तान्सर्वानाहवे क्रुद्धान्सानुबन्धान्समागतान्। अहमेकः समादास्ये तिमिर्यत्स्यानिवोदकात्
All those who gather in anger for battle, with their followers, I alone will subdue, as darkness is dispelled by water.
भीष्मं द्रोणं कृपं कर्णं द्रौणिं शल्यं सुयोधनम् । एतांश्चापि निरोत्स्यामि वेलेव मकरालयम्
Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Kṛpa, Karṇa, Drauṇi, Śalya, Suyodhana—these too I will restrain, as the shore restrains the ocean's abode of makaras.
तथा ब्रुवन्तं धर्मात्मा प्राह राजा युधिष्ठिरः। तव धैर्यं च वीर्यं च पाञ्चालः पाण्डवैः सह
To him speaking thus, the righteous king Yudhiṣṭhira replied: 'Your courage and strength, together with the Pāñcālas and Pāṇḍavas—'
सर्वे समधिरूढाः स्म सङ्ग्रामान्नः समुद्धर । जानामि त्वां महाबाहो क्षत्रधर्मे व्यवस्थितम्
'We are all fully prepared; deliver us from this battle. I know you, mighty-armed one, as steadfast in the warrior's duty.'
समर्थमेकं पर्याप्तं कौरवाणां विनिग्रहे । पुरस्तादुपयातानां कौरवाणां युयुत्सताम्
'You alone are capable and sufficient to subdue the Kauravas, those who have come forward, eager for battle.'
भवत्ता यद्विधातव्यं तन्नः श्रेयः परंतप। सङ्ग्रामादपयातानां भग्नानां शरणैषिणाम्
'Whatever you decide to do will be our highest good, scorcher of foes, for those who flee the battle, broken and seeking refuge.'
पौरुषं दर्शयञ्शूरो यस्तिष्ठेदग्रतः पुमान्। क्रीणीयात्तं सहस्रेण इति नीतिमतां मतम्
'It is the opinion of the wise that the brave man who stands at the front, showing valor, should be rewarded with a thousand.'
स त्वं शूरश्च वीरश्च विक्रान्तश्च नरर्षभ । भयार्तानां परित्राता संयुगेषु न संशयः
'You are brave, heroic, and mighty, bull among men; there is no doubt you are the protector of those stricken by fear in battle.'
एवं ब्रुवति कौन्तेये धर्मात्मनि युधिष्ठिरे। धृष्टद्युम्न उवाचेदं मां वचो गतसाध्वसम् । सर्वाञ्जनपदान्सूत योधा दुर्योधनस्य ये
As the son of Kunti, Yudhishthira, steadfast in righteousness, was speaking thus, Dhrishtadyumna, his fear dispelled, addressed me with these words: 'O Suta, all the warriors of Duryodhana from every land—'
सबाह्लिकान्कुरून्ब्रूयाः प्रातिपेयाञ्शरद्वतः । सूतपुत्रं तथा द्रोणं सहपुत्रं जयद्रथम्
'—together with the Bahlikas, the Kurus, the sons of Pratipa, Sharadvata, the son of Suta, also Drona with his son, and Jayadratha—'
दुःशासनं विकर्णं च तथा दुर्योधनं नृपम् भीष्मं च ब्रूहि गत्वा त्वमाशु गच्छ च माचिरम्
'—Duhshasana, Vikarna, and likewise King Duryodhana, and Bhishma—go and speak to them quickly; do not delay.'
युधिष्ठिरः साधुनैवाभ्युपेयो मा वोऽवधीदर्जुनो देवगुप्तः। राज्यं दद्ध्वं धर्मराजस्य तूर्णं याचध्वं वै पाण्डवं लोकवीरम्
'Yudhishthira is to be approached only with righteousness. Do not disregard Arjuna, protected by the gods. Quickly return the kingdom to the king of dharma; entreat the heroic Pandava, renowned in the world.'
नैतादृशो हि योधोऽस्ति पृथिव्यामिह कश्चन। यथाविधः सव्यसाची पाण्डवः सत्यविक्रमः
'There is truly no warrior on earth like the left-handed Pandava, Arjuna, of unfailing valor.'
देवैर्हि संभृतो दिव्यो रथो गाण्डीवधन्वनः । न सजेयोमनुष्येण मा स्म कृद्ध्वं मनो युधि
'For the divine chariot of Gandiva-wielding Arjuna is assembled by the gods; I could not withstand him in battle. Do not let your minds be set on war.'
क्षत्रतेजा ब्रह्मचारी कौमारादपि पाण्डवः। तेन संयुगमेष्यन्ति मन्दा विलपतो मम
'The Pandava, from his youth, possesses the energy of a kshatriya and the discipline of a brahmachari; because of him, the foolish will come to battle, lamenting my words.'
