कर्मणा क्षत्रियाश्चैते निर्घृणा भोगिभोजिनः । ज्ञातिसङ्क्षयकर्तृत्वाद्ब्राह्मण्यं न लभन्ति वैः
These Kshatriyas, ruthless and indulging in pleasures, do not attain Brahminhood because they cause the destruction of their own kin.
नामानि चैषां वक्ष्यामि यथाप्राधान्यतः श्रृणु । मातले श्लाघ्यमेतद्धि कुलं विष्णुपरिग्रहम्
I will tell you their names in order of prominence; listen, Matali. This lineage is praiseworthy, for it is associated with Vishnu.
दैवतं विष्णुरेतेषां विष्णुरेव परायणम् । हृदि चैषां सदा विष्णुर्विष्णुरेव सदा गतिः
Vishnu is their deity; Vishnu alone is their ultimate refuge. In their hearts always resides Vishnu, and Vishnu is ever their goal.
सुवर्णचूडो नागाशी दारुणश्चण्डतुण्डकः । अनिलश्चानलश्चैव विशालाक्षोऽथ कुण्डली
Suvarnachuda, Nagashi, Daruna, Chandatundaka, Anila, Anala, Vishalaksha, and Kundali,
पङ्कजिद्वज्रविष्कम्भो वैनतेयोऽथ वामनः । वातवेगो दिशाचक्षुर्निमेषोऽनिमिषस्तथा
Pankaji, Vajravishkambha, Vainateya, Vamana, Vatavega, Dishachakshus, Nimesha, and Animisha,
त्रिरावः सप्तरावश्च वाल्मीकिर्दीपकस्तथा । दैत्यद्वीपः सरिद्द्वीपः सारसः पद्मकेतनः
Trirava, Saptarava, Valmiki, Dipaka, Daityadvipa, Sariddvipa, Sarasa, and Padmaketana,
सुमुखश्चित्रकेतुश्च चित्रबर्हस्तथाऽनघः। मेषहृत्कुमुदो दक्षः सर्पान्तः सोमभोजनः
Sumukha, Citraketu, Citrabarha, Anagha, Meshahrit, Kumuda, Daksha, Sarpanta, and Somabhojana,
गुरुभारः कपोतश्च सूर्यनेत्रश्चिरान्तकः । विष्णुधर्मा कुमारश्च परिबर्हो हरिस्तथा
Gurubhara, Kapota, Suryanetra, Cirantaka, Vishnudharma, Kumara, Paribarha, and Hari,
सुस्वरो मधुपर्कश्च हेमवर्णस्तथैव च। मालयो मातरिश्वा च निशाकरदिवाकरौ
Susvara, Madhuparka, Hemavarna, Malaya, Matarishva, Nishakara, and Divakara,
एते प्रदेशमात्रेण मयोक्ता गरुडात्मजाः । प्राधान्यतस्ते यशसा कीर्तिताः प्राणिनश्चये
These sons of Garuda have been named by me according to their regions; they are mentioned here in order of their fame among living beings.
यद्यत्र न रुचिः काचिदेहि गच्छाव मातले । तं नयिष्यामि देशं त्वां वरं यत्रोपलप्स्यसे
If you do not find any place pleasing, Matali, let us go; I will take you to a land where you will obtain your desired boon.
इदं रसातलं नाम सप्तमं पृथिवीतलम्। यत्रास्ते सुरभिर्माता गवाममृतसंभवा
This is called Rasatala, the seventh layer of the earth, where Surabhi, the mother of cows born from nectar, resides.
क्षरन्ती सततं क्षीरं पृथिवीसारसंभवम् । षण्णं रसानां सारेण रसमेकमनुत्तमम्
She constantly pours forth milk, originating from the essence of the earth; with the essence of the six tastes, she produces a single, supreme flavor.
अमृतेनाभितृप्तस्य सारमुद्गिरतः पुरा। पितामहस्य वदनादुदतिष्ठदनिन्दिता
Long ago, when Pitamaha was fully satisfied by nectar, its essence flowed from his mouth, and she arose, faultless.
