अत्रादित्यो हयशिराः काले पर्वणि पर्वणि । उत्तिष्ठति सुवर्णाख्यो वाग्भिरापूरयञ्जगत्
Here, the sun named Hayaśiras rises at each lunar phase, called Suvarṇa, filling the world with his rays.
यस्मादलं समस्तास्ताः पतन्ति जलमूर्तयः । तस्मात्पातालमित्येव ख्यायते पुरमुत्तमम्
From here, all the forms of water fall forth; therefore, this excellent city is known as Pātāla.
ऐरावणोऽस्मात्सलिलं गृहीत्वा जगतो हितः । मेघेष्वामुञ्चते शीतं यन्महेन्द्रः प्रवर्षति
From here, Airāvata, for the welfare of the world, takes water and releases it into the clouds, which mighty Indra then pours down as rain.
ऐरावतो नागराजो वामनः कुमुदोऽञ्जनः । प्रसूताः सुप्रतीकस्य वंशे वारणसत्तमाः
Airāvata, king of the Nāgas, Vāmana, Kumuda, and Añjana—all these excellent elephants are born in the lineage of Supratīka.
अत्र नानाविधाकारास्तिमयो नैकरूपिणः । अप्सु सोमप्रभां पीत्वा वसन्ति जलचारिणः
Here, beings of many forms and appearances, composed of vapor and of various shapes, dwell in the waters after drinking the Soma-brightness.
अत्र सूर्यांशुभिर्भिन्नाः पातालतलमाश्रिताः । मृता हि दिवसे सूत पुनर्जीवन्ति वै निशि
Here, those who have died in the day, split by the sun's rays and residing in the depths of the underworld, indeed come back to life again at night, O charioteer.
उदयन्नित्यशश्चात्र चन्द्रमा रश्मिबाहुभिः । अमृतं स्पृश्य संस्पर्शात्संजीवयतिदेहिनः
Here, the moon always rises, with rays as arms; by touching the nectar with his contact, he revives embodied beings.
अत्र तेऽधर्मनिरता बद्धाः कालेन पीडिताः । दैतेया निवसन्ति स्म वासवेन हृतश्रियः
Here, those devoted to unrighteousness, bound and afflicted by Time, the Daityas whose splendor was taken by Indra, once dwelled.
अत्र भूतपतिर्नाम सर्वभूतमहेश्वरः । भूतये सर्वभूतानामचरत्तप उत्तमम्
Here, the Lord of beings, the great lord of all creatures, performed supreme austerity for the welfare of all beings.
अत्र गोव्रतिनो विप्राः स्वाध्यायाम्नायकर्शिताः । त्यक्तप्राणा जितस्वर्गा निवसन्ति महर्षयः
Here, Brahmins devoted to the vow of the cow, worn by recitation of the Veda, having given up their lives and conquered heaven, the great sages dwell.
यत्रतत्रशयो नित्यं येनकेनचिदाशितः। येनकेनचिदाच्छन्नः स गोव्रत इहोच्यते
Wherever one lies, however one is fed, however one is covered—such a person is called a follower of the cow-vow here.
पश्य यद्यत्र ते कश्चिद्रोचते गुणतो वरः । वरयिष्यामि तं गत्वा यत्नमास्थाय मातले
If you see anyone here who pleases you in any way, O Matali, I will choose him, going there and making the effort.
अण्डमेतञ्जले न्यस्तं दीप्यमानमिव श्रिया । आप्रजानां निसर्गाद्वै नोद्भिद्यति न सर्पति
This egg, placed in the palm, shines as if with splendor; by its very nature, it neither breaks nor slips away from the offspring.
नास्य जातिं निसर्गं वा कथ्यमानं श्रृणोमि वै। पितरं मातरं चापि नास्य जानाति कश्चन
I do not hear anyone telling of its origin or nature; nor does anyone know its father or mother.
अतः किल महानग्निरन्तकाले समुत्थितः। धक्ष्यते मातले सर्वं त्रैलोक्यं सचराचरम्
Therefore, at the end of time, a great fire is said to arise from this, O Matali, which will burn all the three worlds, with all that moves and does not move.
