Having gone to the king, Satyavikrama, he spoke: 'This maiden will bear you two royal sons.'
'Through her, you will obtain your desire, both here and hereafter; after begetting two sons, radiant like the moon and sun, O king.'
'As bride-price, O knower of all dharma, four hundred horses with one black ear, shining like the moon, must be given to me.'
'This undertaking is for my teacher; I have no use for the horses myself. If it is possible, O great king, let it be done without hesitation.'
'You are childless, O royal sage; beget two sons, O king. By the raft of sons, rescue your ancestors and yourself.'
'For a royal sage who enjoys the fruit of sons does not fall from heaven, nor does he go to the dreadful hell where the childless depart.'
Having heard this and other various words spoken by Galava, Ushinara, the lord of men, gave him a reply.
'I have heard your words, Galava, just as you say. But fate is powerful, O Brahman; my mind inclines toward it.'
O best of Brahmins, I have two hundred such horses, and besides these, I possess many thousands of others.
I too will beget only one child on her, O Galava, and then, like others who have fulfilled their purpose, I will depart.
O best of Brahmins, I would give you the equivalent value, but my wealth is for the people of the city and the country, not for my personal enjoyment.
For a king who gives away wealth belonging to others out of desire, neither attains righteousness nor fame among the virtuous.
Therefore, I will accept her; let her be given to me by you. Let this maiden, radiant as one born of the gods, bear me a single son.
Thus, when the king had spoken about the maiden in many ways, the best of Brahmins, Galava, honored Uśīnara.
Having accepted Uśīnara, Galava went to the forest. Having obtained her, he rejoiced as one who has gained fortune through merit.
In the caves of mountains, at the springs of rivers, in splendid gardens, in forests and groves,
In delightful mansions, on the tops of palaces, in aerial pavilions with windows, and in inner chambers,
Then, at the proper time during a sacrifice, a son was born to him, radiant as the cry of a child, who became renowned as Śibi, the best of kings.
The Brahmin Galava, having approached and received him, took the maiden and departed, O king, and saw the son of Vinatā.
Then Garuda, smiling, said to Galava: 'By good fortune, I see you here, O Brahmin, your purpose accomplished.'
Hearing the words spoken by Garuda, Galava explained to him that a fourth part of the task still remained.
But Suparṇa, best among speakers, said to Galava: 'You need not make any further effort; this will not succeed for you.'
For formerly, at Kānyakubja, when Gādhi sought a wife, he asked for Satyavatī, and Ṛcīka was told this:
'O Galava, let a thousand horses with black ears and moon-like radiance be given to me, O blessed one.'
Ṛcīka, agreeing to this, went to the abode of Varuṇa; obtaining horses at the horse-sacrifice ford, he gave them to the king.
Having performed a sacrifice with a golden lotus, the king gave them to the Brahmins; and when those kings had received them, two hundred were purchased from each.
O best of twice-born, another four hundred were also taken away from nearby, while being transported across.
Thus, Gālava, what cannot be attained can never be attained; offer these two hundred horses to him.
To Viśvāmitra, the righteous soul, together with six hundred horses, you will then be free from confusion and your task accomplished, O foremost of Brahmins.
Gālava, having replied 'so be it,' then, together with Suparṇa, took the horses and the maiden and approached Viśvāmitra.
