एतस्य तद्रथानीकं कथयन्ति रणप्रियाः । बहुत्वात्सागरप्रख्यं देवानामिव संयुगे
Those who delight in battle speak of his chariot division as vast as the ocean, like the gods’ in combat.
क्षत्रधर्मा तु राजेन्द्र मतो मेऽर्धरथो नृप। धृष्टद्युम्नस्य तनयो बाल्यान्नातिकृतश्रमः
His son, O king, devoted to the warrior’s duty, is considered by me a half-charioteer; being young, he is not yet greatly fatigued.
शिशुपालसुतो वीरश्चेदिराजो महारथः। धृष्टकेतुर्महेष्वासः संबन्धी पाण्डवस्य ह
The heroic son of Śiśupāla, the king of Cedi, is a great charioteer; Dhṛṣṭaketu, mighty with the bow, is allied to the Pāṇḍavas.
एष चेदिपतिः शूरः सह पुत्रेण भारत । महारथानां सुकरं महत्कर्म करिष्यति
This brave lord of the Cedis, together with his son, O Bhārata, will accomplish great deeds among the mighty charioteers.
क्षत्रधर्मरतो मह्यं मतः परपुरंजयः । क्षत्रदेवस्तु राजेन्द्र पाण्डवेषु रथोत्तमः
Devoted to the warrior’s duty, he is esteemed by me as a conqueror of enemy cities; Kṣatradeva, O king, is a foremost charioteer among the Pāṇḍavas.
जयन्तश्चामितौजाश्च सत्यजिच्च महारथः । महारथा महात्मानः सर्वे पाञ्चालसत्तमाः
Jayanta, Amitaujas, and Satyajit are all great charioteers; all are noble-hearted, the best among the Pāñcālas.
योत्स्यन्ते समरे तात संरब्धा इव कुञ्जराः । अजो भोजश्च विक्रान्तौ पाण्डवार्थे महारथौ
They will fight in battle, father, aroused like elephants; Aja and Bhoja, both valiant, are great charioteers for the Pāṇḍavas’ cause.
योत्स्येते बलिनौ शूरौ परं शक्त्या यतिष्यतः। शीघ्रास्त्राश्चित्रयोद्धारः कृतिनो दृढविक्रमाः
These two, strong and heroic, will fight with utmost power; swift with weapons, skilled in varied combat, firm in their valor.
केकयाः पञ्च राजेन्द्र भ्रातरो दृढविक्रमाः । सर्वे चैव रथोदाराः सर्वे लोहितकध्वजाः
The five Kekaya brothers, O king, are steadfast in valor; all are distinguished charioteers, all bear red banners.
काशिकः सुकुमारश्च नीलो यश्चापरो नृप । सूर्यदत्तश्च शङ्खश्च मदिराश्वश्च नामतः
Kāśika, Sukumāra, Nīla, and another, O king, as well as Sūryadatta, Śaṅkha, and Madirāśva by name.
सर्व एव रथोदाराः सर्वे चाहवलक्षणाः । सर्वास्त्रविदुषः सर्वे महात्मानो मता मम
All are distinguished charioteers, all bear marks of valor; all are skilled in weapons, all are noble-hearted in my opinion.
वार्धक्षेमिर्महाराज मतो मम महारथः । चित्रायुघश्च नृपतिर्मतो मे रथसत्तमः
Vārdhakṣemi, O great king, is considered by me a great charioteer; Citrāyudha, the king, is esteemed by me as a foremost charioteer.
स हि सङ्ग्रामशोभी च भक्तश्चापि किरीटिनः । चेकितानः सत्यधृतिः पाण्डवानां महारथौ । द्वाविमौ पुरुषव्याघ्रौ रथोदारौ मतौ मम
He shines in battle and is devoted to the crowned one; Cekitāna and Satyadhṛti are great charioteers of the Pāṇḍavas; these two tiger-men are regarded by me as distinguished charioteers.
व्याघ्रदत्तश्च राजेन्द्र चन्द्रसेनश्च भारत। मतौ मम रथोदारौ पाण्डवानां न संशयः
Vyāghradatta and Candrasena, O king, are considered by me distinguished charioteers of the Pāṇḍavas, without doubt.
सेनाबिन्दुश्च राजेन्द्र क्रोधहन्ता च नामतः । यः समो वासुदेवेन भीमसेनेन वा विभो
Senābindu, O king, and Krodhahantā by name, who is equal to Vāsudeva or Bhīmasena, O illustrious one.
