मद्विधो नापि नृपतिस्त्वयि युक्तः कथंचन । सन्नाहं संयुगे कर्तुं कंसभृत्ये विशेषतः
A king like me is in no way fit to arm himself in battle against you, especially you, a servant of Kamsa.
तं च तूबरकं बालं बह्वाशिनमविद्यकम् । उलूक मद्वचो ब्रूहि असकृद्भीमसेनकम्
And that weak, ignorant boy, always eating much—Uluka, tell Bhimasena my words again and again.
विराटनगरे पार्थ यस्त्वं सूदो ह्यभूः पुरा। बल्लवो नाम विख्यातस्तन्ममैव हि पौरुषम्
In the city of Virata, Partha, you were once a cook, known as Vallava; that was my own prowess.
प्रतिज्ञातं सभामध्ये न तन्मिथ्या त्वया पुरा। दुःशासनस्य रुधिरं पीयतां यदि शक्यते
What you vowed in the middle of the assembly was not false; let Duhshasana's blood be drunk, if you are able.
यद्ब्रवीषि च कौन्तेय धार्तराष्ट्रानहं रणे। निहनिष्यामि तरसा तस्य कालोऽयमागतः
And what you say, son of Kunti, that you will slay the sons of Dhritarashtra in battle by force—now the time for that has come.
त्वं हि भोज्ये पुरस्कार्यो भक्ष्ये पेये च भारत । क्व युद्धं क्व च भोक्तव्यं युध्यस्व पुरुषो भव
You, O Bharata, are fit to be honored with food and drink; what place has battle for you, and what place enjoyment? Fight and be a man.
शयिष्यसे हतो भूमौ गदामालिङ्ग्य भारत। तद्वृथा च सभामध्ये वल्गितं ते वृकोदर
You will lie slain on the ground, embracing your mace, O Bharata; and your boasting in the assembly, O Vrikodara, will be in vain.
उलूक नकुलं ब्रूहि वचनान्मम भारत। युध्द्यस्वाद्य स्थिरो भूत्वा पश्यामस्तव पौरुषम्
Uluka, say this to Nakula on my behalf, O Bharata: 'Fight today with firmness; let us see your manliness.'
युधिष्ठिरानुरागं च द्वेषं च मयि भारत। कृष्णायाश्च परिक्लेशं स्मरेदानीं यथातथम्
Let him now remember, O Bharata, Yudhishthira's affection and his own hatred for me, and the suffering of Krishna, just as it truly was.
ब्रूयास्त्वं सहदेवं च राजमध्ये वचो मम। युद्ध्येदानीं रणे यत्तः क्लेशान्स्मर च पाण्डव
Say this also to Sahadeva in the midst of the kings, on my behalf: 'Now fight in battle with all your might, and remember your hardships, O Pandava.'
विराटद्रुपदौ चोभौ ब्रूयास्त्वं वचनान्मम । न दृष्टपूर्वा भर्तारो भृत्यैरपि महागुणैः । तथार्थपतिभिर्भृत्या यतः सृष्टाः प्रजास्ततः
Say this to both Virata and Drupada on my behalf: 'Never before have masters been seen with such great virtues, nor servants with such qualities; for servants are created for the sake of their masters, and from them people arise.'
अश्लाघ्योऽयं नरपतिर्युवयोरिति चागतम्
And say that this king is not worthy of praise by you both, and that this has come to pass.
ते यूयं संहता भूत्वा तद्वधार्थं ममापि च। आत्मार्थं पाण्डवार्थं च प्रयुद्ध्यध्वं मया सह
You all, uniting together, should fight for the sake of killing me, for your own sake and for the sake of the Pandavas, together with me.
धृष्टद्युम्नं च पाञ्चाल्यं ब्रूयास्त्वं वचनान्मम। एष ते समयः प्राप्तो लब्धव्यश्च त्वयापि सः
Say this also to Dhrishtadyumna, the son of Panchala, on my behalf: 'Now the appointed time has come for you, and you must obtain what was promised.'
द्रोणमासाद्य समरे ज्ञास्यसे हितमुत्तमम् । युद्ध्यस्व समुहृत्पापं कुरु कर्म सुदुष्करम्
When you meet Drona in battle, you will know the highest good; fight, having cast off sin, and perform the most difficult deed.
