with the maidens of Kashi and others who had not yet been wounded.
Then, regaining consciousness, I spoke to my charioteer, knowing my senses had returned: 'Drive, charioteer, to where Rama is; I am ready and free from pain.'
Then my charioteer drove me forth with splendid horses, moving like the wind, their gait as if they were dancing, O Kauravya.
Then, O Kaurava, having approached Rama, I showered him with a rain of arrows, fiercely agitated and eager for victory.
As those arrows rushed toward him, Rama swiftly cut each one down in battle with three straight-flying arrows of his own.
Then all my well-sharpened arrows were destroyed, O Bharata, split in two by Rama’s arrows, by the hundreds and thousands.
Then again, I released a blazing, radiant arrow, equal to Death, at Jamadagnya Rama, intent on slaying him.
