स तस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा ब्राह्मणः शंसितव्रतः ।' प्रतिगृह्य च तां कन्यां गालवः सह पक्षिणा। पुनर्द्रक्ष्याव इत्युक्त्वा प्रतस्थे सह कन्यया
Hearing his words, the Brahmin of firm vows, Galava, accepted the maiden with the bird, saying, 'We shall return again,' and departed with her.
उपलब्धमिदं द्वारमश्वानामिति चाण्डजः। उक्त्वा गालवमापृच्छ्य जगाम भवनं स्वकम्
Having found this means to obtain the horses, the son of Vinata, taking leave of Galava, returned to his own abode.
गते पतगराजे तु गालवः सह कन्यया। चिन्तयानः क्षमंदाने राजानं शुल्कतोऽगमत्
When the king of the birds had departed, Gālava, together with the maiden, went to a king who was able to give the dowry, pondering over the matter.
सोऽगच्छन्मनसेक्ष्वाकुं हर्यश्वं राजसत्तमम्। अयोध्यायां महावीर्यं चतुरङ्गबलान्वितम्
As he went, he thought of Ikṣvāku's descendant Haryaśva, the foremost among kings, of great might, possessing a fourfold army, in Ayodhyā.
कोशधान्यबलोपेतं प्रियपौरं द्विजप्रियम् । प्रजाभिकामं शाम्यन्तं कुर्वाणं तप उत्तमम्
He was endowed with wealth, grain, and strength, beloved by his citizens, dear to the twice-born, desirous of offspring, tranquil, and engaged in supreme austerity.
तमुपागम्य विप्रः स हर्यश्वं गालवोऽब्रवीत् । कन्येयं मम राजेन्द्र प्रसवैः कुलवर्धिनी
Approaching Haryaśva, the king, the brāhmaṇa Gālava spoke: 'This maiden of mine, O king, will increase your lineage through sons.'
इयं शुल्केन भार्यार्थं हर्यश्व प्रतिगृह्यताम् । शुल्कं ते कीर्तियिष्यामि तच्छ्रुत्वा संप्रधार्यताम्
'Let this maiden, Haryaśva, be accepted by you as a wife for a bride-price; I will proclaim your gift as fame—having heard this, consider it well.'
महावीर्यो महीपालः काशीनामीश्वरः प्रभुः। दिवोदास इति ख्यातो भैमसेनिर्नराधिपः
A mighty king, lord of Kāśī, renowned as Divodāsa, the Bhaimaseni ruler of men, possessed great power.
तत्र गच्छावहे भद्रे शनैरागच्छ मा शुचः । धार्मिकः संयमे युक्तः सत्ये चैव जनेश्वरः
'Let us go there, O blessed one; come slowly, do not grieve. He is righteous, disciplined, and a lord of people devoted to truth.'
तमुपागम्य स मुनिर्न्यायतस्तेन सत्कृतः। गालवः प्रसवस्यार्थे तं नृपं प्रत्यचोदयत्
Having approached him, the sage was duly honored by him; Gālava urged that king for the sake of offspring.
श्रुतमेतन्मया पूर्वं किमुक्त्वा विस्तरं द्विज। काङ्क्षितो हि मयैषोऽर्थः श्रुत्वैव द्विजसत्तम
'I have heard this before, O brāhmaṇa, why speak at length? This matter is desired by me, O best of brāhmaṇas, as soon as I heard it.'
एतच्च मे बहुमतं यदुत्सृज्य नराधिपान्। मामेवमुपयातोऽसि भावि चैतदसंशयम्
'And this is greatly valued by me, that, leaving other kings aside, you have come to me in this way; this will surely come to pass.'
स एव विभवोऽसमाकमश्वानामपि गालव। अहमप्येकमेवास्यां जनयिष्यामि पार्थिवम्
'That same wealth is not now with me, O Gālava, not even for horses; but I too will beget a single son on her, O king.'
तथेत्युक्त्वा द्विजश्रेष्ठः प्रादात्कन्यां महीपतेः। विधिपूर्वां च तां राजा कन्यां प्रतिगृहीतवान्
Having said 'So be it,' the best of brāhmaṇas gave the maiden to the king; and the king accepted her according to proper rites.
रेमे स तस्यां राजर्षिः प्रभावत्यां यथा रविः। स्वाहायां च यथा वह्निर्यथा शाच्यां च वासवः
That royal sage enjoyed her, Prabhāvatī, as the sun with Prabhā, as fire with Svāhā, and as Indra with Śacī.