शिखण्डिनमथो ब्रूहि उलूक वचनान्मम । स्त्रीति मत्वा महाबाहुर्न हनिष्यति कौरवः
Say this to Shikhandin on my behalf, Uluka: 'Because he is thought to be a woman, the mighty-armed Kaurava will not slay him.'
गाङ्गेयो धन्विनां श्रेष्ठो युद्ध्येदानीं सुनिर्भयः । कुरु कर्म रणे यत्तः पश्यामः पौरुषं तव
The son of Ganga, foremost among archers, should now fight without fear; act with all your might in battle, and let us see your valor.
एवमुक्त्वा ततो राजा प्रहस्योलूकमब्रवीत्। धनञ्जयं पुनर्ब्रूहि वासुदेवस्य श्रृण्वतः
Having spoken thus, the king then smiled and said to Uluka: 'Say this again to Dhananjaya, in the hearing of Vasudeva.'
अस्मान्वा त्वं पराजित्य प्रसाधि पृतिवीमिमाम् । अथवा निर्जितोस्माभी रणे वीर शयिष्यसि
Either you will conquer us and rule this earth, or, if defeated by us in battle, you will lie slain, O hero.
राष्ट्रान्निर्वासनक्लेशं वनवासं च पाण्डव । कृष्णायाश्च परिक्लेशं संस्मरन्पुरुषो भव
Remember, O Pandava, the suffering of exile from the kingdom, the hardship of dwelling in the forest, and the affliction of Krishna, and be a man.
यदर्थं क्षत्रिया सूते सर्वं तदिदमागतम् । बलं वीर्यं च शौर्यं च परं चाप्यस्त्रलाघवम्
For the sake of which Kshatriyas are born, all this has now come: strength, valor, heroism, and supreme skill in weapons.
पौरुषं दर्शयन्युद्धे कोपस्य कुरु निष्कृतिम्। परिक्लिष्टस्य दीनस्य दीर्घकालोषितस्य च। हृदयं कस्य न स्फोटेदैश्वर्याद्धंशितस्य च
Show your manliness in battle; make amends for your anger. Whose heart would not break, having been long afflicted, distressed, and deprived of sovereignty?
कुले जातस्य शूरस्य परिवित्तेष्वगृध्यतः। आस्थितं राज्यमाक्रम्य कोपं कस्य न दीपयेत्
Who, having been born in a noble family, possessing courage, and not coveting others' wealth, would not be inflamed with anger when his rightful kingdom is seized?
यत्तदुक्तं महद्वाक्यं कर्मणा तद्विभाव्यताम्। अकर्मणा कत्थितेन सन्तः कुपुरुषं विदुः
Let that great statement which was spoken be proven by action; the wise recognize a worthless man by his boasting without deeds.
अमित्राणां वशे स्थानं राज्यं च पुनरुद्धर। द्वावर्थौ युद्धकामस्य तस्मात्तत्कुरु पौरुषम्
Regain the kingdom from the control of enemies; both these aims are for one who desires battle. Therefore, exert your manliness.
पराजितोऽसि द्यूतेन कृष्णा चानायिता सभाम् । शक्योऽमर्षो मनुष्येण कर्तु पुरुषमानिना
You were defeated in dice, and Krishna was brought into the assembly; such humiliation can be endured by a man who values his manhood.
द्वादशैव तु वर्षाणि वने धिष्ण्याद्विवासितः। संवत्सरं विराटस्य दास्यमास्थाय चोषितः
For twelve years you were exiled in the forest, and for one year you lived in service in Virata's household.
राष्ट्रान्निर्वासनक्लेशं वनवासं च पाण्डव । कृष्णायाश्च परिक्लेशं संस्मरन्पुरुषो भव
Remember the hardship of exile from your kingdom, the suffering of living in the forest, and the distress endured by Krishna, O Pandava, and be a man.
अप्रियाणां च वचनं प्रब्रुवत्सु पुनः पुनः । अमर्षं दर्शयस्व त्वममर्षो ह्येव पौरुषम्
When unpleasant words are spoken again and again, show your indignation; for indignation itself is manliness.
क्रोधो बलं तथा वीर्यं ज्ञानयोगोऽस्त्रलाघवम्। इह ते दृश्यतां पार्थ युद्ध्यस्व पुरुषो भव
Let your anger, strength, valor, knowledge, mastery of weapons, and skill be seen here, O Partha; fight and be a man.
