कर्णस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा केशवः परवीरहा। उवाच प्रहसन्वाक्यं स्मितपूर्वमिदं यथा
Hearing Karna’s words, Keshava, destroyer of enemy heroes, smiled and spoke these words, preceded by a gentle laugh.
अपि त्वां न लभेत्कर्ण राज्यलम्भोपपादनम् । मया दत्तां हि पृथिवीं न प्रशासितुमिच्छसि
But, Karna, you will not obtain the kingdom by seizing it; for though I have offered you the earth, you do not wish to rule it.
ध्रुवो जयः पाण्डवानामितीदं न संशयः कश्चन विद्यतेऽत्र। जयध्वजो दृश्यते पाण्डवस्य समुच्छ्रितो वानरराज उग्रः
The victory of the Pandavas is certain—there is no doubt at all in this; the banner of victory, bearing the fierce king of monkeys, is seen raised for the Pandava.
दिव्या माया विहिता भौमनेन समुच्छ्रिता इन्द्रकेतुप्रकाशाः । दिव्यानि भूतानि जयावहानि दृश्यन्ति चैवात्र भयानकानि
Divine illusions have been arranged by the son of Bhumi, and banners shining like Indra’s standard are raised; divine beings, both victorious and terrifying, are seen here.
न सञ्जते शैलवनस्पतिभ्य ऊर्ध्वं तिर्यग्योजनमात्ररूपः । श्रीमान्ध्वजः कर्ण धनञ्जयस्य समुच्छ्रितः पावकतुल्यरूपः
The illustrious banner of Dhananjaya, O Karna, rises high above the mountains and trees, extending upward and sideways for a yojana, blazing like fire.
यदा द्रक्ष्यसि सङ्ग्रामे श्वेताश्वं कृष्णसारथिम् । ऐन्द्रमस्त्रं विकुर्वाणमुभे चाप्यग्निमारुते
When you see in battle the white-horsed one with Krishna as charioteer, wielding the weapon of Indra and employing both fire and wind,
गाण्डीवस्य च निर्घोषं विस्फूर्जितमिवाशनेः। न तदा भविता त्रेता न कृतं द्वापरं न च
And when you hear the thunderous roar of Gandiva, like the crash of lightning—then, there will be neither Treta, nor Krita, nor Dvapara age.
यदा द्रक्ष्यसि सङ्ग्रामे कुन्तीपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम् । जपहोमसमायुक्तं स्वां रक्षन्तं महाचमूम्
When you see in battle Yudhishthira, son of Kunti, engaged in muttered prayers and oblations, protecting his great army,
आदित्यमिव दुर्धर्षं तपन्तं शत्रुवाहिनीम् । न तदा भविता त्रेता न कृतं द्वापरं न च
Radiant and unassailable like the sun, scorching the enemy’s forces—then, there will be neither Treta, nor Krita, nor Dvapara age.
यदा द्रक्ष्यसि सङ्ग्रामे भीमसेनं महाबलम् । दुःशासनस्य रुधिरं पीत्वा नृत्यन्तमाहवे
When you see in battle Bhimasena, of great strength, dancing in the fight after drinking Duhshasana’s blood,
प्रभिन्नमिव मातङ्गं प्रतिद्विरदघातिनम् । न तदा भविता त्रेता न कृतं द्वापरं न च
Like a maddened elephant breaking loose, striking down opposing elephants—then, there will be neither Treta, nor Krita, nor Dvapara age.
यदा द्रक्ष्यसि सङ्ग्रामे द्रोणं शान्तनवं कृपम् । सुयोधनंच राजानं सैन्धवं च जयद्रथम्
When you see in battle Drona, son of Shantanu, Kripa, King Suyodhana, Saindhava, and Jayadratha,
युद्धायापततस्तूर्णं वारितान्सव्यसाचिना। न तदा भविता त्रेता न कृतं द्वापरं न च
Rushing swiftly to fight, yet checked by Savyasachi—then, there will be neither Treta, nor Krita, nor Dvapara age.
यदा द्रक्ष्यसि सङ्ग्रामे माद्रीपुत्रौ महाबलौ । वाहिनीं धार्तराष्ट्राणां क्षोभयन्तौ गजाविव
When you see in battle the two sons of Madri, mighty in strength, agitating the army of the Dhartarashtras like elephants—
विगाढे शस्त्रसंपाते परवीररथारुजौ । न तदा भविता त्रेता न कृतं द्वापरं न च
When the clash of weapons grows fierce and the chariots of mighty warriors are shattered, then neither the Treta, nor the Krita, nor the Dvapara age will exist.