यथा चन्द्रश्च रोहिण्यां यथा धूमोर्णया यमः। वरुणश्च यथा गौर्यां यथा चर्ध्यां धनेश्वरः
As the moon with Rohiṇī, as Yama with Dhūmorṇā, as Varuṇa with Gaurī, and as Kubera with Ṛddhi.
यथा नारायणो लक्ष्म्यां जाह्नव्यां च यथोदधिः । यथा रुद्रश्च रुद्राण्यां यथा वेद्यां पितामहः
As Nārāyaṇa with Lakṣmī, as the ocean with Jāhnavī, as Rudra with Rudrāṇī, and as the Grandfather with Vedyā.
अदृश्यन्त्यां च वासिष्ठो वसिष्ठश्चाक्षमालया। च्यवनश्च सुकन्यायां पुलस्त्यः सन्ध्यया यथा
As Vasiṣṭha with Adṛśyantī, as Vasiṣṭha with Akṣamālā, as Cyavana with Sukanyā, and as Pulastya with Sandhyā.
अगस्त्यश्चापि वैदर्भ्यां सावित्र्यां सत्यवान्यथा। यथा भृगुः पुलोमायामदित्यां कश्यपो यथा
As Agastya with the princess of Vidarbha, as Satyavān with Sāvitri, as Bhṛgu with Pulomā, and as Kaśyapa with Aditi.
रेणुकायां यथार्चीको हैमवत्यां च कौशिकः। बृहस्पतिश्च तारायां शुक्रश्च शतपर्वणा
As Rcīka with Reṇukā, as Kauśika with Haimavatī, as Bṛhaspati with Tārā, and as Śukra with Śataparvanā.
यथा भूम्यां भूमिपतिरुर्वश्यां च पुरूरवाः। ऋचीकः सत्यवत्यां च सरस्वस्यां यथा मनुः
As the lord of the earth upon the earth, Pururavas with Urvashi, Richika with Satyavati, and Manu with Sarasvati.
शकुन्तलायां दुष्यन्तो धृत्यां धर्मश्च शाश्वतः। दमयन्त्यां नलश्चैव सत्यवत्यां च नारदः
Dushyanta with Shakuntala, the eternal Dharma with Dhriti, Nala with Damayanti, and Narada with Satyavati.
जरत्कारुर्जरत्कार्वां पुलस्त्यश्च प्रतीच्यया। मेनकायां यथोर्णायुस्तुम्बुरुश्चैव रम्भया
Jaratkaru with Jaratkarvi, Pulastya with Pratichi, Urnayu with Menaka, and Tumburu with Rambha.
वासुकिः शतशीर्षायां कुमार्यां च धनञ्जयः। वैदेह्यां च यथा रामो रुक्मिण्यां च जनार्दनः
Vasuki with Shatashirsha, Dhananjaya with Kumari, Rama with Vaidehi, and Janardana with Rukmini.
तथा तु रममाणस्य दिवोदासस्य भूपतेः । माधवी जनयामास पुत्रमेकं प्रतर्दनम्
In the same way, Madhavi, enjoying herself with King Divodasa, gave birth to a single son, Pratardana.
अथाजगाम भगवान्दिवोदासं स गालवः । समये समनुप्राप्ते वचनं चेदमब्रवीत्
Then the venerable Galava approached Divodasa, O king, when the appointed time had arrived, and spoke these words.
निर्यातयतु मे कन्यां भवांस्तिष्ठन्तु वाजिनः । यावदन्यत्र गच्छामि शुल्कार्थं पृथिवीपते
Let the king give me the maiden, and let the horses remain; until I go elsewhere, O lord of the earth, to seek the bride-price.
दिवोदासोऽथ धर्मात्मा समये गालवस्य ताम्। कान्यां निर्यातयामास स्थितः सत्ये महीपतिः
Then Divodasa, righteous in soul, at the appointed time, gave Galava the maiden, steadfast in truth, O king.
तथैव तां श्रियं त्यक्त्वा कन्या भूत्वा यशस्विनी । माधवी गालवं विप्रमभ्ययात्सत्यसङ्गरा
In the same way, renouncing her prosperity and becoming a maiden, the illustrious Madhavi, steadfast in her vow, approached Galava the sage.
गालवो विमृशन्नेव स्वकार्यगतमानसः । जगाम भोजनगरं द्रष्टुमौशीनरं नृपम्
Galava, reflecting and intent upon his purpose, went to Bhojanagara to see King Ushinara.
