सन्ति नैकशता भूयः सुहृदस्तव सञ्जय । सुखदुःखसहा वीर संग्रामादनिवर्तिनः
There are more than a hundred friends of yours, Sanjaya, steadfast in joy and sorrow, heroes who do not turn back from battle.
तादृशा हि सहाया वै पुरुषस्य बुभूषतः। इष्टं जिहीर्षतः किंचित्सचिवाः शत्रुकर्शन
Such companions are indeed fitting for a man who wishes to live, who desires something dear, and who seeks counselors to subdue his enemies.
तस्यास्त्वीदृशकं वाक्यं श्रुत्वापि स्वल्पचेतसः । तमस्त्वपागमत्तस्य सुचित्रार्थपदाक्षरम्
Even one of little understanding, upon hearing such words, would have the darkness of his mind dispelled by their clear and meaningful expression.
उदके नौरियं धार्या वक्तव्यं प्रवणे मया। यस्य मे भवती नेत्री भविष्यद्भूतिदर्शिनी
Just as a boat must be held steady on water, so must I speak carefully on a slope, for you are my guide, foreseeing future prosperity.
अहं हि वचनं त्वत्तः शुश्रूषुरपरापरम् । किञ्चित्किञ्चित्प्रतिवदंस्तूष्णीमासं मुहुर्मुहुः
Eager to hear your words, I listened to you again and again, sometimes replying briefly, sometimes remaining silent.
अतृप्यन्नमृतस्येव कृच्छ्राल्लब्धस्य बान्धवात्। उद्यच्छाम्येष शत्रूणां नियमार्थं जायय च
Like one unsatisfied with nectar obtained with difficulty from a relative, I now offer this for the restraint of enemies and for your wife.
सदश्च इव स क्षिप्तः प्रणुन्नो वाक्यसायकैः। तच्चकार तथा सर्वं यथावदनुशासनम्
He, like a good horse spurred on, driven by the arrows of words, did everything exactly as instructed.
इदमुद्धर्षणं भीमं तेजोवर्धनमुत्तमम् । राजानं श्रावयेन्मन्त्री सीदन्तं शत्रुपीडितम्
This stirring, formidable, and excellent encouragement, which increases valor, should be recited by a minister to a king who is discouraged and oppressed by enemies.
जयो नामेतिहासोऽयं श्रोतव्यो विजिगीषुणा। महीं विजयते क्षिप्रं श्रुत्वा शत्रूंश्च मर्दति
This tale of victory should be heard by one who desires conquest; having heard it, he quickly conquers the earth and crushes his foes.
इदं पुंसवनं चैव वीराजननमेव च। अभीक्ष्णं गर्भिणी श्रुत्वा ध्रुवं वीरं प्रजायते
This is both a rite for producing sons and for generating heroes; if a pregnant woman hears it repeatedly, surely a hero will be born.
विद्याशूरं तपःशूरं दानशूरं तपस्विनम् । ब्राह्मया श्रिया दीप्यमानं साधुवादे च संमतम्
A hero in learning, in asceticism, in generosity, and in penance, shining with Brahmanic splendor and esteemed for virtuous speech—
अर्चिष्मन्तं बलोपेतं महाभागं महारथम् । धृतिमन्तमनाधृष्यं जेतारमपराजितम्
Radiant, endowed with strength, greatly fortunate, a mighty charioteer, steadfast, invincible, and an unconquered victor—
नियन्तारमसाधूनां गोप्तारं धर्मचारिणाम् । ईदृशं क्षत्रिया सूते वीरं सत्यपराक्रमम्
A restrainer of the wicked, a protector of the righteous, such a Kshatriya is born—a hero of true valor.
अर्जुनं केशव ब्रूयास्त्वयि जाते स्म सूतके। उपोपविष्टा नारीभिराश्रमे परिवारिता
O Kesava, tell Arjuna that when you were born during the period of impurity, I was sitting surrounded by women in the hermitage.
अथान्तरिक्षे वागासीद्दिव्यरूपा मनोरमा । सहस्राक्षसमः कुन्ति भविष्यत्येष ते सुतः
Then, in the sky, a wondrous and divine voice was heard: 'O Kunti, your son will become equal to Indra of a thousand eyes.'
