यदर्थं वनवासश्च प्राप्तं दुःखं च यन्मया। सोयमस्मानुपैत्येव परोऽनर्थः प्रयत्नतः
The very misfortune for which I endured exile in the forest and all that suffering has now come upon us with even greater force, despite all our efforts.
यस्मिन्यत्नः कृतोऽस्माभिः स नो हीनः प्रयत्नतः। अकृते तु प्रयत्नेऽस्मानुपावृत्तः कलिर्महान्
That for which we strove with such effort has been lost to us despite our exertions; and because we did not act with sufficient effort, great calamity has overtaken us.
कथं ह्यवध्यैः सङ्ग्रामः कार्यः सह भविष्यति। कथं हत्वा गुरून्वृद्धान्विजयो नो भविष्यति
How can battle be waged with those whom it is wrong to slay? How can victory be ours if we must kill our elders and teachers?
तच्छ्रुत्वा धर्मराजस्य सव्यसाची परन्तपः। यदुक्तं वासुदेवेन श्रावयामास तद्वचः
Hearing the words of the righteous king, Savyasācin, the scorcher of foes, recited to him what Vāsudeva had spoken.
उक्तवान्देवकीपुत्रः कुन्त्याश्च विदुरस्य च । वचनं तत्त्वया राजन्निखिलेनावधारितम्
The son of Devakī spoke the words of Kuntī and Vidura, and you, O King, have fully understood their meaning.
न च तौ वक्ष्यतोऽधर्ममिति मे नैष्ठिकी मतिः। नापि युक्तं च कौन्तेय निवर्तितुमयुध्यतः
I do not believe that either of them spoke anything unrighteous; nor, son of Kuntī, is it proper for you to withdraw without fighting.
तच्छ्रुत्वा वासुदेवोऽपि सव्यसाचिवचस्तदा । स्मयमानोऽब्रवीद्वाक्यं पार्थमेवमिति ब्रुवन्
Hearing Savyasācin's words, Vāsudeva smiled and spoke these words to Pārtha.
ततस्ते धृतसंकल्पा युद्धाय सह सैनिकाः। पाण्डवेया महाराज तां रात्रिं सुखमावसन्
Then, resolute in their purpose for battle, the sons of Pāṇḍu, together with their soldiers, spent that night in comfort, O great king.
व्युष्टायां वै रजन्यां हि राजा दुर्योधनस्ततः। व्यभजत्तान्यनिकानि दश चैकं च भारत
When the night had passed, King Duryodhana then divided those eleven divisions, O descendant of Bharata.
नरहस्तिरथाश्वानां सारं मध्यं च फल्गु च। सर्वेष्वेतेष्वनीकेषु सन्दिदेश नराधिपः
The king assigned the best, the central, and the weakest parts of all these divisions of men, elephants, chariots, and horses.
सानुकर्षाः सतूणीराः सवरूथाः सतोमराः। सोपासङ्गाः सशक्तीकाः सनिषङ्गाः सहर्ष्टयः
All were equipped with followers, quivers, chariots, spears, side-arms, lances, and arrows.
सध्वजाः सपताकाश्च सशरासनतोमराः । रज्जुभिश्च विचित्राभिः सपाशाः सपरिच्छदाः
All were adorned with banners and flags, armed with bows, arrows, and spears, and furnished with various ropes, lassos, and ornaments.
सकचग्रहविक्षेपाः सतैलगुडवालुकाः । साशीविषघटाः सर्वे ससर्जरसपांसवः
All were supplied with grappling hooks, oil-cakes, sand, pots of poison, and dust of resin.
सघण्टफलकाः सर्वे सायोगुडजलोपलाः ।। सशालभिन्दिपालाश्च समधूच्छिष्टमुद्गराः
All were equipped with shields with bells, clubs smeared with oil and honey, and maces with iron spikes.
सकाण्डदण्डकाः सर्वे ससीरविषतोमराः । सशूर्पपिटकाः सर्वे सदात्राङ्कुशतोमराः
All had staves with iron tips, poisoned spears, winnowing baskets, axes, goads, and lances.
