महानयं कृष्ण कृतः क्षत्रस्य समुदानयः । राज्यं प्राप्तमिदं दीप्तं प्रथितं सर्वराजसु
This great assembly of kshatriyas has been gathered, O Krishna; this kingdom, resplendent and renowned among all kings, has been attained.
धार्तराष्ट्रस्य वार्ष्णेय शस्त्रयज्ञो भविष्यति। अस्य यज्ञस्य वेत्ता त्वं भविष्यसि जनार्दन
For the son of Dhritarashtra, O descendant of Vrishni, there will be a sacrifice of weapons; and you, Janardana, will be the knower of this sacrifice.
आध्वर्यवं च ते कृष्ण ऋतावस्मिन्भविष्यति। होता चैवात्र बीभत्सुः सन्नद्धः स कपिध्वजः
You, Krishna, will be the chief priest in this rite; and Arjuna, armed and bearing the banner of Hanuman, will be the hotar here.
गाण्डीवं स्रुक् तथा चाज्यं वीर्यं पुंसां भविष्यति। ऐन्द्रं पाशुपतं ब्राह्मं स्थूणाकर्णं च माधव । मन्त्रास्तत्र भविष्यन्ति प्रयुक्ताः सव्यसाचिना
The Gandiva bow will be the ladle, clarified butter, and the valor of men; the mantras—Indra, Pashupata, Brahma, and Sthunakarna—will be employed there by Arjuna, O Madhava.
अनुयातश्च पितरमधिको वा पराक्रमे । गीतं स्तोत्रं स सौभद्रः सम्यक् तत्र भविष्यति
Abhimanyu, following or even surpassing his father in prowess, will be the one who sings the hymns and chants the praises there.
उद्गातात्र पुनर्भीमः प्रस्तोता सुमहाबलः । विनदन्स नरव्याघ्रो नागानीकान्तकृद्रणे
There Bhima, the tiger among men, will be the singer of the Sama hymns, roaring mightily and destroying the elephant divisions in battle.
स चैव तत्र धर्मात्मा शश्वद्राजा युधिष्ठिरः । जपैर्होमैश्च संयुक्तो ब्रह्मत्वं कारयिष्यति
And there, Yudhishthira, the righteous and eternal king, will attain to Brahmanhood through recitations and offerings.
शङ्खशब्दाः समुरजा भेर्यश्च मधुसूदन। उत्कृष्टः सिंहनादश्च सुब्रह्मण्यो भविष्यति
The sounds of conches, drums, and kettledrums, O Madhusudana, and the mighty lion’s roar will be the auspicious chants.
नकुलः सहदेवश्च माद्रीपुत्रौ यशस्विनौ । शामित्रं तौ महावीर्यौ सम्यक् तत्र भविष्यतः। `तौ मैत्रावरुणाग्नीध्रौ महावीर्यौ भविष्यतः
Nakula and Sahadeva, the illustrious sons of Madri, those two mighty warriors, will act as the priests of Mitra and Varuna in that great rite.
कल्माषदण्डा गोविन्द विमला रथपङ्क्तयः। यूपाः समुपकल्पन्तामस्मिन्यज्ञे जनार्दन
Let the sacrificial posts, O Govinda, be dark-stained clubs, and let the spotless lines of chariots be arranged as the altar in this sacrifice, O Janardana.
कर्णिनालीकनाराचा वत्सदन्तोपबृंहणाः । तोमराः सोमकलशाः पवित्राणि धनूंषि च
Ear-ornamented arrows, iron shafts, and barbed darts, strengthened with the teeth of calves, will be the spears, the soma vessels, the purifiers, and the bows.
असयोऽत्र कपालानि पुरोडाशाः शिरांसि च। हविस्तु रुधिरं कृष्ण तस्मिन्यज्ञे भविष्यति
Here, the swords will be the ladles, the skulls the offering bowls, the heads the sacrificial cakes; and, O Krishna, blood will be the oblation in that sacrifice.
इध्माः परिधयश्चैव शक्तयो विमला गदाः। सदस्या द्रोणशिष्याश्च कृपस्य च शरद्वतः
The fuel and enclosing sticks will be spotless spears and maces; and the assistants will be the disciples of Drona and of Kripa, son of Sharadvat.
इषवोऽत्र परिस्तोमा मुक्ता गाण्डीवधन्वना । महारथप्रयुक्ताश्च द्रोणद्रौणिप्रचोदिताः
Here, the arrows released from Gandiva will be the hymns of praise, and those launched by great charioteers, urged on by Drona and his son, will be the offerings.
