यत्र सा बृहती श्यामा सभायां रुदती तदा। अश्रौषीत्परुषा वाचस्तन्मे दुःखतरं महत्
But when that tall, dark woman wept in the assembly and I heard those harsh words—this is my greatest and deepest pain.
स्त्रीधर्मिणी वरारोहा क्षत्रधर्मरता सदा। नाध्यगच्छत्तदा नाथं कृष्णा नाथवती सती
She, ever devoted to the duty of women and to the warrior's code, that noble lady, Krishna, though possessed of a protector, found no protector then.
तं वै ब्रूहि महाबाहो सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरम् । अर्जुनं पुरुषव्याघ्रं द्रौपद्याः पदवीं चर
O mighty-armed one, go and tell Arjuna, foremost among all wielders of weapons and tiger among men, to follow the path of Draupadi.
विदितं हि तवात्यन्तं क्रूद्धाविव यमान्तकौ । भीमार्जुनौ नयेतां हि देवानपि परां गतिम्
For you know well that Bhima and Arjuna, fierce as Death and Time when enraged, could lead even the gods to their final end.
तयोश्चैतदवज्ञानं यत्सा कृष्णा सभागता। दुःशासनश्च यद्भीमं कटुकान्यभ्यभाषत
It is this disregard shown to them, when Krishna was brought into the assembly, and the harsh words Duhshasana spoke to Bhima.
पश्यतां कुरुवीराणां तच्च संस्मारयेः पुनः । पाण्डवान्कुशलं पृच्छेः सपुत्रान्कृष्णया सह
Remind them again of this, in the presence of the Kuru heroes; ask after the welfare of the Pandavas, their sons, and Krishna.
मां वै कुशलिनीं ब्रूयास्तेषु भूयो जनार्दन । अरिष्टं गच्छ पन्थानं पुत्रान्मे प्रतिपालय
Tell them I am well, O Janardana; may your path be safe, and protect my sons.
अभिवाद्याथ तां कृष्णः कृत्वा चापि प्रदक्षिणम्। निश्चक्राम महाबाहुः सिंहखेलगतिस्ततः
Then Krishna, having saluted her and circumambulated her, departed with lion-like stride.
ततो विसर्जयामास भीष्मादीन्कुरुपुङ्गवान्। आरोप्याथ रथे कर्णं प्रायात्सात्यकिना सह
Afterwards, he took leave of Bhishma and the other foremost Kurus, placed Karna on the chariot, and left together with Satyaki.
ततः प्रयाते दाशार्हे कुरवः सङ्गता मिथः । जजल्पुर्महदाश्चर्यं केशवे परमाद्भुतम्
When the descendant of Dasharha had departed, the Kurus gathered together and spoke of the wondrous and extraordinary deeds of Kesava.
प्रमूढा पृथिवी सर्वा मृत्युपाशवशीकृता । दुर्योधनस्य बालिश्यान्नैतदस्तीति चाब्रुवन्
All the earth, deluded and bound by the noose of death, said, 'This is not so,' because of Duryodhana's folly.
ततो निर्याय नगरात्प्रययौ पुरुषोत्तमः । मन्त्रयामास च तदा कर्णेन सुचिरं सह
Then the best of men left the city and conferred for a long time with Karna.
विसर्जयित्वा राधेयं सर्वयादवनन्दनः। ततो जवेन महता तूर्णमश्वानचोदयत्
Having taken leave of Radheya, the delight of all the Yadavas swiftly urged his horses onward with great speed.
ते पिबन्त इवाकाशं दारुकेण प्रचोदिताः । हया जग्मुर्महावेगा मनोमारुतरंहसः
Urged on by Daruka, the horses sped with tremendous force, as if drinking in the sky, swifter than the mind or the wind.
ते व्यतीत्य महाध्वानं क्षिप्रं श्येना इवाशुगाः । उच्चैर्जग्मुरुपप्लाव्यं शार्ङ्गधन्वानमावहन्
They quickly crossed the great road like swift hawks, and loudly entered Upaplavya, bringing the wielder of the Sharnga bow.
कुन्त्यास्तु वचनं श्रुत्वा भीष्मद्रोणौ महारथौ। दुर्योधनमिदं वाक्यमूचतुः शासनातिगम्
Hearing Kunti's words, the mighty car-warriors Bhishma and Drona spoke these words to Duryodhana, who disregarded their command.
