यद्वा परमकं तेजो येन युक्ता दिवौकसः। ममाप्यनुपमं भूयो देवेभ्यो विद्धि भारत
Whatever supreme power the gods possess, know, O Bharata, that mine is even greater and incomparable among them.
विदीर्यमाणां वसुधां गिरीणां शिखराणि च। लोकस्य पश्यतो राजन्स्थापयाम्यभिमन्त्रणात्
When the earth is splitting and the peaks of mountains are breaking, as the world looks on, O king, I restrain them by my invocation.
चेतनाचेतनस्यास्य जङ्गमस्थावरस्य च। विनाशाय समुत्पन्नमहं घोरं महास्वनम्
For the destruction of both sentient and insentient beings, whether moving or stationary, I arise, producing a dreadful and mighty sound.
अश्मवर्षं च वायुं च शमयामीह नित्यशः । जगतः पश्यतोऽभीक्ष्णं भूतानामनुकम्पया
I continually subdue hailstorms and winds here, out of compassion for the beings, as the world looks on again and again.
स्तम्भितास्वप्सु गच्छन्ति मया रथपदातयः। देवासुराणां भावानामहमेकः प्रवर्तिता
When the waters are restrained, chariots and foot soldiers proceed by my will; I alone set in motion the states of gods and asuras.
अक्षौहिणीभिर्यान्देशान्यामि कार्येण केनचित् । तत्रापो मे प्रवर्तन्ते यत्र यत्राभिकामये
Wherever I go to any region with my armies for any purpose, there the waters flow as I desire.
भयानकानि विषये व्यालादीनि न सन्ति मे । मन्त्रगुप्तानि भूतानि न हिंसन्ति यंकराः
There are no dangerous creatures like serpents in my domain; beings protected by mantras do not harm those who act on my behalf.
निकामवर्षी पर्जन्यो राजन्विषयवासिनाम्। धर्मिष्ठाश्च प्रजाः सर्वा ईतयश्च न सन्ति मे
The rain-god pours abundant rain for the inhabitants of my region, O king; all the people are righteous, and there are no calamities for me.
अश्विनावथ वाय्वग्नी मरुद्भिः सह वृत्रहा। धर्मश्चैव मया द्विष्टान्नोत्सहन्तेऽभिरक्षितुम्
Even if the Ashvins, the Wind, Fire, the Maruts, and Indra, together with Dharma, were to wish to protect those whom I hate, they would not be able to do so.
यदि ह्येते समर्थाः स्युर्मद्द्विषस्त्रातुमञ्जसा। न स्म त्रयोदश समाः पार्था दुःखभवाप्नुयुः
If these indeed had the power to save my enemies directly, the sons of Pritha would not have endured thirteen years of suffering.
नैव देवा न गन्धर्वा नासुरा न च राक्षसाः। शक्तास्त्रातुं मया द्विष्टं सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते
Neither the gods, nor the Gandharvas, nor the Asuras, nor the Rakshasas are able to protect one whom I hate; this is the truth I speak to you.
दयभिध्याम्यहं शश्वच्छुभं वा यदि वाऽशुभम् । नैतद्विपन्नपूर्वं मे मित्रेष्वरिषु चोभयोः
I always feel compassion, whether for good or for evil; never before has this happened to me, either among friends or foes.
भविष्यतीदमिति वा यद्ब्रवीमि परन्तप । नान्यथा भूतपूर्वं च सत्यवागिति मां विदुः
Whatever I declare, thinking 'this will happen,' O scorcher of foes, has never before turned out otherwise; people know me as one who speaks the truth.
लोकसाक्षिकमेतन्मे माहात्म्यं दिक्षु विश्रुतम् । आश्वासनार्थं भवतः प्रोक्तं न श्लाघया नृप
This greatness of mine is witnessed by the world and renowned in all directions; it is spoken for your reassurance, O king, not out of self-praise.
न ह्यहं श्लाघनो राजन्भूतपूर्वः कदाचन । असदाचरितं ह्येतद्यदात्मानं प्रशंसति
For I am not one who boasts, O king, nor have I ever been; it is improper conduct when a person praises himself.
पाण्डवांश्चैव मत्स्यांश्च पाञ्चालान्केकयैः सह । सात्यकिं वासुदेवं च श्रोतासि विजितान्मया
You will hear that I have conquered the Pandavas, the Matsyas, the Panchalas together with the Kekayas, as well as Satyaki and Vasudeva.
सरितः सागरं प्राप्य यथा नश्यन्ति सर्वशः । तथैव ते विनङ्क्ष्यन्ति मामासाद्य सहान्वयाः
Just as rivers, upon reaching the ocean, are entirely lost, so too will they all perish, along with their kin, when they encounter me.