दुर्योधन निवर्तस्व युद्धाद्भरतसत्तम । न हि युद्धं प्रशंसन्ति सर्वावस्थमरिन्दम
'Duryodhana, turn back from battle, O best of the Bharatas; for in no situation do the wise praise war, O subduer of enemies.'
अलमर्धं पृथिव्यास्ते सहामात्यस्य जीवितुम् । प्रयच्छ पाण्डुपुत्राणां यथोचितमरिन्दम
'It is enough for you to live with half the earth, along with your ministers; grant the Pandu sons their due share, O subduer of foes.'
एतद्धि कुरवः सर्वे मन्यन्ते धर्मसंहितम् । यत्त्वं प्रशान्तिं मन्येथाः पाण्डुपुत्रैर्महात्मभिः
'For all the Kurus consider this to be in accord with dharma: that you should seek peace with the high-souled sons of Pandu.'
अङ्गेमां समवेक्षस्व पुत्र स्वामेव वाहिनीम् । जात एष तवाभावस्त्वं तु मोहान्न बुद्ध्यसे
'Consider, my son, this army as your own; this enmity has arisen for you, but you do not understand it due to delusion.'
न त्वहं युद्धमिच्छामि नैतदिच्छति बाह्लिकः। न च भीष्मो न च द्रोणो नाश्वत्थामा न सञ्जयः
'I do not desire war, nor does Bahlika wish it; nor Bhishma, nor Drona, nor Ashvatthama, nor Sanjaya.'
न सोमदत्तो न शलो न कृपो युद्धमिच्छति । सत्यव्रतः पुरुमित्रो जयो भूरिश्रवास्तथा
'Neither Somadatta, nor Shalya, nor Kripa desires war; nor Satyavrata, nor Purumitra, nor Jayadratha, nor Bhurishravas.'
येषु संप्रतितिष्ठेयुः कुरवः पीडिताः परैः । ते युद्धं नाभिनन्दन्ति तत्तुभ्यं तात रोचताम्
'Those Kurus who would stand firm when oppressed by others do not welcome war; yet, my son, you find it pleasing.'
न त्वं करोषि कामेन कर्णः कारयिता तव। दुःशासनश्च पापात्मा शकुनिश्चापि सौबलः
'You do not act by your own will; Karna acts for you, as does the evil-hearted Duhshasana and Shakuni, son of Subala.'
नाहं भवति न द्रोणे नाश्वत्थाम्नि न सञ्जये। न भीष्मे न काम्भोजे न कृपे न च बाह्लिके
'Neither I, nor Drona, nor Ashvatthama, nor Sanjaya, nor Bhishma, nor the Kamboja, nor Kripa, nor Bahlika—'
सत्यव्रते पुरुमित्रे भूरिश्रवसि वा पुनः । अन्येषु वा तावकेषु भारं कुत्वा समाह्वयम्
'—nor Satyavrata, nor Purumitra, nor Bhurishravas, nor any of your other supporters, would bear the burden of this challenge.'
अहं च तात कर्णश्च रणयज्ञं वितत्य वै। युधिष्ठिरं पशुं कृत्वा दीक्षितौ भरतर्षभ
'But I and Karna, having prepared the sacrificial battle, with Yudhishthira as the sacrificial victim, are consecrated, O bull of the Bharatas.'
रथो वेदी स्रुवः खङ्गो गदा स्रुक् कवचोऽजिनम् । चातुर्होत्रं च धुर्या मे शरा दर्भा हविर्यशः
The chariot is my altar, the ladle my sword, the mace my sacrificial spoon, the armor my garment; the fourfold sacrifice is yoked for me, arrows are the sacred grass, and fame is the offering.
आत्मयज्ञेन नृपते इष्ट्वा वैवस्वतं रणे। विजित्य च समेष्यावो हतामित्रौ श्रिया वृतौ
By offering myself in sacrifice, O king, I shall worship Vaivasvata in battle; conquering, we shall return, adorned with glory, having slain our enemies.
अहं च तात कर्णश्च भ्राता दुःशासनश्च मे। एते वयं हनिष्यामः पाण्डवान्समरे त्रयः
I, dear father, Karna, and my brother Duhshasana—these three of us will slay the Pandavas in battle.
अहं हि पाण्डवान्हत्वा प्रशास्ता पृथिवीमिमाम् । मां वा हत्वा पाण्डुपुत्रा भोक्तारः पृथिवीमिमां
If I kill the Pandavas, I will rule this earth; or, if the sons of Pandu kill me, they will enjoy this earth.
