पुत्रं ययातेः प्रबूहि पूरुं धर्मभृतां वरम्। आनुपूर्व्येण ये चान्ये पूरोर्वंशविवर्धनाः
Tell me of Yayati’s son Puru, foremost among the righteous, and also, in order, of the others who increased Puru’s lineage.
विस्तरेण पुनर्ब्रूहि दौष्यन्तेर्जनमेजयात्। संबभूव यथा राजा भरतो द्विजसत्तम
Describe in detail again, O best of twice-born, how from Janamejaya, son of Dushyanta, the king Bharata was born.
पूरुर्नृपतिशार्दूलो यथैवास्य पिता नृप। धर्मनित्यः स्थितो राज्ये शक्रतुल्यपराक्रमः
Puru, the tiger among kings, was just like his father, ever devoted to righteousness, established in his kingdom, and equal to Indra in valor.
प्रवीरेश्वररौद्राश्वास्त्रयः पुत्रा महारथाः। पूरोः पौष्ट्यामजायन्त प्रवीरो वंशकृत्ततः
From Puru were born three mighty sons—Pravira, Ishvara, and Raudrashva—great chariot-warriors, through his queen Paushtya; Pravira became the founder of the line.
मनस्युरभवत्तस्माच्छूरसेनीसुतः प्रभुः। पृथिव्याश्चतुरन्ताया गोप्ता राजीवलोचनः
From him was born Manasyu, the powerful son of Shuraseni, lotus-eyed protector of the earth bounded on all sides.
शक्तः संहननो वाग्मी सौवीरीतनयास्त्रयः। मनस्योरभवन्पुत्राः शूराः सर्वे महारथाः
Shakta, Samhanana, and Vāgmī—three sons of Manasyu by the daughter of the Sauvira king—were all heroic and great chariot-warriors.
अन्वग्भानुप्रभृतयो मिश्रकेश्यां मनस्विनः। रौद्राश्वस्य महेष्वासा दशाप्सरसि सूनवः
Raudrashva had ten intelligent sons by the Apsaras Misrakeshi, beginning with Anvagbhanu, all great archers.
यज्वानो जज्ञिरे शूराः प्रजावन्तो बहुश्रुताः। सर्वे सर्वास्त्रविद्वासः सर्वे धर्मपरायणाः
All were sacrificers, heroic, prolific, learned in many branches, skilled in all weapons, and devoted to righteousness.
ऋचेयुरथ कक्षेयुः कृकणेयुश्च वीर्यवान्। स्थण्डिलेयुर्वनेयुश्च जलेयुश्च महायशाः
Richeyu, Kakshiyu, Krikaneyu the mighty, Sthandileyu, Vaneyu, and Jaleyu of great fame,
तेजेयुर्बलावान्धीमान्सत्येयुश्चन्द्रविक्रमः। धर्मेयुः सन्नतेयुश्च दशमो देवविक्रमः
Tejeyu, strong and wise; Satyeyu, of moon-like valor; Dharmeyu, Sannateyu, and the tenth, Devavikrama.
अनाधृष्टिरभूत्तेषां विद्वान्भुवि तथैकराट्। ऋचेयुरथ विक्रान्तो देवानामिव वासवः
Among them, Anadhṛṣṭi was learned and became sole ruler on earth; Richeyu was valiant like Indra among the gods.
अनाधृष्टिसुतस्त्वासीद्राजसूयाश्वमेधकृत्। मतिनार इति ख्यातो राजा परमधार्मिकः
Anadhṛṣṭi’s son was the king Matinara, renowned for performing the Rajasuya and Ashvamedha sacrifices, and supreme in righteousness.
मतिनारसुता राजंश्चत्वारोऽमितविक्रमाः। तंसुर्महानतिरथो द्रुह्युश्चाप्रतिमद्युतिः
O King, Matinara had four sons of immeasurable valor: Tamsu, Mahānati, Ratho, and Druhyu of unrivaled splendor.
तेषां तंसुर्महावीर्यः पौरवं वंशमुद्वहन्। आजहार यशो दीप्तं जिगाय च वसुंधराम्
Of them, Tamsu, of great might, upheld the Paurava line, won brilliant fame, and conquered the earth.
ईलिनं तु सुतं तंसुर्जनयामास वीर्यवान्। सोऽपि कृत्स्नामिमां भूमिं विजिग्ये जयतां वरः
Tamsu, the mighty, begot a son Ilina, who, best among conquerors, subdued the whole earth.
