यद्येतदस्त्रमस्मासु युक्तं तापस मन्यसे। एतेनापि त्वया योत्स्ये युद्धार्थी ह्यहमागतः
If you consider this weapon suitable against us, O ascetic, then I shall fight you even with it, for I have come here seeking battle.
इत्युक्त्वा शरवर्षेण सर्वतः समवाकिरत् । दम्भोद्भवस्तापसं तं जिवांसुः सहसैनिकः
Having spoken thus, Dambhodbhava, together with his soldiers, showered arrows from all sides upon that ascetic.
तस्य तानस्यतो घोरानिषून्परतनुच्छिदः। कदर्थीकृत्य स मुनिरिषीकाभिः समार्पयत्
The sage, countering those fierce arrows that could cut through bodies, struck them down and responded with reeds.
ततोऽस्मौ प्रासृजद्धोरमैषीकमपराजितः। अस्त्रमप्रतिसन्धेयं तदुद्भुतमिवाभवत्
Then, unconquered, he released a dreadful reed-weapon, an unspeakable missile, which seemed to have arisen suddenly.
तेषामक्षीणि कर्णांश्च नासिकाश्चैव मायया । निमित्तवेधी स मुनिरीषीकाभिः समार्पयत्
By his illusion, the sage struck their ears and noses with reeds, causing them to remain unharmed.
स दृष्ट्वा श्वेतमाकाशमिषीकाभिः समाचितम् । पादयोर्न्यपतद्राजा स्वस्ति मेस्त्विति चाब्रवीत्
Seeing the sky filled with white reeds, the king fell at his feet and said, 'May there be peace for me.'
तमब्रवीन्नरो राजञ्शरण्यः शरणैषिणाम् । ब्रह्मण्यो भव धर्मात्मा मा च स्मैवं पुनः कृथाः
The man said to him, 'O king, you are the refuge of those who seek refuge; be devoted to Brahman, righteous in soul, and do not act thus again.'
नैतादृक्पुरुषो राजन्क्षत्रधर्ममनुस्मरन्। मनसा नृपशार्दूल भवेत्परपुरञ्जयः
Such a person, O king, remembering the duty of a warrior, would not, even in thought, become a conqueror of others.
मा च दर्पसमाविष्टः वा तत्ते राजन्समाहितम् ।। कृतप्रज्ञो वीतलोभो निरहङ्कार आत्मवान्
Do not be possessed by pride, O king, nor let your mind be disturbed; be wise, free from greed, without ego, and self-controlled.
दान्तः क्षान्तो मृदुः सौम्य प्रजाः पालय पार्थिव ।। मास्म भूयः क्षिपेः कंचिदविदित्वा बलाबलम्
Be restrained, patient, gentle, and pleasant; protect your subjects, O ruler; do not attack anyone again without knowing their strength and weakness.
अनुज्ञातः स्वस्ति गच्च मैवं भूयः समाचरेः । कुशलं ब्राह्मणान्पृच्छेरावयोर्वचनाद्भृशम्
Having been permitted, depart in peace; do not act thus again; ask the Brahmins about well-being, as per our words.
ततो राजा तयोः पादावभिवाद्य महात्मनोः । प्रत्याजगाम स्वपुरं धर्मं चैवाचरद्भृशम्
Then the king, having bowed to the feet of those great souls, returned to his city and diligently practiced righteousness.
सुमहच्चापि तत्कर्म यन्नरेण कृतं पुरा । ततो गुणैः सुबहुभिः श्रेष्ठो नारायणोऽभवत्
That deed performed by the man in ancient times was very great; therefore, by many virtues, Narayana became the best.
तस्माद्यावद्धनुःश्रेष्ठे गाण्डीवेऽस्त्रं न युज्यते। तावत्त्वं मानमुत्सृज्य गच्छ राजन्धनञ्जयम्
Therefore, until the supreme bow Gandiva is fitted with a weapon, abandon your pride and go to Dhananjaya, O king.
काकुदीकं शुकं नाकमक्षिसन्तर्जनं तथा। सन्तानं नर्तकं घोरमास्यमोदकमष्टमम्
Kakudika, Shuka, Nakama, Akshi-santarjana, Santana, Nartaka, Ghora, Asyamodaka—the eighth.