श्रुतं ते पुरुषव्याघ्र कुन्त्याः कृष्णस्य संनिधौ । वाक्यमर्थवदत्युग्रमुक्तं धर्म्यमनुत्तमम्
You have heard, O tiger among men, the meaningful, intense, and supremely righteous words spoken by Kunti in Krishna's presence.
तत्करिष्यन्ति कौन्तेया वासुदेवस्य संमतम् । न हि ते जातु शाम्येरन्नृते राज्येन कौरव
The sons of Kunti will do what is approved by Vasudeva, O Kaurava, for they will never be at peace without the kingdom.
क्लेशिता हि त्वया पार्था धर्मपाशसितास्तदा। सभायां द्रौपदी चैव तैश्च तन्मर्षितं तव
You have tormented the sons of Pritha, binding them with the cords of duty, and Draupadi too in the assembly; all this has been endured by them.
कृतास्त्रं ह्यर्जुनं प्राप्य भीमं च कृतनिश्चयम् । गाण्डीवं चेषुधी चैव रथं च ध्वजमेव च
Having obtained Arjuna, accomplished in weapons, and Bhima, firm in resolve, with Gandiva, arrows, and chariot with banner,
नकुलं सहदेवं च बलवीर्यसमन्वितौ । सहायं वासुदेवं च न क्षंस्यति युधिष्ठिरः
Yudhishthira will not tolerate being separated from Nakula and Sahadeva, endowed with strength and valor, nor from Vasudeva as his ally.
प्रत्यक्षं ते महाबाहो यथा पार्थेन धीमता । विराटनगरे पूर्वं सर्वे स्म युधि निर्जिताः
You have seen for yourself, O mighty-armed one, how previously, in the city of Virata, all of us were defeated in battle by the wise Partha.
दानवा घोरकर्माणो निवातकवचा युधि। रौद्रमस्त्रं समादाय दग्धा वानरकेतुना
The Danavas of terrible deeds, the Nivatakavachas, were burned in battle by the wielder of the monkey-banner, using a fierce weapon.
कर्णप्रभृतयश्चेमे त्वं चापि कवची रथी। मोक्षितो घोषयात्रायां पर्याप्तं तन्निदर्शनम्
Karna and others like him, and you yourself, armored and on a chariot, were spared during the cattle-raid; let that be sufficient evidence.
प्रशाम्य भरतश्रेष्ठ भ्रातृभिः सह पाण्डवैः । रक्षेमां पृथिवीं सर्वां मृत्योर्दंष्ट्रान्तरं गताम्
Calm yourself, O best of Bharatas, and together with your brothers the Pandavas, let us protect this whole earth, now fallen into the jaws of death.
ज्येष्ठो भ्राता धर्मशीलो वत्सलः श्लक्ष्णवाक्कविः । तं गच्छ पुरुषव्याघ्रं व्यपनीयेह किल्बिषम्
Your eldest brother is righteous, affectionate, gentle in speech, and wise; go to that tiger among men, removing here all guilt.
दृष्टश्चेत्त्वं पाण्डवेन व्यपनीतशरासनः । प्रशान्तभ्रुकुटिः श्रीमान्कृता शान्तिःकुलस्य नः
If you are seen by the Pandava, with your bow set aside and your frown relaxed, then peace will be made for our family, and prosperity will follow.
तमभ्येत्य सहामात्यः परिष्वज्य नृपात्मजम् । अभिवादय राजानं यथापूर्वमरिन्दम
Approach him with your ministers, embrace the prince, and greet the king as before, O subduer of enemies.
अभिवादयमानं त्वां पाणिभ्यां भीमपूर्वजः । प्रतिगृह्णातु सौहार्दात्कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः
As you greet him with your hands, may Yudhishthira, son of Kunti and elder brother of Bhima, accept you in friendship.
सिंहस्कन्धोरुबाहुस्त्वां वृत्तायतमहाभुजः । परिष्वजतु बाहुभ्यां भीमः प्रहरतां वरः
Let Bhima, lion-shouldered, with broad, long, and mighty arms, embrace you with his arms, he who is foremost among strikers.