प्रतिप्रास्थानिकं कर्म सात्यकिस्तु करिष्यति। दीक्षितो धार्तराष्ट्रोऽत्र पत्नी चास्य महाचमूः
Satyaki will perform the preliminary rites; Duryodhana will be the consecrated sacrificer here, and his great army will be his wife.
घटोत्कचोऽत्र शामित्रं करिष्यति महाबलः । अतिरात्रे महाबाहो वितते यज्ञकर्मणि
Ghatotkacha, of great strength, will act as the assistant priest in this extended midnight sacrifice, O mighty-armed one.
दक्षिणा त्वस्य यज्ञस्य धृष्टद्युम्नः प्रतापवान् । वैतानिके कर्ममुखे जातो यत्कृष्ण पावकात्
Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the valiant one born from fire, will be the sacrificial fee in this rite, at the commencement of the Vaitānika ceremony, O Krishna.
यदब्रुवमहं कृष्ण कटुकानि स्म पाण्डवान्। प्रियार्थं धार्तराष्ट्रस्य तेन तप्ये ह्यकर्मणा
Whatever harsh words I spoke to the Pandavas, O Krishna, for the sake of Duryodhana’s favor, by that wrongful act I am now tormented.
यदा द्रक्ष्यसि मां कृष्ण निहतं सव्यसाचिना । पुनश्चितिस्तदा चास्य यज्ञस्याथ भविष्यति
When you see me slain by Arjuna, O Krishna, then will be the final purification of this sacrifice.
दुःशासनस्य रुधिरं यदा पास्यति पाण्डवः । आनर्दं नर्दतः सम्यक् तदा सूयं भविष्यति
When Bhima drinks the blood of Duhshasana, roaring loudly as he vowed, then will be the libation of this sacrifice.
यदा द्रोणं च भीष्मं च पाञ्चाल्यौ पातयिष्यतः । तदा यज्ञावसानं तद्भविष्यति जनार्दन
When the sons of Draupadi bring down Drona and Bhishma, O Janardana, then will be the conclusion of this sacrifice.
दुर्योधनं यदा हन्ता भीमसेनो महाबलः । तदा समाप्स्यते यज्ञो धार्तराष्ट्रस्य माधव
When Bhimasena, of great might, slays Duryodhana, then, O Madhava, the sacrifice of the sons of Dhritarashtra will be complete.
स्नुषाश्च प्रस्नुषाश्चैव धृतराष्ट्रस्य सङ्गताः । हतेश्वरा नष्टपुत्रा हतनाथाश्च केशव
The daughters-in-law and granddaughters-in-law of Dhritarashtra, gathered together, deprived of their lords, bereft of sons, and left without protectors, O Keshava—
रुदन्त्यः सहगान्धार्या श्वगृध्रकुरराकुले । स यज्ञेऽस्मिन्नवभृथो भविष्यति जनार्दन
Weeping together with Gandhari, amidst the gathering of jackals, vultures, and crows, that will be the concluding bath of this sacrifice, O Janardana.
विद्यावृद्धा वयोवृद्धाः क्षत्रियाः क्षत्रियर्षभ । वृथा मृत्युं न कुर्वीरंस्त्वत्कृते मधुसूदन
The Kshatriyas, aged in knowledge and in years, O bull among Kshatriyas, should not meet death in vain for your sake, O Madhusudana.
शस्त्रेण निधनं गच्छेत्समृद्धं क्षत्रमण्डलम् । करुक्षेत्रे पुण्यतमे त्रैलोक्यस्यापि केशव
Let the circle of Kshatriyas meet their end by weapons, in the most sacred field of Kurukshetra, O Keshava, even if it be for the three worlds.
तदत्र पुण्डरीकाक्ष विधत्स्व यदभीप्सितम् । यथा कार्त्स्न्येन वार्ष्णेय क्षत्रं स्वर्गमवाप्नुयात्
Therefore, O lotus-eyed one, do what you desire here, so that, O descendant of Vrishni, the Kshatriya order may wholly attain heaven.
यावत्स्थास्यन्ति गिरयः सरितश्च जनार्दन । तावत्कीर्तिभवः शब्दः शाश्वतोयं भविष्यति
As long as the mountains and rivers endure, O Janardana, so long will this glorious fame and renown remain eternal.
ब्राह्मणाः कथयिष्यन्ति महाभारतमाहवम् । समागमेषु वार्ष्णेय क्षत्रियाणां यशोधनम्
The Brahmanas will recount the great battle of the Mahabharata, O descendant of Vrishni, the contest for glory among the Kshatriyas, in their gatherings.
समुपानय कौन्तेयं युद्धाय मम केशव । मन्त्रसंवरणं कुर्वन्नित्यमेव परन्तप
Bring the son of Kunti to battle with me, O Keshava, always arranging the secret counsel, O scorcher of foes.