सकीलकवचाः सर्वे वाशीवृक्षादनान्विताः। व्याघ्रचर्मपरीवारा द्वीपिचर्मावृताश्च ते
All wore mail with spikes, carried axes and clubs, were adorned with tiger skins, and covered with leopard skins.
सहर्ष्टयः सश्रृङ्गाश्च सप्रासविविधायुधाः । सकुठाराः सकुद्दालाः सतैलक्षौमसर्पिषः
All had maces, horns, various spears, axes, spades, and were supplied with oil, silk, and clarified butter.
रुक्मजालप्रतिच्छन्ना नानामणिविभूषिताः । चित्रानीकाः सुवपुषो ज्वलिता इव पावकाः
Clad in golden mesh and adorned with various jewels, their splendid divisions shone like blazing fires.
तथा कवचिनः शूराः शस्त्रेषु कृतनिश्चयाः । कुलीना हययोनिज्ञाः सारथ्ये विनिवेशिताः
Thus, valiant warriors wearing armor, resolute in weapons, of noble lineage, and skilled in the breeding of horses, were assigned as charioteers.
बद्धारिष्टा बद्धकक्षा बद्धध्वजपताकिनः। बद्धाभरणनिर्यूहा बद्धचर्मासिपट्टिशाः
With secured armor, fastened belts, banners and pennants attached, adorned with fixed ornaments, and equipped with bound shields and sword-belts.
चतुर्युजो रथाः सर्वे सर्वे चोत्तमवाजिनः । सप्रासऋष्टिकाः सर्वे सर्वे शतशरासनाः
All the chariots were four-wheeled, all drawn by excellent steeds, all equipped with spears and lances, all bearing bows with a hundred arrows.
धुर्ययोर्हकययोरेकस्तथान्यौ पर्ष्णिसारथी । तौ चापि रथिनां श्रेष्ठौ रथी च हयवित्तथा
On each chariot, one held the reins, another stood as the rear-guard charioteer; both were the best among charioteers, and the charioteer was also knowledgeable about horses.
नगराणीव गुप्तानि दुराधर्षाणि शत्रुभिः । आसन्रथसहस्राणि हेममालीनि सर्वशः
Like well-guarded cities, unassailable by enemies, there stood thousands of chariots, all adorned with golden garlands.
यथा रथास्तथा नागा बद्धकक्षाः स्वलङ्कृताः । बभूवुः सप्तपुरुषा रत्नवन्त इवाद्रयः
Just as with the chariots, so too the elephants, with fastened belts and splendidly decorated, stood seven men each, like mountains rich in gems.
द्वावङ्कुशधरौ तत्र द्वावुत्तमधनुर्धरौ । द्वौ वरासिधरौ राजन्नेकः शक्तिपिनाकधृत्
There, two bore goads, two were excellent bowmen, two wielded fine swords, and one held a spear and a bow.
गजैर्मत्तैः समाकीर्णं सर्वमायुधकोशकैः। तद्बभूव बलं राजन्कौरव्यस्य महात्मनः
The entire force of the great-souled Kaurava was filled with intoxicated elephants, equipped with all kinds of weapons and armories.
आमुक्तकवचैर्युक्तैः सपताकैः स्वलङ्कृतैः । सादिभिश्चोपपन्नास्तु तथा चायुतशो हयाः
With armor donned, adorned with banners and well-ornamented, and accompanied by riders, so too were the tens of thousands of horses prepared.
असङ्ग्राहाः सुसंपन्ना हेमभाण्डपरिच्छदाः। अनेकशतसाहस्राः सर्वे सादिवशे स्थिताः
Unrestrainable, well-equipped, with golden trappings and fittings, countless by the hundreds of thousands, all with riders in their proper places.
नानारूपविकाराश्च नानाकवचशस्त्रिणः । पदातिनो नरास्तत्र बभूवुर्हेममालिनः
There, foot soldiers of various forms and appearances, with diverse armor and weapons, stood adorned with golden garlands.
रथस्यासन्दश गजा गजस्य दश वाजिनः । नरा दश हयस्यासन्पादरक्षाः समन्ततः
For each chariot, there were ten elephants; for each elephant, ten horses; and for each horse, ten foot soldiers stationed all around as guards.