एतैर्विद्धाः सर्व एव मरणं यान्ति मानवाः । उन्मत्ताश्च विचेष्टन्ते नष्टसंज्ञा विचेतसः
All men struck by these become subject to death; the mad wander about, losing consciousness and awareness.
स्वपन्ति च प्लवन्ते च च्छर्दयन्ति च मानवाः । मूत्रयन्ते च सततं रुदन्ति च हसन्ति च
Men sleep, float, vomit, urinate constantly, cry, and laugh.
कामक्रोधौ लोभमोहौ मदमानौ तथैव च। मात्सर्याहङ्कुती चैव क्रमादेत उदाहृताः
Desire and anger, greed and delusion, intoxication and pride, envy and arrogance—these are enumerated in order.
निर्माता सर्वलोकानामीश्वरः सर्वकर्मवित्। यस्य नारायणो बन्धुरर्जुनो दुःसहो युधि
The creator of all worlds, the lord who knows all deeds—whose ally is Nārāyaṇa, and whose companion is Arjuna, unconquerable in battle.
कस्तमुत्सहते जेतुं त्रिषु लोकेषु भारत। वीरं कपिध्वजं जिष्णुं यस्य नास्ति समो युधि
Who in the three worlds, O Bhārata, could hope to defeat that hero with the monkey-banner, the victorious one, whose equal in battle does not exist?
असङ्ख्येया गुणाः पार्थे तद्विशिष्टो जनार्दनः। त्वमेव भूयो जानासि कुन्तीपुत्रं धनञ्जयम्
Countless virtues belong to Pārtha, and Janārdana surpasses even those; you alone, again, know the son of Kuntī, Dhanañjaya.
नरनारायणौ यौ तौ तावेवार्जुनकेशवौ । विजानीहि महाराज प्रवीरौ पुरुषोत्तमौ
Those two, Nara and Nārāyaṇa, are indeed Arjuna and Keśava; know them, O great king, as mighty and supreme among men.
यद्येतदेवं जानासि न च मामभिशङ्कसे । आर्यां मतिं समास्थाय शाम्य भारत पाण्डवैः
If you know this to be so and do not suspect me, then, adopting noble intent, make peace with the Pāṇḍavas, O Bhārata.
अथ चेन्मन्यसे श्रेयो न मे भेदो भवेदिति । प्रशाम्य भरतश्रेष्ठ मा च युद्धे मनः कृथाः
But if you think it is better that there be no division with me, then, O foremost of the Bharatas, make peace and do not set your mind on war.
भवतां च कुरुश्रेष्ठ कुलं बहुमतं भुवि । तत्तथैवास्तु भद्रं ते स्वार्थमेवोपचिन्तय
Your lineage, O best of the Kurus, is highly esteemed on earth; let it remain so—may blessings be yours—consider only your own true interest.
जामदग्न्यवचः श्रुत्वा कण्वेऽपि भगवानृषिः । दुर्योधनमिदं वाक्यमब्रवीत्कुरुसंसदि
After hearing the words of Jāmadagnya, the revered sage Kaṇva also spoke these words to Duryodhana in the Kuru assembly.
अक्षयश्चाव्ययश्चैव ब्रह्मा लोकपितामहः। तथैव भगवन्तौ तौ नरनारायणावृषी
Brahmā, the eternal and imperishable grandsire of the worlds, and likewise those two blessed sages, Nara and Nārāyaṇa.
आदित्यानां हि सर्वेषां विष्णुरेकः सनातनः। अजथ्यश्चाव्ययश्चैव शाश्वतः प्रभुरीश्वरः
Among all the Ādityas, Viṣṇu alone is eternal, unborn, imperishable, everlasting, the master and lord.
निमित्तमरणाश्चान्ये चन्द्रसूर्यौ मही जलम् । वायुरग्निस्तथाऽऽकाशं ग्रहास्तारागणास्तथा
Others are causes of death: the moon, the sun, earth, water, wind, fire, space, the planets, and the hosts of stars.
ते च क्षयान्ते जगतो हित्वा लोकत्रयं सदा। क्षयं गच्छन्ति वै सर्वे सृज्यन्ते च पुनः पुनः
At the end of the world’s cycle, all these, always abandoning the three worlds, perish; and are created again and again.