एष जेष्यति सङ्ग्रामे कुरून्सर्वान्समागतान्। भीमसेनद्वितीयश्च लोकमुद्वर्तयिष्यति
He will conquer in battle all the assembled Kurus, and, with Bhimasena as his second, he will raise up the world.
पुत्रस्ते पृथिवीं जेता यशश्चास्य दिवं स्पृशेत्। हत्वा कुरूंश्च सङ्ग्रामे वासुदेवसहायवान्
Your son will conquer the earth, and his fame will reach the heavens; having slain the Kurus in battle, aided by Vasudeva.
पित्र्यमंशं प्रनष्टं च पुनरप्युद्धरिष्यति । भ्रातृभिः सहितः श्रीमांस्त्रीन्मेधानाहरिष्यति
He will restore the lost ancestral share, and, together with his brothers, the glorious one will perform three great sacrifices.
स सत्यसन्धो बीभत्सुः सव्यसाची यथाच्युत । तथा त्वमेव जानासि बलवन्तं दुरासदम्
He is steadfast in truth, Arjuna, the ambidextrous archer; just as Achyuta, so you know him to be powerful and unassailable.
तथा तदस्तु दाशार्ह यथा वागभ्यभाषत । धर्मश्चेदस्ति वार्ष्णेय तथा सत्यं भविष्यति
So let it be, O Dasharha, as the voice has spoken; if righteousness exists, O descendant of Vrishni, so shall this come to pass.
त्वं चापि तत्तथा कृष्ण सर्वं संपादयिष्यसि । नाहं तदभ्यसूयामि यथा वागभ्यभाषत
And you, Krishna, will accomplish all this just so; I do not find fault with what the voice has declared.
नमो धर्माय महते धर्मो धारयति प्रजाः । एतद्धनञ्जयो वाच्यो नित्योद्युक्तो वृकोदरः
Homage to great Dharma, for Dharma upholds the people; let this be told to Dhananjaya, and let Vrikodara ever be diligent.
यदर्थं क्षत्रिया सूते तस्य कालोऽयमागतः। न हि वैरं समासाद्य सीदन्ति पुरुषर्षभाः
The time has come for which a Kshatriya is born; for, having encountered enmity, the foremost of men do not falter.
विदिता ते सदा बुद्धिर्भीमस्य न स शाम्यति। यावदन्तं न कुरुते शत्रूणां शत्रुकर्शनः
You always know the mind of Bhima—he does not rest until he brings the destruction of his enemies to completion.
तावदेव महापबाहुर्निशासु न सुखं लभेत्। सर्वधऱ्मविशेषज्ञां स्नुषां पाण्डोर्महात्मनः । व्रूया माधव कल्याणीं कृष्ण कृष्णां यशस्विनीम्
Until then, the mighty-armed one will find no comfort at night; O Madhava, speak to Krishna, the illustrious daughter-in-law of the great-souled Pandu, who knows all the subtleties of righteousness.
युक्तमेतन्महाभागे कुले जाते यशस्विनि । यन्मे पुत्रेषु सर्वेषु यथावत्त्वमवर्तिथाः
This is fitting, O greatly fortunate and renowned one, born in a noble line, that you have acted rightly towards all my sons.
माद्रीपुत्रौ च वक्तव्यौ क्षत्रधर्मरतावुभौ । विक्रमेणार्जितान्भोगान्वृणीतं जीवितादपि
The sons of Madri, devoted to the duty of warriors, should also be addressed; let them choose enjoyments won by valor, even above life itself.
विक्रमाधिगता ह्यर्थाः क्षत्रधर्मेण जीवतः । मनो मनुष्यस्य सदा प्रीणन्ति पुरुषोत्तम
For the wealth gained by valor, in accordance with the warrior's duty, always delights the mind of a man, O best of men.
यच्च वः प्रेक्षमाणानां सर्वधर्मोपचायिनाम्। पाञ्चाली परुषाण्युक्तका को नु तत्क्षन्तुमर्हति
And as for the harsh words spoken by Panchali in your presence, you who observe all duties—who indeed could forgive that?
न राज्यहरणं दुःखं द्यूते चापि पराजयः। प्रव्राजनं सुतानां वा न मे तद्दुःखकारणम्
The loss of the kingdom, defeat at dice, or even the exile of my sons—none of these is the cause of my sorrow.
