दुरात्मा राजपुत्रोऽयं धार्तराष्ट्रोऽनुपायवित्। मिथ्याभिमानी राज्यस्य क्रोधलोभवशानुगः
This prince, son of Dhritarashtra, is evil-minded and ignorant of proper means; falsely proud of the kingdom, he follows the sway of anger and greed.
कालपक्वमिदं मन्ये सर्वं क्षत्रं जनार्दन । सर्वे ह्यनुसृता मोहात्पार्थिवाः सह मन्त्रिभिः
O Janardana, I think all the kshatriyas are now ripe for destruction; for, out of delusion, all the kings, along with their ministers, have followed him.
भीष्मस्याथ वचः श्रुत्वा दाशार्हः पुष्करेक्षणः । भीष्मद्रोणमुखान्सर्वानभ्यभाषत वीर्यवान्
Hearing Bhishma’s words, the lotus-eyed descendant of Dasharha, valiant, addressed all those led by Bhishma and Drona.
सर्वेषां कुरुवृद्धानां महानयमतिक्रमः । प्रसह्य मन्दमैश्वर्ये न नियच्छन्ति यन्नृपम्
This is a great transgression among all the elders of the Kurus, that they do not restrain the king, who, seizing power, acts rashly.
तत्र कार्यमहं मन्ये कालप्राप्तमरिन्दमाः । क्रियमाणे भवेच्छ्रेयस्तत्सर्वं श्रृणुतानघाः
Therefore, O destroyers of foes, I think the time has come for action; if it is done, it will bring good—listen to all of it, O sinless ones.
प्रत्यक्षमेतद्भवतां यद्वक्ष्यामि हितं वचः । भवतामानुकूल्येन यदि रोचेत भारताः
What I am about to say is evident to you; it is wholesome advice. If it pleases you, O Bharatas, for your welfare, accept it.
पुत्रो वै भोजराजस्य दुराचारो ह्यनात्मवान् । जीवतः पितुरैश्वर्यं हृत्वा मृत्युवशं गतः
The son of the Bhoja king was indeed wicked and lacking in self-control; having seized his living father’s power, he met his end.
उग्रसेनसुतः कंसः परित्यक्तः स बान्धवैः। ज्ञातीनां हितकामेन मया शस्तो महामृधे
Kamsa, son of Ugrasena, was abandoned by his relatives; for the good of his kin, I slew him in great battle.
आहुकः पुनरस्माभिर्ज्ञातिभिश्चापि सत्कृतः । उग्रसेनः कृतो राजा भोजराजन्यवर्धनः
Afterwards, Ahuka was honored by us and by his kinsmen; Ugrasena was made king, the enhancer of the Bhoja dynasty.
संसमेकं परित्यज्य कुलार्थे सर्वयादवाः। संभूय सुखमेधन्ते भारतान्धकवृष्णयः
All the Yadavas, abandoning one for the sake of the clan, united and now live happily, O Bharatas, Andhakas, and Vrishnis.
अपि चाप्यवदद्राजन्परमेष्ठी प्रजापतिः । व्यूढे देवासुरे युद्धेऽभ्युद्यतेष्वायुधेषु च
And, O King, even the supreme lord, Prajapati, spoke when the gods and asuras were arrayed for battle and the weapons were raised.
द्वैधीभूतेषु लोकेषु विनश्यत्सु च भारत । अब्रवीत्तु तदा देवो भगवाँल्लोकभावनः
When the worlds were divided and perishing, O Bharata, then the divine, blessed creator of beings spoke these words.
पराभविष्यन्त्यसुरा दैतेया दानवैः सह । आदित्या वसवो रुद्रा भविष्यन्ति दिवौसकः
The asuras, the Daityas, along with the Danavas, will be defeated; the Adityas, Vasus, and Rudras will prevail in heaven.
देवासुरमनुष्याश्च गन्धर्वोरगराक्षसाः । अस्मिन्युद्धे सुसंक्रुद्धा हनिष्यन्ति परस्परम्
In this battle, gods, asuras, humans, gandharvas, serpents, and rākṣasas, all fiercely enraged, will slay one another.
वर्तमानं जगत्सर्वं मुहूर्तान्न भविष्यति।' इति मत्वाऽब्रवीद्धर्मं परमेष्ठी प्रजापतिः । वरुणाय प्रयच्छैतान्बद्ध्वा दैतेयदानवान्
Considering that the entire world will not exist even for a moment, the supreme creator, Prajapati, spoke to Dharma and said: 'Bind these Daityas and Danavas and hand them over to Varuna.'
