You are both a relative and dear to Dhritarashtra, O Madhava; truly, Govinda, you know righteousness and wealth in their entirety. Therefore, O wielder of the discus and mace, I wish to hear the reason from you.
Thus addressed, Govinda, great of mind, replied—his voice resounding like thunder at the rising of clouds, grasping his mighty arm.
With eyes like lotuses, he spoke to the king words that were weighty, clear, and unconfused, neither trivial nor obscure, and filled with reason.
'Messengers who have accomplished their purpose accept hospitality and gifts; O Bharata, you will honor me and my companions when my mission is fulfilled.'
Thus addressed, the son of Dhritarashtra replied to Janardana: 'It is not proper for you to treat us as if your mission is incomplete.'
'Whether your mission is accomplished or not, O Madhusudana, we strive to honor you, O Dasharha, but we are unable to do so.'
Nor do we know the reason, O Madhusudana, why, though pleased with the worship offered, you, O Supreme Person, did not remain.
We bear no enmity or conflict with you, Govinda; therefore, you should consider this matter and speak accordingly.
Thus addressed, Janardana looked upon the son of Dhritarashtra and his counselors, and the Dasharha, as if smiling, replied.
I would never abandon righteousness for desire, anger, hatred, profit, argument, or greed—under any circumstances.
Food eaten in joy or in distress is not pleasing, O King, nor are we in distress.
One should not eat the food of an enemy, nor feed one who is hostile; O King, you bear enmity toward the Pandavas, and the Pandavas are as dear to me as my own life.
Without cause, O King, from birth you have hated the Pandavas—your brothers, who follow what is dear, endowed with every virtue.
And likewise, there is no justification for the Pandavas to be hated; the sons of Pandu are established in righteousness—who could rightly speak against them?
Whoever hates them, hates me; whoever follows them, follows me. Know that I am united in spirit with the righteous Pandavas.
He who, out of delusion, follows desire and anger and seeks to harm the virtuous, is called the lowest of men.
He who, out of delusion or greed, seeks to harm his own virtuous kin, though self-controlled and free from anger, does not long remain in prosperity.
But he who, even when displeased at heart, treats those endowed with virtues with affection and brings them under his influence, remains long in fame.
None of this food, prepared with ill intent, should be eaten; it is my firm conviction that only one's own food should be consumed.
Having spoken thus to the unyielding Duryodhana, the mighty-armed one departed from the pure dwelling of the son of Dhritarashtra.
And having left, the great-minded Vasudeva, of mighty arms, went to the residence of the noble Vidura.
There, Drona, Kripa, Bhishma, and Bahlika, along with the Kurus, approached the mighty-armed one staying in Vidura's house.
Those Kurus said to the heroic Madhava, the slayer of Madhu: 'O descendant of Vrishni, we offer you all our homes, filled with treasures.'
To them, Madhusudana of great energy replied: 'Let all of you go; I have received all due honor from you.'
When the Kauravas had departed, Vidura diligently honored the undefeated descendant of Dasharha with all desired offerings.
Then Vidura brought many pure and excellent foods and drinks for the great-souled Keshava.
Having first satisfied the Brahmanas, Madhusudana Krishna gave the knowers of the Veda the highest treasures.
When the foremost twice-born had eaten and were seated on excellent seats, Vidura, pure and well-prepared, served the food.
Filled with deep faith, he spoke these words: 'Be pleased, Govinda, with this modest offering of ours; for otherwise, who could properly honor you?'
Then, together with his followers, like Indra with the Maruts, Vidura ate the pure and excellent foods.
