स दर्पपूर्णो न समीक्षसे त्व- मनर्थमात्मन्यपि वर्तमानम्। तस्मादहं ते प्रथमं समूहे हन्ता समक्ष कुरुवृद्धमेव
Filled with pride, you do not see the harm that has come even to yourself; therefore, in the midst of all, I will first slay the elder of the Kurus before your eyes.
सूर्योदये युक्तसेनः प्रतीक्ष्य ध्वजी रथी रक्षत सत्यसन्धम्। अहं हि वः पश्यतां द्विपमेनं भीष्मं रथात्पातयिष्यामि बाणैः
At sunrise, with your army arrayed, banners raised, and chariots ready, guard your champion well; for before your very eyes, I will strike down Bhishma, elephant among men, from his chariot with my arrows.
श्वोभूते कत्थनावाक्यं विज्ञास्यति सुयोधनः। आचितं शरजालेन मया दृष्ट्वा पितामहम्
Tomorrow, Suyodhana will understand the meaning of his boastful words, when he sees the grandsire covered by my shower of arrows.
यदुक्तश्च सभामध्ये पुरुषो ह्रस्वदर्शनः। क्रुद्धेन भीमसेनेन भ्राता दुःशासनस्तव
And what was said in the midst of the assembly by that short-sighted man—your brother Duhshasana—when Bhimasena, enraged, spoke?
अधर्मज्ञो नित्यवैरी पापबुद्धिर्नृशंसकृत्। सत्यां प्रतिज्ञामचिराद्द्रक्ष्यसे तां सुयोधन
You, Suyodhana, who are ignorant of righteousness, ever hostile, wicked-minded, and cruel, will soon see that promise fulfilled.
अभिमानस्य दर्पस्य क्रोधपारुष्ययोस्तथा। नैष्ठुर्यस्यावलेपस्य आत्मसंभावनस्य च
Of arrogance, pride, harshness born of anger, stubbornness, conceit, and self-importance—
नृशंसतायास्तैक्ष्ण्यस्य धर्मविद्वेषणस्य च। अधर्मस्यातिवादस्य वृद्धातिक्रमणस्य च
Of cruelty, sharpness, hatred of righteousness, unrighteousness, excessive speech, and transgressing elders—
दर्शनस्य च चक्रस्य कृत्स्नस्यापनयस्य च। द्रक्ष्यसि त्वं फलं तीव्रमचिरेण सुयोधन
And of your distorted vision, and the removal of your entire circle—you will soon see the fierce fruit, Suyodhana.
वासुदेवद्वितीये हि मयि क्रुद्धे नराधम। आशा ते जीविते मूढ राज्ये वा केन हेतुना
With Vāsudeva as my ally and myself enraged, O lowest of men, what hope can you have, fool, for life or kingdom?
शान्ते भीष्मे तथा द्रोणे सूतपुत्रे च पातिते। निराशो जीविते राज्ये पुत्रेषु च भविष्यसि
When Bhīṣma, Droṇa, and the son of the charioteer have fallen, you will be hopeless regarding life, kingdom, and sons.
भ्रातॄणां निधनं श्रुत्वा पुत्राणां च सुयोधन । भीमसेनेन निहतो दुष्कृतानि स्मरिष्यसि
When you hear of the death of your brothers and sons, Suyodhana, slain by Bhīmasena, you will remember your misdeeds.
न द्वितीयां प्रतिज्ञां हि प्रतिजानामि कैतव । सत्यं ब्रवीम्यहं ह्येतत्सर्वं सत्यं भविष्यति
I do not make a second promise, nor do I speak deceitfully; I speak the truth—this will all truly come to pass.
युधिष्ठिरोऽपि कैतव्यमुलूकमिदमब्रवीत्। उलूक मद्वचो ब्रूहि गत्वा तात सुयोधनम्
Yudhiṣṭhira also spoke these words to Ulūka: 'Ulūka, go and tell Suyodhana my message, dear one.'
स्वेन वृत्तेन मे वृत्तं नाधिगन्तुं त्वमर्हसि । उभयोरन्तरं वेद सूनृतानृतयोरपि
You should not judge my conduct by your own; know the difference between truth and falsehood, even in small matters.
न चाहं कामये पापमपि कीटपिपीलकयोः। किं पुनर्ज्ञातिषु वधं कामयेयं कथं च न
I do not wish harm even to insects or ants; how then could I desire the slaughter of relatives, or why would I?