यस्याः क्षीरस्य धाराया निपतन्त्या महीतले। ह्रदः कृतः क्षीरनिधिः पवित्रं परमुच्यते
From the stream of her milk falling upon the earth, a lake was formed, a reservoir of milk, which is called supremely pure.
पुष्पितस्येव फेनेन पर्यन्तमनुवेष्टितम्। पिबन्तो निवसन्त्यत्र फेनपा मुनिसत्तमाः
Its edges are surrounded by foam, as if blossoming; the best of sages dwell here, drinking and living on the foam.
फेनपा नाम ते ख्याताः फेनाहाराश्च मातले। उग्रे तपसि वर्तन्ते येषां बिभ्यति देवताः
They are known as the Phenapas, Matali, those who subsist on foam; they practice intense austerities, and even the gods fear them.
अस्याश्चतस्रो धेन्वोऽन्या दिक्षु सर्वासु मातले। निवसन्ति दिशां पाल्यो धारयन्त्योदिशःस्म ताः
There are four other cows of hers, Matali, dwelling in all directions; they guard the quarters and sustain the regions.
पूर्वां दिशं धारयते सुरूपा नाम सौरभी । दक्षिणां हंसिका कनाम धारयत्यपरां दिशम्
Surūpā, called Saurabhī, holds the eastern direction; Haṃsikā, named Kanāma, holds the southern direction.
पश्चिमा वारुणी दिक्च धार्यते वै सुभद्रया। महानुभावया नित्यं मातले विश्वरूपया
Subhadrā, of great power and always manifesting all forms, holds the western direction, O Mātali.
सर्वकामदुघा नाम धेनुर्धारयते दिशम्। उत्तरां मातले धर्म्यां तथैलविलसंश्रिताम्
The cow named Sarvakāmadughā holds the northern direction, O Mātali, which is righteous and adorned with oil.
आसां त पयसा मिश्रं पयो निर्मथ्य सागरे । मन्थानं मन्दरं कृत्वा देवैरसुरसंहितैः
From their milk, mixed together, milk was churned in the ocean, using Mandara as the churning rod, by the gods allied with the asuras.
अद्धृता वारुणी लक्ष्मीरमृतं चापि मातले। उच्चैःश्रवाश्चाश्वराजो मणिरत्नं च कौस्तुभम्
Vāruṇī, Lakṣmī, and nectar were obtained, O Mātali; Uccaiḥśravā, the king of horses, and the Kaustubha jewel were also produced.
सुधाहारेषु च सुधां स्वधाभोजिषु च स्वधाम्। अमृतं चामृताशेषु सुरभी क्षरते पयः
Among streams of nectar, nectar flows; among those who eat svadhā, svadhā flows; and among the immortal ones, Surabhī pours forth milk.
अत्र गाथा पुरा गीता रसातलनिवासिभिः । पौराणी श्रूयते लोके गीयते या मनीषिभिः
Here, a song was sung long ago by the dwellers of the netherworld; an ancient verse is heard in the world, sung by the wise.
न नागलोके न स्वर्गे न विमाने त्रिविष्टपे। परिवासः सुखस्तादृक् रसातलतले यथा
Neither in the world of nāgas, nor in heaven, nor in the celestial city Triviṣṭapa, is there such happiness of residence as in the netherworld.
इयं भोगवती नाम पुरी वासुकिपालिता। यादृशी देवराजस्य पुरी वर्याऽमरावती
This city is called Bhogavatī, guarded by Vāsuki; it is as splendid as Amarāvatī, the city of the king of gods.
एष शेषः स्थितो नागो येनेयं धार्यते सदा। तपसा लोकमुख्येन प्रभावसहिता मही
This is Śeṣa, the serpent, by whom this earth is always supported, endowed with power through asceticism, the foremost in the worlds.
श्वेताचलनिभाकारो दिव्याभरणभूषितः । सहस्रं धारयन्मूर्ध्नां ज्वालाजिह्वो महाबलः
He has the appearance of the white mountain, adorned with divine ornaments, bearing a thousand heads, with flaming tongues and immense strength.
इह नानाविधाकारा नानाविधविभूषणाः। सुरसायाः सुता नागा निवसन्ति गतव्यथाः
Here, the sons of Surasā, the nāgas, dwell free from sorrow, of various forms and adorned with various ornaments.
