असुराः कालखञ्जाश्च तथा वुष्णुपदोद्भवाः । नैर्ऋता यातुधानाश्च ब्रह्मपादोद्भवाश्च ये
Here dwell Asuras, the lame Kālakañjas, those born from Vishnu's feet, the Nairritas, Yatudhanas, and those born from Brahma's feet.
दंष्ट्रिणो भीमवेगाश्च वातवेगपराक्रमाः । मायावीर्योपसंपन्ना निवसन्त्यत्र मातले
Here, O Matali, dwell those with fangs, of terrible speed, whose power is like the wind, endowed with magical might.
निवातकवचा नाम दानवा युद्धदुर्मदाः । जानासि च यथा शक्रो नैताञ्शक्रोति बाधितुं
The Nivātakavacha are demons, fierce in battle; you know how Indra is unable to subdue them.
बहुशो मातले त्वं च तव पुत्रश्च गोमुखः । निर्भग्नो देवराजश्च सहपुत्रः शचीपतिः
Many times, O Mātali, you and your son Gomukha, along with the king of the gods and his son, have been defeated.
पश्य वेश्मानि रौक्माणि मातले राजतानि च । कर्मणा विधियुक्तेन युक्तान्युपगतानि च
Behold the golden and silver mansions, O Mātali, which have been attained through actions performed according to prescribed rites.
वैदूर्यमणिचित्राणि प्रवालरुचिराणि च । अर्कस्फटिकशुभ्राणि वज्रसारोञ्ज्वलानि च
They are adorned with variegated beryl gems, radiant coral, brilliant sun-crystals, and dazzling diamonds.
पार्थिवानीव चाभास्ति पद्मरागमयानि च। शैलानीव च दृश्यन्ते दारवाणीव चाप्युत
Some shine like earthly palaces, some are made of ruby, some appear like mountains, and some seem as if made of wood.
सूर्यरूपाणि चाभान्ति दीप्ताग्निसदृशानि च । मणिजालविचित्राणि प्रांशूनि निबिडानि च
Some gleam like the sun, others resemble blazing fire; they are tall, dense, and decorated with intricate networks of jewels.
नैतानि शक्यं निर्देष्टु रूपतो द्रव्यतस्तथा । गुणतश्चैव सिद्धानि प्रमाणगुणवन्ति च
These cannot be described either by form or by substance; they are perfected in qualities, possessing measure and excellence.
आक्रीडान्पश्य दैत्यानां तथैव शयनान्युत । रत्नवन्ति महार्हाणि भाजनान्यासनानि च
See the playgrounds of the demons, as well as their beds, vessels, and seats, all adorned with precious gems and of great value.
जलदाभांस्तथा शैलांस्तोयप्रस्रवणानि च । कामपुष्पफलांश्चापि पादपान्कापचारिणः
Behold the mountain-like clouds and streams of water, and the trees that bear desired flowers and fruits, moving according to wish.
मातले कश्चिदत्रापि रुचिरस्ते वरो भवेत् । अथवाऽन्यां दिशं भूमेर्गच्छाव यदि मन्यसे
O Mātali, if any of these delights appeal to you, choose one; otherwise, let us go to another region of the earth, if you wish.
मातलिस्त्वब्रवीदेनं भाषमाणं तथाविधम् । देवर्षे नैव मे कार्यं विप्रियं त्रिदिवौकसाम्
Mātali replied to him, who spoke thus: 'O divine sage, I have no desire to do anything displeasing to the dwellers of heaven.'
नित्यानुषक्तवैरा हि भ्रातरो देवदानवाः । परपक्षेण संबन्धं रोचयिष्याम्यहं कथम्
For the gods and demons are brothers, eternally bound in enmity; how could I wish to form an alliance with the opposing side?
अन्यत्र साधु गच्छाव द्रष्टुं नार्हामि दानवान् । जानामि तव चात्मानं हिंसात्मकमनं तथा
Let us go elsewhere; I should not see the demons. I know your nature is inclined toward violence.
अयं लोकः सुपर्णानां पक्षिणां पन्नगाशिनाम् । विक्रमे गमने भारे नैषामस्ति परिश्रमः
This world belongs to the Suparnas, the birds who feed on serpents; in their strength, movement, and burden, they never tire.