स योत्स्यति हि विक्रम्य समरे तव सैनिकैः । मां च द्रोणं कृपं चैव यथा संमन्यते भवान्
He will fight valiantly in battle against your warriors, as you regard me, Droṇa, and Kṛpa.
तथा स समरश्लाघी मन्तव्यो रथसत्तमः । काश्यः परमशीघ्रास्त्रः श्लाघनीयो नरोत्तमः
In the same way, that foremost of chariot-warriors, the illustrious Kāśya, who is highly skilled with swift weapons, should be regarded as praiseworthy in battle, O best of men.
रथ एकगुणो मह्यं ज्ञेयः परपुरंजयः । अयं च युधि विक्रान्तो मन्तव्योष्टगुणो रथः
A single-quality chariot-warrior, in my judgment, is one who conquers enemy cities; but this one, who is valiant in battle, should be considered an eightfold chariot-warrior.
सत्यजित्समरश्लाघी द्रुपदस्यात्मजो युवा । गतः सोऽतिरथत्वं हि धृष्टद्युम्नेन संमितः
Satyajit, renowned in battle, the young son of Drupada, has attained the status of an atiratha, being reckoned as such by Dhṛṣṭadyumna.
पाण्डवानां यशस्कामः परं कर्म करिष्यति । अनुरक्ताश्च शूरश्च रथोऽयमपरो महान्
Desiring the fame of the Pāṇḍavas, he will accomplish great deeds; devoted and courageous, this is another mighty chariot-warrior.
पाण्ड्यराजो महावीर्यः पाण्डवानां धुरंधरः । दृढधन्वा महेष्वासः पाण्डवानां महारथः
The king of the Pāṇḍyas, of great valor, is a mainstay of the Pāṇḍavas; firm in his bow, a mighty archer, he is a great chariot-warrior among the Pāṇḍavas.
श्रेणिमान्कौरवश्रेष्ठ वसुदानश्च पार्थिवः । उभावेतावतिरथौ मतौ परपुरंजयौ
Śreṇimān, best among the Kauravas, and King Vasudāna—both these conquerors of enemy cities are considered atirathas.
रोचमानो महाराज पाण्डवानां महारथः। योत्स्यतेऽमरवत्संख्ये परसैन्येषु भारत
Radiant in appearance, O great king, this great chariot-warrior of the Pāṇḍavas will fight in battle like a god among the opposing armies, O Bhārata.
पुरुजित्कृन्तिभोजश्च महेष्वासो महाबलः । मातुलो भीमसेनस्य स च मेऽतिरथो मतः
Purujit and Kṛntibhoja, mighty archers of great strength, the maternal uncles of Bhīmasena, are regarded by me as atirathas.
एष वीरो महेष्वासः कृती च निपुणश्च ह । चित्रयोधी च शक्तश्च मतो मे रथपुङ्गवः
This hero is a mighty archer, accomplished and skilled, a master of diverse weapons and capable; in my view, he is a foremost chariot-warrior.
स योत्स्यति हि विक्रम्य मघवानिव दानवैः । योधा ये चास्य विख्याताः सर्वे युद्धविशारदाः
He will indeed fight with valor, like Maghavan against the Dānavas; and all his renowned warriors are skilled in battle.
भागिनेयकृते वीरः स करिष्यति संगरे । सुमहत्कर्म पाण्डूनां स्थितः प्रियहिते रतः
For the sake of his nephew, this hero will perform a very great deed in battle for the Pāṇḍavas, being devoted to their welfare and interests.
भैमसेनिर्महाराज हैडिम्बो राक्षसेश्वरः । मतो मे बहुमायावी रथयूथपयूथपः
Bhīmasena's son, O great king, the lord of the Rākṣasas, Hidimba, is, in my judgment, a master of many illusions and a leader among chariot-warriors.
योत्स्यते समरे तात मायावी समरप्रियः । ये चास्य राक्षसा वीराः सचिवा वशवर्तिनः
He will fight in battle, O father, skilled in illusions and fond of combat; and all his Rākṣasa companions, heroic and obedient, will fight alongside him.
एते चान्ये च बहवो नानाजनपदेश्वराः । समेताः पाण्डवस्यार्थे वासुदेवपुरोगमाः
