यस्मादुत्तार्यते पापाद्यस्मान्निश्रेयसोऽश्रुते । अस्मादुत्तारणबलादुत्तरेत्युच्यते द्विज ।। 1
Because one is carried across from sin, and from what is not heard of as supreme good, by the power of crossing over, this is called 'uttara,' O twice-born.
उत्तरस्य हिरण्यस्य परिवापस्य गालव । मार्गः पश्चिमपूर्वाभ्यां दिग्भ्यां वै मध्यमः स्मृतः
North of the golden, enclosing region, O Gālava, the path is considered the middle one between the western and eastern directions.
अस्यां दिशि वरिष्ठायामुत्तरायां द्विजर्षभ । नासौम्यो नाविधेयात्मा नाधर्मो वसते जनः
In this most excellent northern direction, O best of twice-born, no unkind, undisciplined, or unrighteous person dwells.
अत्र नारायणः कृष्णो जिष्णुश्चैव नरोत्तमः । बदर्यामाश्रमपदे तथा ब्रह्मा च शाश्वतः
Here, Nārāyaṇa, Kṛṣṇa, and the victorious best of men dwell in the hermitage at Badarī, as does the eternal Brahmā.
अत्र वै हिमवत्पृष्ठे नित्यमास्ते महेश्वरः। `प्रकृत्या पुरुषः सार्धं युगान्ताग्निसमप्रभः
Here, upon the summit of the Himalayas, Maheshvara always resides, shining like the fire at the end of an age, together with Prakriti and Purusha.
न स दृश्यो मुनिगणैस्तथा देवैः सवासवैः । गन्धर्वयक्षसिद्धैर्वा नरनारायणादृते
He is not visible to assemblies of sages, nor to the gods with Indra, nor to Gandharvas, Yakshas, or Siddhas, except for Nara and Narayana.
अत्र विष्णुः सहस्राक्षः सहस्रचरणोऽव्ययः । सहस्रशिरसः श्रीमानेकः पश्यति मायया
Here, Vishnu, the thousand-eyed, thousand-footed, imperishable one, the glorious lord with a thousand heads, perceives all through his power of illusion.
अत्र राज्येन विप्राणां चन्द्रमाश्चाभ्यषिच्यत । अत्र गङ्गां महादेवः पतन्तीं गगनाच्च्युताम्
Here, the moon was anointed as king of the Brahmins; here, Mahadeva received the Ganga, falling from the sky.
प्रतिगृह्य ददौ लोके मानुषे ब्रह्मवित्तम । अत्र देव्या तपस्तप्तं महेश्वरपरीप्सया
Having accepted her, he bestowed her upon the world of men, O best knower of Brahman; here, the goddess performed austerities desiring Maheshvara.
अत्र कामश्च रोषश्च शैलश्चोमा च संबभुः । अत्र राक्षसयक्षाणां गन्धर्वाणां च गालव
Here, desire, anger, the mountain, and Uma were born; here, among the Rakshasas, Yakshas, and Gandharvas, O Galava,
आधिपत्येन कैलासे धनदोऽप्यभिषेचितः। अत्र चैत्ररथं रम्यमत्र वैखानसाश्रमः
Kubera was consecrated as lord of Kailasa; here is the delightful Chaitraratha, and here is the hermitage of the Vaikhanasas.
अत्र मन्दाकिनी चैव मन्दरश्च द्विजर्षभ । अत्र सौगन्धिकवनं नैर्ऋतैरभिरक्ष्यते
Here are the Mandakini river and the Mandara mountain, O best of twice-born; here, the Saugandhika forest is guarded by the spirits of the southwest.
शाद्वलं कदलीस्कन्धमत्र सन्तानका नगाः। अत्र संयमनित्यानां सिद्धानां स्वैरचारिणाम्
Here are green meadows, banana trunks, and the Santanaka trees; here dwell the Siddhas who roam freely, always engaged in restraint.
विमानान्युनुरूपाणि कामभोग्यानि गालव । अत्र ते ऋषयः सप्त देवी चारुन्धती तथा
Here, O Galava, are splendid aerial chariots, suited for enjoyment; here, the seven sages reside, and the goddess Arundhati as well.
अत्र तिष्ठति वै रात्रिन्दिवाप्यत्रावतिष्ठते। अत्र यज्ञं समासाद्य ध्रुवं स्थाता पितामहः
Here, night and day abide; here, having attained the sacrifice, the grandsire remains steadfast.