मातलिस्त्वब्रवीच्छ्रुत्वा नारदस्याथ भाषितम् । न मेऽत्र रोचते कश्चिदन्यतो व्रज माचिरम्
But Matali, having heard Narada's words, said: 'No one here pleases me; go elsewhere without delay.'
हिरण्यपुरमित्येतत्ख्यातं पुरवरं महत्। दैत्यानां दानवानां च मायाशतविचारिणाम्
This great and renowned city is called Hiranyapura, belonging to the Daityas and Danavas, who are skilled in hundreds of magical arts.
अनल्पेन प्रयत्नेन निर्मितं विश्वकर्मणा । मयेन मनसा सृष्टं पातालतलमाश्रितम्
Built by Visvakarman with not a little effort, and conceived in the mind by Maya, it is situated in the depths of the underworld.
अत्र मायासहस्राणि वविकुर्वाणा महौजसः । दानवा निवसन्ति स्म शूरा दत्तवराः पुरा
Here, the mighty Danavas, endowed with boons, once dwelled, performing thousands of magical feats.
नैते शक्रेण नान्येन यमेन वरुणेन वा। शक्यन्ते वशमानेतुं तथैव धनदेन च
These cannot be subdued by Indra, nor by any other, nor by Yama, Varuna, or even by Kubera.
असुराः कालखञ्जाश्च तथा वुष्णुपदोद्भवाः । नैर्ऋता यातुधानाश्च ब्रह्मपादोद्भवाश्च ये
Here dwell Asuras, the lame Kālakañjas, those born from Vishnu's feet, the Nairritas, Yatudhanas, and those born from Brahma's feet.
दंष्ट्रिणो भीमवेगाश्च वातवेगपराक्रमाः । मायावीर्योपसंपन्ना निवसन्त्यत्र मातले
Here, O Matali, dwell those with fangs, of terrible speed, whose power is like the wind, endowed with magical might.
निवातकवचा नाम दानवा युद्धदुर्मदाः । जानासि च यथा शक्रो नैताञ्शक्रोति बाधितुं
The Nivātakavacha are demons, fierce in battle; you know how Indra is unable to subdue them.
बहुशो मातले त्वं च तव पुत्रश्च गोमुखः । निर्भग्नो देवराजश्च सहपुत्रः शचीपतिः
Many times, O Mātali, you and your son Gomukha, along with the king of the gods and his son, have been defeated.
पश्य वेश्मानि रौक्माणि मातले राजतानि च । कर्मणा विधियुक्तेन युक्तान्युपगतानि च
Behold the golden and silver mansions, O Mātali, which have been attained through actions performed according to prescribed rites.
वैदूर्यमणिचित्राणि प्रवालरुचिराणि च । अर्कस्फटिकशुभ्राणि वज्रसारोञ्ज्वलानि च
They are adorned with variegated beryl gems, radiant coral, brilliant sun-crystals, and dazzling diamonds.
पार्थिवानीव चाभास्ति पद्मरागमयानि च। शैलानीव च दृश्यन्ते दारवाणीव चाप्युत
Some shine like earthly palaces, some are made of ruby, some appear like mountains, and some seem as if made of wood.
सूर्यरूपाणि चाभान्ति दीप्ताग्निसदृशानि च । मणिजालविचित्राणि प्रांशूनि निबिडानि च
Some gleam like the sun, others resemble blazing fire; they are tall, dense, and decorated with intricate networks of jewels.
नैतानि शक्यं निर्देष्टु रूपतो द्रव्यतस्तथा । गुणतश्चैव सिद्धानि प्रमाणगुणवन्ति च
These cannot be described either by form or by substance; they are perfected in qualities, possessing measure and excellence.
आक्रीडान्पश्य दैत्यानां तथैव शयनान्युत । रत्नवन्ति महार्हाणि भाजनान्यासनानि च
See the playgrounds of the demons, as well as their beds, vessels, and seats, all adorned with precious gems and of great value.
