'This serpent, together with me and Nārada, should go and see Vāsava, the lord of the three worlds and king of the gods.'
'I myself will act as Śeṣa in this matter, master of wisdom and life; and I will strive, O noble one, to thwart Suparṇa.'
Let Sumukha go with me to the lord of the gods, for the purpose of accomplishing our task. Farewell to you, O serpent.
Permitted by Aryaka, they departed, O Bharata. Then, taking Sumukha, all those of great might saw Indra, the king of the gods, seated, radiant with great splendor.
There, the blessed Vishnu was present, four-armed. Then Narada related everything to Matali.
Then Vishnu spoke to Purandara, lord of the worlds: 'Let nectar be given to him; let him be made equal to the immortals.'
Let Matali, Narada, and Sumukha, O Vasava, obtain from you whatever they desire, as they wish.
Purandara, reflecting on the prowess of Garuda, said to Vishnu: 'Let you yourself give it to him.'
You are the lord of all worlds, both moving and unmoving. What you have given or not given, who else, O mighty one, is able to accomplish?
Then Shakra gave to that serpent the highest span of life, but the slayer of Vritra did not make him partake of nectar.
Having received the boon, Sumukha became Sumukha indeed. He took a wife as he wished and went to his home.
Narada and Aryaka, their task accomplished and filled with joy, after honoring the radiant king of the gods, departed.
There, mighty Garuda heard what had happened: that Indra had granted life to the serpent, O Bharata.
With a great wind from his wings, the bird blocked the three worlds. Suparna, extremely angry, rushed toward Vasava.
O lord, is it out of disrespect that my livelihood is obstructed? Having granted a boon of fulfilling desires, you have again withdrawn.
By the nature of all beings, and by the lord of all creatures, my food has been ordained by the Creator. Why do you restrain it?
This great serpent has been chosen, and an agreement has been established for me. By this, O god, I must sustain a great progeny.
In this situation, I am not able to harm anyone else. You play as you wish, O king of the gods, according to your desire.
Therefore, I will give up my life, and so will my household. All my servants in my house—be pleased, O Vasava.
Hearing Suparna's words, Sumukha and Durmukha then, abandoning their forms and becoming pale, assumed the form of serpents. Going to Vishnu's presence, they embraced his footstool.
O son of Vinatā, this was not done by me, nor should you be angry with me; that gracious one was granted safety by the mighty Viṣṇu. Hearing what was said by Purandara, the son of Vinatā spoke.
This too I deserve, O slayer of Vṛtra, and more; though I am lord of the three worlds, I have come to serve another.
As long as you, lord of the gods, remain, Viṣṇu is not the cause for me; for the eternal sovereignty of the three worlds, O Vāsava, rests with you.
My mother is also Dakṣa's daughter, and Kaśyapa is my father; I too am able to bear all the worlds on every side with my strength.
My great strength, unbearable to all beings, is vast; I too have performed great deeds in battles with the Daityas.
Śrutaśrī, Śrutasena, Vivasvān, Rocanāmukha, Prasruta, and Kālakākṣa—these Daityas too were slain by me.
Because I stand on your banner and serve you with effort, and also carry your younger brother, you look down on me for that.
Who else is able to bear such a burden, or who is stronger than I? Though I am distinguished, I carry him along with his kin.
But because you, disregarding me, have deprived me of food, my honor has been lost, both from you and from myself, O Vāsava.
Among those born of Aditi, who are strong and mighty, you are said to be the strongest of them all.