एतदर्थं मया तात पञ्च ग्रामा वृताः पुरा। कथं तव सुदुर्बुद्धे न प्रेक्ष्ये व्यसनं महत्
For this reason, dear one, I once asked for just five villages; how could I, O you of wicked understanding, not foresee your great calamity?
स त्वं कामपरीतात्मा मूढभावाच्च कत्थसे। तथैव वासुदेवस्य न गृह्णासि हितं वचः
But you, overcome by desire and delusion, boast; and in the same way, you do not accept the good counsel of Vāsudeva.
किंचेदानीं बहूक्तेन युध्यस्व सह बान्धवैः। मम विप्रियकर्तारं कैतव्य सह बान्धवैः
What is the use of many words now? Fight, along with your kinsmen, against me and those who have wronged me, O deceitful one, with your allies.
मम विप्रियकर्तारं कैतव्य ब्रूहि कौरवम् ।। श्रुतं वाक्यं गृहीतोऽर्थो मतं यत्ते तथास्तु तत्
Tell the Kaurava, O deceitful one, who has wronged me: 'The words have been heard, the meaning understood, and your opinion is known—so be it.'
भीमसेनस्ततो वाक्यं भूय आह नृपात्मजम् ।। उलूक मद्वचो ब्रूहि दुर्मतिं पापपूरुषम्
Then Bhīmasena again spoke to the prince: 'Ulūka, deliver my message to that evil-minded, sinful man.'
शठं नैकृतिकं पापं दुराचारं सुयोधनम् ।। गृध्रोदरे वा वस्तव्यं पुरे वा नागसाह्वये
'To that deceitful, wicked, evil-doer, Suyodhana, who behaves badly: it is better to live in a vulture's belly or in the city of the Nāgas than with him.'
प्रतिज्ञातं मया यच्च सभामध्ये नराधम ।। कर्ताहं तद्वचः सत्यं सत्येनैव शपामि ते
'What I vowed in the middle of the assembly, O lowest of men, I will do; that word is true, and I swear it to you by truth itself.'
दुःशासनस्य रुधिरं हत्वा पास्याम्यहं मृधे ।। सक्थिनी तव भंक्त्वैव हत्वा हि तव सोदनान्
I will drink the blood of Duḥśāsana, having slain him in battle; and I will break your thighs and kill your brothers as well.
सर्वेषां राजपुत्राणामभिमन्युरसंशयम् । कर्मणा तोषयिष्यामि भूयश्चैव वचः श्रृणु
I will surely satisfy the wrath of all the princes by my deeds; and now, listen again to my words.
हत्वा सुयोधन त्वां वै सहितं सर्वसोदरैः । आक्रमिष्ये पदा मूर्ध्नि धर्मराजस्य पश्यतः
Having slain you, Suyodhana, together with all your brothers, I will trample upon your head with my foot in the presence of King Yudhishthira.
नकुलस्तु ततो वाक्यमिदमाह महीपते। उलूक ब्रूहि कौरव्यं धार्तराष्ट्रं सुयोधनम्
Then Nakula spoke these words, O king: 'Ulūka, say this to the Kaurava, Duryodhana, son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra.'
श्रुतं ते गदतो वाक्यं सर्वमेव यथातथम्। तथा कर्तास्मि कौरव्य यथा त्वमनुशासि मां
'All that you have said has been heard by me exactly as it is; so, Kaurava, I will act just as you instruct me.'
सहदेवोऽपि नृपते इदमाह वचोऽर्थवत् । सुयोधन मतिर्या ते वृथैषा ते भविष्यति
Sahadeva also, O king, spoke these meaningful words: 'Suyodhana, the intention you have will be in vain.'
शोचिष्यसे महाराज सपुत्रज्ञातिबान्धवः । इमं च क्लेशमस्माकं हृष्टो यत्त्वं विकत्थसे
'You will grieve, O great king, along with your sons, kinsmen, and relatives; and you boast joyfully about this hardship of ours.'
विराटद्रुपदौ वृद्धावुलूकमिदमूचतुः । दासभावं नियच्छेव साधोरिति मतिः सदा। तौ च दासावदासौ वा पौरुषं यस्य यादृशम्
The aged Virāṭa and Drupada said this to Ulūka: 'Let the state of servitude be imposed on the wicked; this is always our view. Whether as servants or masters, a man's worth is as his manliness.'