एवमुक्तस्ततो धर्मो नियोगात्परमेष्ठिनः। वरुणाय ददौ सर्वान्बद्ध्वा दैतेयदानवान्
Thus addressed, Dharma, by the command of the supreme creator, bound all the Daityas and Danavas and gave them to Varuna.
तान्बद्ध्वा धर्मपाशैश्च स्वैश्च पाशैर्जलेश्वरः । वरुणः सागरे यत्तो नित्यं रक्षति दानवान्
Having bound them with the cords of Dharma and his own bonds, the lord of waters, Varuna, diligently guards the Danavas in the ocean at all times.
तथा दुर्योधनं कर्णं शकुनिं चापि सौबलम् । बद्ध्वा दुःशासनं चापि पाण्डवेभ्यः प्रयच्छत
In the same way, Duryodhana, Karna, Shakuni the Saubala, and also Duhshasana were bound and handed over to the Pandavas.
त्यजेत्कुलार्थे पुरुषं ग्रामस्यार्थे कुलं त्यजेत्। ग्रामं जनपदस्यार्थे आत्मार्थे पृथिवीं त्यजेत्
For the sake of the family, a man should be abandoned; for the sake of the village, the family should be abandoned; for the sake of the country, the village should be abandoned; and for one's own sake, the earth should be abandoned.
राजन्दुर्योधनं बद्ध्वा ततः संशाम्य पाण्डवैः । त्वत्कृते न विनश्येयुः क्षत्रियाः क्षत्रियर्षभ
O king, having bound Duryodhana, then making peace with the Pandavas, the Kshatriyas would not perish for your sake, O bull among Kshatriyas.
कृष्णस्य तु वचः श्रुत्वा धृतराष्ट्रो जनेश्वरः। विदुरं सर्वधर्मज्ञं त्वरमाणोऽभ्यभाषत
Hearing Krishna's words, Dhritarashtra, lord of people, quickly spoke to Vidura, who knows all dharmas.
गच्छ तात महाप्राज्ञ गान्धारीं दीर्घदर्शिनीम् । आनयेह तया सार्धमनुनेष्यामि दुर्मतिम्
Go, dear one, wise Vidura, bring Gandhari, who sees far; together with her, I will try to persuade the misguided one.
यदि सा न दुरात्मानं शमयेद्दुष्टचेतसम्। अपि कृष्णस्य सुहृदस्तिष्ठेम वचने वयम्
If she can restrain the evil-minded one, even we, Krishna's friends, might remain in accordance with his words.
दुर्बुद्धेर्दुःसहायस्य शमार्थं ब्रुवती वचः ।। अपि नो व्यसनं घोरं दुर्योधनकृतं महत्
If she speaks words for peace to the ill-minded, badly advised one, perhaps the terrible calamity caused by Duryodhana may be averted.
शमयेच्चिररात्राय योगक्षेमवदव्ययम् । राज्ञस्तु वचनं श्रुत्वा विदुरो दीर्घदर्शिनीम्
She may bring about peace for a long time, with welfare and security; hearing the king's words, Vidura brought the farsighted Gandhari.
आनयामास गान्धारीं धृतराष्ट्रस्य शासनात्
Vidura brought Gandhari at Dhritarashtra's command.
एष गान्धारि पुत्रस्ते दुरात्मा शासनातिगः । ऐश्वर्यलोभादैश्वर्यं जीवितं च प्रहास्यति
Here is Gandhari, your son, wicked-minded and disobedient; out of greed for power, he will lose both his kingdom and his life.
अशिष्टवदमर्यादः पापैः सह दुरात्मवान्। सभाया निर्गतो मूढो व्यतिक्रम्य सुहृद्वचः
He is rude, without respect, evil-minded, associating with the wicked; having left the assembly, he disregarded the words of his friends, acting foolishly.
सा भर्तृवचनं श्रुत्वा राजपुत्री यशस्विनी । अन्विच्छन्ती महच्छ्रेयो गान्धारी वाक्यमब्रवीत्
Hearing her husband's words, Gandhari, the illustrious princess, seeking great welfare, spoke these words.
आनायय सुतं क्षिप्रं राज्यकामुकमातुरम् । नहि राज्यमशिष्टेन शक्यं धर्मार्थलोपिना । आप्तुमाप्तं तथाऽपीदमविनीतेन सर्वथा
Bring your son here quickly, who is eager for the kingdom and distressed; for a kingdom cannot be attained or kept by one who is rude and violates dharma and wealth, nor by one who is utterly undisciplined.