रथन्तर्यां सुतान्पञ्च पञ्चभूतोपमांस्ततः। ईलिनो जनयामास दुष्यन्तप्रभृतीन्नृपान्
Ilina begot five sons, equal to the five elements, upon Rathantara: Dushyanta and other kings.
दुष्यन्तं शूरभीमौ च प्रवसुं वसुमेव च। तेषां श्रेष्ठोऽभवद्राजा दुष्यन्तो दुर्जयो युधि
Dushyanta, Shurabhima, Pravasu, and Vasuman—among them, Dushyanta became the greatest king, invincible in battle.
दुष्यन्ताल्लक्षणायां तु जज्ञे वै जनमेजयः। शकुन्तलायां भरतो दौष्यन्तिरभवत्सुतः
From Dushyanta and Lakshana was born Janamejaya; from Shakuntala, Bharata, son of Dushyanta, was born.
तस्माद्भरतवंशस्य विप्रतस्थे महद्यशः
Therefore, the great fame of the Bharata lineage spread far and wide.
भगवन्विस्तरेणेह भरतस्य महात्मनः। जन्म कर्म च सुश्रूषोस्तन्मे शंसितुमर्हसि
O venerable one, I wish to hear in detail about the birth and deeds of the great-souled Bharata, as well as of Suśrūṣa; please recount these to me.
पौरवाणां वंशकरो दुष्यन्तो नाम वीर्यवान्। पृथिव्याश्चतुरन्ताया गोप्ता भरतसत्तम
Among the Pauravas, there was a mighty one named Duṣyanta, the protector of the earth with its four quarters, O best of the Bharatas.
चतुर्भागं भुवः कृत्स्नं यो भुङ्क्ते मनुजेश्वरः। समुद्रावरणांश्चापि देशान्स समितिंजयः
This lord of men enjoyed a fourth part of the entire earth, and also those lands surrounded by the ocean, O conqueror in battle.
आम्लेच्छावधिकान्सर्वान्स भुङ्क्ते रिपुमर्दनः। रत्नाकरसमुद्रान्तांश्चातुर्वर्ण्यजनावृतान्
He ruled over all lands up to the borders of the Mlecchas, subduing his enemies, and over territories extending to the ocean, inhabited by people of the four varṇas.
न वर्णसङ्करकरो न कृष्याकरकृज्जनः। न पापकृत्कश्चिदासीत्तस्मिन्राजनि शासति
Under his rule, there was no mixing of castes, no one neglected agriculture, and no one committed evil deeds.
धर्मे रतिं सेवमाना धर्मार्थावभिपेदिरे। तदा नरा नरव्याघ्र तस्मिञ्जनपदेश्वरे
People delighted in righteousness and, devoted to duty, attained both virtue and wealth, O tiger among men, in that realm under his rule.
नासीच्चोरभयं तात न क्षुधाभयमण्वपि। नासीद्व्याधिभयं चापि तस्मिञ्जनपदेश्वरे
There was no fear of thieves, O dear one, nor even the slightest fear of hunger; nor was there any fear of disease in that realm under his rule.
स्वधर्मै रेमिरे वर्णा दैवे कर्मणि निःस्पृहाः। तमाश्रित्य महीपालमासंश्चैवाकुतोभयाः
The classes rejoiced in their own duties, unattached in their actions ordained by fate; and, taking refuge in that great king, they lived without fear from any quarter.
कालवर्षी च पर्जन्यः सस्यानि रसवन्ति च। सर्वरत्नसमृद्धा च मही पशुमती तथा
The clouds rained in due season, the crops were full of flavor, the earth was abundant in all gems, and rich in cattle as well.
स्वकर्मनिरता विप्रा नानृतं तेषु विद्यते। स चाद्भुतमहावीर्यो वज्रसंहननो युवा
The brahmins were devoted to their own duties; among them there was no falsehood. And he himself was of wondrous and great might, youthful, with a body hard as a thunderbolt.
उद्यम्य मन्दरं दोर्भ्यां वहेत्सवनकाननम्। चतुष्पथगदायुद्धे सर्वप्रहरणेषु च
He could lift Mount Mandara with his arms and carry it through forests and groves; in battle at the crossroads, he was skilled with every weapon.