ब्रूयाः कर्ण इतो गत्वा द्रोणं शान्तनवं कृपम् । सौम्योऽयं वर्तते मासः सुप्रापयवसेन्धनः
Go, Karna, and tell Drona, Kripa, and the son of Shantanu: this month is gentle, with abundant grain and fuel.
सर्वौषधिवनस्फीतः फलवानल्पमक्षिकः । निष्पङ्को रसवत्तोयो नात्युष्णशिशिरः सुखः
The forests are rich with all herbs, bearing plentiful fruit and few bees; the water is pure and flavorful, neither too hot nor too cold, and pleasant.
सप्तमाच्चापि दिवसादमावास्या भविष्यति। सङ्ग्रामो युज्यतां तस्यां तामाहुः शक्रदेवताम्
From the seventh day onward, the new moon will arrive; let the battle be joined then, for that day is said to be sacred to Indra.
तथा राज्ञो वदेः सर्वान्ये युद्धायाभ्युपागताः। यद्वो मनीषितं तद्वै सर्वं संपादयाम्यहम्
Tell the king and all those gathered for war: whatever you desire, I will accomplish it all.
राजानो राजपुत्राश्च दुर्योधनवशानुगाः । प्राप्य शस्त्रेण निधनं प्राप्स्यन्ति गतिमुत्तमाम्
Kings and princes, obedient to Duryodhana, will meet their end by weapons and attain the highest path.
केशवस्य तु तद्वाक्यं कर्णः श्रुत्वा हितं शुभम्। अब्रवीदभिसंपूज्य कृष्णं तं मधुसूदनम्
Hearing these beneficial and auspicious words of Kesava, Karna honored Krishna, the slayer of Madhu, and spoke.
जानन्मां किं महाबाहो संमोहयितुमिच्छसि। योयं पृथिव्याः कार्त्स्न्येन विनाशः समुपस्थितः
Knowing me, O mighty-armed one, why do you wish to bewilder me, when the destruction of the whole earth is at hand?
निमित्तं तत्र शकुनिरहं दुःशासनस्तथा। दुर्योधनश्च नृपतिर्धृतराष्ट्रसुतोऽभवत्
The cause here is Shakuni, myself, Duhshasana, and Duryodhana, the king, son of Dhritarashtra.
असंशयमिदं कृष्ण महद्युद्धमुपस्थितम्। पाण्डवानां कुरूणां च घोरं रुधिरकर्दमम्
Without doubt, Krishna, a great war is approaching, dreadful and muddy with blood, between the Pandavas and the Kurus.
राजानो राजपुत्राश्च दुर्योधनवशानुगाः । रणे शस्त्राग्निना दग्धाः प्राप्स्यन्ति यमसादनम्
Kings and princes, obedient to Duryodhana, burned by the fire of weapons in battle, will reach the abode of Yama.
स्वप्ना हि बहवो घोरा दृश्यन्ते मधुसूदन। निमित्तानि च घोराणि तथोत्पाताः सुदारुणाः
Many terrible dreams are seen, O Madhusudana, and dreadful omens and fierce portents appear.
पराजयं धार्तराष्ट्रे विजयं च युधिष्ठिरे । संसन्त इव वार्ष्णेय विविधा रोमहर्षणाः
Defeat for the sons of Dhritarashtra and victory for Yudhishthira are foretold, O descendant of Vrishni, by various hair-raising signs.
प्राजापत्यं हि नक्षत्रं ग्रहस्तीक्ष्णो महाद्युतिः । शनैश्चरः पीडयति पीडयन्प्राणिनोऽधिकम्
The Prajapatya star is afflicted by a fierce and radiant planet; Saturn torments living beings greatly.
कृत्वा चाङ्गारको वक्रं ज्येष्ठायां मधुसूदन। अनुराधां प्रार्थयते मैत्रं संगमयन्निव
Mars, having turned retrograde in Jyeshtha, seeks Anuradha, as if uniting with the Maitra constellation, O Madhusudana.
नूनं महद्भयं कृष्ण कुरूणां समुपस्थितम् । विशेषेण हि वार्ष्णेय चित्रां पीडयते ग्रहः
Surely, Krishna, great danger has come upon the Kurus; especially, O descendant of Vrishni, the planet afflicts the constellation Chitra.
