न सोमदत्तो न शलो न कृपो युद्धमिच्छति । सत्यव्रतः पुरुमित्रो जयो भूरिश्रवास्तथा
'Neither Somadatta, nor Shalya, nor Kripa desires war; nor Satyavrata, nor Purumitra, nor Jayadratha, nor Bhurishravas.'
येषु संप्रतितिष्ठेयुः कुरवः पीडिताः परैः । ते युद्धं नाभिनन्दन्ति तत्तुभ्यं तात रोचताम्
'Those Kurus who would stand firm when oppressed by others do not welcome war; yet, my son, you find it pleasing.'
न त्वं करोषि कामेन कर्णः कारयिता तव। दुःशासनश्च पापात्मा शकुनिश्चापि सौबलः
'You do not act by your own will; Karna acts for you, as does the evil-hearted Duhshasana and Shakuni, son of Subala.'
नाहं भवति न द्रोणे नाश्वत्थाम्नि न सञ्जये। न भीष्मे न काम्भोजे न कृपे न च बाह्लिके
'Neither I, nor Drona, nor Ashvatthama, nor Sanjaya, nor Bhishma, nor the Kamboja, nor Kripa, nor Bahlika—'
सत्यव्रते पुरुमित्रे भूरिश्रवसि वा पुनः । अन्येषु वा तावकेषु भारं कुत्वा समाह्वयम्
'—nor Satyavrata, nor Purumitra, nor Bhurishravas, nor any of your other supporters, would bear the burden of this challenge.'
अहं च तात कर्णश्च रणयज्ञं वितत्य वै। युधिष्ठिरं पशुं कृत्वा दीक्षितौ भरतर्षभ
'But I and Karna, having prepared the sacrificial battle, with Yudhishthira as the sacrificial victim, are consecrated, O bull of the Bharatas.'
रथो वेदी स्रुवः खङ्गो गदा स्रुक् कवचोऽजिनम् । चातुर्होत्रं च धुर्या मे शरा दर्भा हविर्यशः
The chariot is my altar, the ladle my sword, the mace my sacrificial spoon, the armor my garment; the fourfold sacrifice is yoked for me, arrows are the sacred grass, and fame is the offering.
आत्मयज्ञेन नृपते इष्ट्वा वैवस्वतं रणे। विजित्य च समेष्यावो हतामित्रौ श्रिया वृतौ
By offering myself in sacrifice, O king, I shall worship Vaivasvata in battle; conquering, we shall return, adorned with glory, having slain our enemies.
अहं च तात कर्णश्च भ्राता दुःशासनश्च मे। एते वयं हनिष्यामः पाण्डवान्समरे त्रयः
I, dear father, Karna, and my brother Duhshasana—these three of us will slay the Pandavas in battle.
अहं हि पाण्डवान्हत्वा प्रशास्ता पृथिवीमिमाम् । मां वा हत्वा पाण्डुपुत्रा भोक्तारः पृथिवीमिमां
If I kill the Pandavas, I will rule this earth; or, if the sons of Pandu kill me, they will enjoy this earth.
त्यक्तं मे जीवितं राज्यं धनं सर्वं च पार्थिव । न जातु पाण्डवैः सार्धं वसेयमहमच्युत
I have renounced my life, kingdom, wealth, and all, O king; never will I dwell together with the Pandavas, O Achyuta.
यावद्धि सूच्यास्तीक्ष्णाया विध्येदग्रेण मारिष । तावदप्यपरित्याज्यं भूमेर्नः पाण्डवान्प्रति
As long as the sharp tip of a needle can pierce, O sage, so long shall we not relinquish even a portion of the earth to the Pandavas.
सर्वान्वस्तात शोचामि त्यक्तो दुर्योधनो मया। ये मन्दमनुयास्यध्वं यान्तं वैवस्वतक्षयम्
I grieve for all, father, for Duryodhana has been abandoned by me; those who foolishly follow him are heading toward the abode of Yama.
रुरूणामिव यूथेषु व्याघ्राः प्रहरतां वराः। वरान्वरान्हनिष्यन्ति समेता युधि पाण्डवाः
Like tigers among herds of deer, the foremost among warriors will slay the best among the best, as the Pandavas meet in battle.
प्रतीपमिव मे भाति युयुधानेन भारती। व्यस्ता सीमन्तिनी ग्रस्ता प्रमृष्टा दीर्घबाहुना
The Bharata land appears to me as if opposed by Yuyudhana; the parted lady, seized and ravished by the long-armed one.