वैनतेयसुतैः सूत पङ्भिस्ततमिदं कुलम् । सुमुखेन सुनाम्ना च सुनेत्रेण सुवर्चसा
O charioteer, this lineage is filled with the sons of Vinatā, such as Sumukha, Sunāmnā, Sunetra, and Suvarcasa.
सुरुचा पक्षिराजेन सुबलेन च मातले। वर्धितानि प्रसृत्या वै विनाताकुलकर्तृभिः
By Surucā, the king of birds, and Subala, O Mātali, these have been increased in number by the creators of the Vinatā lineage.
पक्षिराजाभिजात्यानां सहस्राणि शतानि च। कश्यपस्य ततो वंशे जातैर्भूतिविवर्धनैः
Hundreds and thousands of those born in the noble line of the king of birds, descended from Kaśyapa, have grown in prosperity.
सर्वे ह्येते श्रिया युक्ताः सर्वे श्रीवत्सलक्षणाः । सर्वे श्रियमभीप्सन्तो धारयन्ति बलान्युत
All of these are endowed with splendor, all bear the mark of Śrīvatsa, all desire prosperity, and all possess strength.
कर्मणा क्षत्रियाश्चैते निर्घृणा भोगिभोजिनः । ज्ञातिसङ्क्षयकर्तृत्वाद्ब्राह्मण्यं न लभन्ति वैः
These Kshatriyas, ruthless and indulging in pleasures, do not attain Brahminhood because they cause the destruction of their own kin.
नामानि चैषां वक्ष्यामि यथाप्राधान्यतः श्रृणु । मातले श्लाघ्यमेतद्धि कुलं विष्णुपरिग्रहम्
I will tell you their names in order of prominence; listen, Matali. This lineage is praiseworthy, for it is associated with Vishnu.
दैवतं विष्णुरेतेषां विष्णुरेव परायणम् । हृदि चैषां सदा विष्णुर्विष्णुरेव सदा गतिः
Vishnu is their deity; Vishnu alone is their ultimate refuge. In their hearts always resides Vishnu, and Vishnu is ever their goal.
सुवर्णचूडो नागाशी दारुणश्चण्डतुण्डकः । अनिलश्चानलश्चैव विशालाक्षोऽथ कुण्डली
Suvarnachuda, Nagashi, Daruna, Chandatundaka, Anila, Anala, Vishalaksha, and Kundali,
पङ्कजिद्वज्रविष्कम्भो वैनतेयोऽथ वामनः । वातवेगो दिशाचक्षुर्निमेषोऽनिमिषस्तथा
Pankaji, Vajravishkambha, Vainateya, Vamana, Vatavega, Dishachakshus, Nimesha, and Animisha,
त्रिरावः सप्तरावश्च वाल्मीकिर्दीपकस्तथा । दैत्यद्वीपः सरिद्द्वीपः सारसः पद्मकेतनः
Trirava, Saptarava, Valmiki, Dipaka, Daityadvipa, Sariddvipa, Sarasa, and Padmaketana,
सुमुखश्चित्रकेतुश्च चित्रबर्हस्तथाऽनघः। मेषहृत्कुमुदो दक्षः सर्पान्तः सोमभोजनः
Sumukha, Citraketu, Citrabarha, Anagha, Meshahrit, Kumuda, Daksha, Sarpanta, and Somabhojana,
गुरुभारः कपोतश्च सूर्यनेत्रश्चिरान्तकः । विष्णुधर्मा कुमारश्च परिबर्हो हरिस्तथा
Gurubhara, Kapota, Suryanetra, Cirantaka, Vishnudharma, Kumara, Paribarha, and Hari,
सुस्वरो मधुपर्कश्च हेमवर्णस्तथैव च। मालयो मातरिश्वा च निशाकरदिवाकरौ
Susvara, Madhuparka, Hemavarna, Malaya, Matarishva, Nishakara, and Divakara,
एते प्रदेशमात्रेण मयोक्ता गरुडात्मजाः । प्राधान्यतस्ते यशसा कीर्तिताः प्राणिनश्चये
These sons of Garuda have been named by me according to their regions; they are mentioned here in order of their fame among living beings.