ज्योतींषि चन्द्रसूर्यौ च परिवर्तन्ति नित्यशः । अत्र गङ्गामहाद्वारं रक्षन्ति द्विजसत्तम
Here, the moon and sun, and the stars, revolve eternally; here, O best of Brahmins, the great gateway of the Ganga is guarded.
धामा नाम महात्मानो मुनयः सत्यवादिनः । न तेषां ज्ञायते मूर्तिर्नाकृतिर्न तपश्चितम्
Here, dwell the great-souled sages called Dhama, speakers of truth; their form, appearance, and austerities are unknown.
परिवर्तसहस्रामि कामभोज्याननि गालव । यथायथा प्रविशति तस्मात्परतरं नरः
Here are thousands of delightful places for enjoyment, O Galava; as a man enters each, he proceeds to a higher state.
तथातथा द्विजश्रेष्ठ प्रविलीयति गालव । नैतत्केनचिदन्येन गतपूर्वं द्विजर्षभ
In the same way, O best of Brahmins, he dissolves further and further, O Galava; none other has ever gone here before, O foremost of twice-born.
ऋते नारायणं देवं नरं वा जिष्णुमव्ययम् । अत्र कैलासमित्युक्तं स्थानमैलविलस्य तत्
Except for the god Narayana or the imperishable Nara, none can reach this place; this is called Kailasa, the abode of Ilavila's son.
अत्र विद्युत्प्रभा नाम जझिरेऽप्सरसो दश। अत्र विष्णुपदं नाम क्रमता विष्णुना कृतम्
Here, ten Apsaras named Vidyutprabha were born; here, the place called Vishnu's Footstep was made by Vishnu as he strode.
त्रिलोकविक्रमे ब्रह्मन्नुत्तरां दिशमाश्रितम् । अत्र राज्ञा मरुतेन यज्ञेनेष्टं द्विजोत्तम
In his stride across the three worlds, O Brahman, he reached the northern direction; here, O best of Brahmins, King Maruta performed sacrifice.
उशीरबीजे विप्रर्षे यत्र जाम्बूनदं सरः। जीमूतस्यात्र विप्रर्षेरुपतस्थे महात्मनः
O sage, at the source of the Ushira grass, where lies the lake of Jambunada, there the great-souled sage Jimuta stood.
साक्षाद्धैमवतः पुण्यो विमलः कनकाकरः । ब्राह्मणेषु च यत्कृत्स्नं स्वन्तं कृत्वा धनं महत्
That sacred, pure, golden-hued place belongs directly to Himavat; and all the great wealth there, having made it his own among the Brahmanas—
वव्रे धनं महर्षिः स जैमूतं तद्धनं ततः। अत्र नित्यं दिशांपालाः सायंप्रातर्द्विजर्षभ
The great sage chose that wealth, the wealth of Jimuta; and there, O best of twice-born, the guardians of the directions always gather, evening and morning.
कस्य कार्यं किमिति वै परिक्रोशान्ति गालव । एवमेषा द्विजश्रेष्ठ गुणैरन्यैर्दिगुत्तरा
They call out, 'Whose task is this? What is to be done?' O Galava; in this way, O best of Brahmanas, this direction surpasses the others in virtues.
उत्तरेति परिख्याता सर्वकर्मस्तु चोत्तरा । एता विस्तरशस्तात तव शङ्गीर्तिता दिशः
It is known as the 'Uttara' (northern), and in all actions it is indeed superior; thus, dear one, I have described these directions to you in detail.
चतस्रः क्रमयोगेन कामाशां गन्तुमिच्छसि। उद्यतोऽहं द्विजश्रेष्ठ तव दर्शयितुं दिशः। पृथिवीं चाखिलां ब्रह्मंस्तस्मादारोह मां द्विज
You wish to visit the four directions in order, desiring their fulfillment; I am ready, O best of Brahmanas, to show you the directions and the entire earth—therefore, ascend upon me, O Brahmana.
गरुत्मन्भुजगेन्द्रारे सुपर्ण विनतात्मज । नय मां तार्क्ष्य पूर्वेण यत्र धर्मस्य चक्षुषी
O Garuda, enemy of serpent kings, Suparna, son of Vinata, carry me, O Tarkshya, to the east, where the eyes of Dharma are found.
पूर्वमेतां दिशं गच्छ या पूर्वं परिकीर्तिता । देवतानां हि सान्निध्यमत्र कीर्तितवानसि
Go to this eastern direction, the one previously described; for you have declared that the presence of the gods is here.