परा बुद्धिः परं तेजो वीर्यं च परमं मम। परा विद्या परो योगो मम तेभ्यो विशिष्यते
My wisdom is supreme, my energy is supreme, my valor is supreme; my knowledge and my discipline surpass all of theirs.
पितामहश्च द्रोणश्च कृपः शल्यः शलस्तथा। अस्त्रेषु यत्प्रजानन्ति सर्वं तन्मयि विद्यते
Whatever Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, Shalya, and Shala know of weapons—all of that is present in me.
इत्युक्ते सञ्जयं भूयः पर्यपृच्छत भारत । ज्ञात्वा युयुत्सोः कार्याणि प्राप्तकालमरिन्दमः
When this was said, Bharata, the subduer of enemies, again questioned Sanjaya, knowing that the time had come to act regarding Yuyutsu.
तथा तु पृच्छन्तमतीव पार्थं वैचित्रवीर्यं तमचिन्तयित्वा। उवाच कर्णो धृतराष्ट्रपुत्रं प्रहर्षयन्संसदि कौरवाणाम्
Thus, as Partha was being intensely questioned, Karna, without concern for the son of Vichitravirya, spoke to Dhritarashtra's son, delighting the Kauravas in the assembly.
मिथ्या प्रतिज्ञाय मया यदस्त्रं रामात्कृतं ब्रह्ममयं पुरस्तात्। विज्ञाय तेनास्मि तदैवमुक्त- स्ते नान्तकाले प्रतिभास्यतीति
I falsely claimed to have received the Brahma weapon from Rama in the past; but he, knowing this, told me then that it would not come to my mind at the critical moment.
महापराधे ह्यपि यन्न तेन महर्षिणाऽहं गुरुणा च शप्तः । शक्तः प्रदग्धुं ह्यपि तिग्मतेजाः ससागरामप्यवनिं महर्षिः
Even though I committed a great offense, that great sage and my teacher did not curse me; the sage, blazing with fierce energy, could have burned up the earth with its oceans.
प्रसादितं ह्यस्य मया मनोऽभू- च्छुश्रूषया स्वेन च पौरुषेण तदस्ति चास्त्रं मम सावशेषं तस्मात्समर्थोऽस्मि ममैष भारः
By my service and my own effort, I won his favor; thus, the weapon remains with me, though with some limitation, and for this reason I am capable—this is my responsibility.
निमेषमात्रात्तमृषेः प्रसाद- मवाप्य पाञ्चालकरूशमत्स्यान्। निहत्य पार्थान्सह पुत्रपौत्रै- र्लोकानहं शस्त्रजितान्प्रपत्स्ये
If I were to gain the sage's favor for even a moment, I would destroy the Panchalas, Karushas, Matsyas, and the sons of Pritha along with their sons and grandsons, and attain the worlds conquered by weapons.
पितामहस्तिष्ठतु ते समीपे द्रोणश्च सर्वे च नरेन्द्रमुख्याः । ऋषिप्रसादेन बलेन गत्वा पार्थान्हनिष्यामि ममैष भारः
Let Bhishma stand by your side, along with Drona and all the foremost kings; by the sage's favor and my strength, I will go and slay the sons of Pritha—this is my responsibility.
एवं ब्रुवन्तं तमुवाच भीष्मः किं कत्थसे कालपरीतबुद्धे। न कर्ण जानासि यथा प्रधाने हते हताः स्युर्धृतराष्ट्रपुत्राः
To him, as he spoke thus, Bhishma replied: 'Why do you boast, O Karna, whose mind is deluded by fate? Do you not know that if the chief is slain, the sons of Dhritarashtra will also be destroyed?'
यत्खाण्डवं दाहयता कृतं हि कृष्णद्वितीयेन धनञ्जयेन। श्रुत्वैव तत्कर्म नियन्तुमात्मा युक्तस्त्वया वै सहबान्धवेन
That deed which was done at Khandava by Dhananjaya, with Krishna as his second—upon merely hearing of it, you should have restrained yourself, along with your kinsmen.
यां चापि शक्तिं त्रिदशाधिपस्ते ददौ महात्मा भगवान्महेन्द्रः। भस्मीकृतां तां समरे विशीर्णां चक्राहतां द्रक्ष्यसि केशवेन
And that mighty weapon which the lord of the gods, the great-souled Indra, gave you—you will see it shattered, reduced to ashes in battle, struck down by Krishna.
यस्ते शरः सर्पमुखो विभाति सदाऽग्र्यमाल्यैर्महितः प्रयत्नात्। स पाण्डुपुत्राभिहतः शरौघैः सह त्वया यास्यति कर्ण नाशम्
That arrow of yours, adorned with a serpent head and always honored with the best garlands, will, struck down by the arrows of the sons of Pandu, go to destruction along with you, O Karna.