संपूर्मं पूरयन्भूयो धनं पार्थस्य माधवः। शैनेयः समरे स्थाता बीजवत्प्रवपञ्शरान्
Madhava will again fill Arjuna's wealth; Satyaki will stand firm in battle, sowing arrows like seeds.
सेनामुखे प्रयुद्धानां भीमसेनो भविष्यति। तं सर्वे संश्रयिष्यन्ति प्राकारमकुतोभयम्
Bhimasena will be at the front of the army in battle; all will seek refuge in him, as in an impregnable fortress.
यदा द्रक्ष्यसि भीमेन कुञ्जरान्विनिपातितान्। विशीर्णदन्तान्गिर्याभान्भिन्नकुम्भान्सशोणितान्
When you see elephants struck down by Bhima, their tusks shattered, resembling mountains, their heads split and bloodied—
तानभिप्रेक्ष्य सङ्ग्रामे विशीर्णानिव पर्वतान्। भीतो भीमस्य संस्पर्शात्स्मर्तासि वचनस्य मे
Seeing them in battle, broken like mountains, you will remember my words, frightened by Bhima's touch.
निर्दग्धं भीमसेनेन सैन्यं रथहयद्विपम् । गतिमग्नेरिव प्रेक्ष्य स्मर्तासि वचनस्य मे
When Bhimasena burns the army of chariots, horses, and elephants, seeing their destruction like the path of fire, you will recall my words.
महद्वो भयमागामि न चेच्छाम्यथ पाण्डवैः। गदया भीमसेनेन हताः शममुपैष्यथ
Great fear is coming upon you; unless you make peace with the Pandavas, you will be struck down by Bhimasena's mace.
महावनमिव च्छिन्नं यदा द्रक्ष्यसि पातितम् । बलं कुरूणां भीमेन तदा स्मर्तासि मे वचः
When you see the Kuru army fallen, like a great forest cut down, then you will remember my words.
एतावदुक्त्वा राजा तु सर्वांस्तान्पृथिवीपतीन्। अनुभाष्य महाराज पुनः पप्रच्छ सञ्जयम्
Having spoken thus, the king addressed all those rulers of the earth; then, O great king, he again questioned Sanjaya.
ब्रूहि सञ्जय यच्छेषं वासुदेवादनन्तरम्। यजर्जुन उवाच त्वां परं कौतूहलं हि मे
Tell me, Sanjaya, what remains after Vasudeva has spoken; for Arjuna has addressed you, and I am greatly curious.
वासुदेववचः श्रुत्वा कुन्तीपुत्रो धनञ्जयः। उवाच काले दुर्धर्षो वासुदेवस्य शृण्वतः
Hearing the words of Vāsudeva, the son of Kuntī, Dhanañjaya, spoke at the proper time, undaunted, as Vāsudeva listened.
पितामहं शान्तनवं धृतराष्ट्रं च सञ्जय । द्रोणं कृपं च शल्यं च महाराजं च बाह्लिकम्
To Bhīṣma, son of Śāntanu, to Dhṛtarāṣṭra, to Sañjaya, to Droṇa, to Kṛpa, to Śalya, and to King Bāhlika,
द्रौणिं च सौमदत्तिं च शकुनिं चापि सौबलम् । दुश्शासनं शलं चैव पुरुमित्रं विविंशतिम्
To Aśvatthāman, to Kṛtavarman, to Śakuni son of Subala, to Duśśāsana, to Śala, to Purumitra, and to Viviṃśati,
विकर्णं चित्रसेनं च जयत्सेनं च पार्थिवम्। विन्दानुविन्दावावन्त्यौ दुर्मुखं चापि पौरवम्
To Vikarṇa, to Citrasena, to King Jayatsena, to Vindya and Anuvinda of Avanti, and to Durmukha of the Paurava line,
सैन्धवं दुस्सहं चैव भूरिश्रवसमेव च। भगदत्तं च राजानं जलसन्धं च पौरवम्
To the Sindhu king, to Dussaha, to Bhūriśravas, to King Bhagadatta, and to Jalasandha of the Pauravas,
ये चाप्यन्ये पार्थिवास्तत्र योद्धुं समागताः कौरवाणां प्रियार्थम्। मुमूर्षवः पाण्डवाग्नौ प्रदीप्ते समानीता धार्तराष्ट्रोण सूत
And to all other kings who have assembled there to fight for the sake of the Kauravas, brought together by Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s son, ready to perish in the blazing fire of the Pāṇḍavas,
