सर्वे ह्यतिरथाः शूराः कीर्तिमन्तः प्रतापिनः । सूर्यपावकयोस्तुल्यास्तेजसा समितिंजयाः
All are mighty warriors, heroes, renowned and powerful; equal in brilliance to the sun and fire, victorious in battle.
येषां युधिष्ठिरो नेता गोप्ता च मधुसूदनः । योधौ च पाण्डवौ वीरौ सव्यसाचिवृकोदरौ
Their leader is Yudhishthira, and their protector is Madhusudana; the two heroic Pandavas, Savyasachi and Vrikodara, are their fighters.
नकुलः सहदेवश्च धृष्टद्युम्नश्च पार्षतः। सात्यकिर्द्रुपदश्चैव धृष्टकेतुश्च सानुजः
Nakula, Sahadeva, Dhrishtadyumna the son of Prishata, Satyaki, Drupada, and Dhrishtaketu with his brother.
उत्तमौजाश्च पाञ्चाल्यो युधामन्युश्च दुर्जयः। शिखण्डी क्षत्रदेवश्च तथा वैराटिरुत्तरः
Uttamauja of the Panchalas, Yudhāmanyu the unconquerable, Shikhandi, Kshatradeva, and Uttara the prince of Virata.
काशयश्चेदयश्चैव मत्स्याः सर्वे च सृञ्जयाः । विराटपुत्रो बभ्रुश्च पाञ्चालाश्च प्रभद्रकाः
The kings of Kashi and the Edakas, all the Matsyas and Sringayas, Babru the son of Virata, and the noble Panchalas.
येषांमिन्द्रोऽप्यकामानां न हरेत्पृथिवीमिमाम्। वीराणां रणधीराणां ये भिन्द्युः पर्वतानपि
Even Indra, unwilling, could not take this earth from them—these warriors, steadfast in battle, who could break even mountains.
तान्सर्वगुणसंपन्नानमनुष्यप्रतापिनः । क्रोशतो मम दुष्पुत्रो योद्धुमिच्छति सञ्जय
Against all these, endowed with every virtue and human prowess, my wicked son, shouting, wishes to fight, O Sanjaya.
उभौ स्व एकजातीयौ तथोभौ भूमिगोचरौ । अथ कस्मात्पाण्डवानामेकतो मन्यसे जयम्
Both sides are of the same lineage, both move upon the earth; then why do you think victory belongs to the Pandavas alone?
पितामहं च द्रोणं च कृपं कर्णं च दुर्जयम्। जयद्रथं सोमदत्तमश्वत्थामानमेव च
The grandsire, Drona, Kripa, Karna the unconquerable, Jayadratha, Somadatta, and Ashvatthama as well.
सुतेजसो महेष्वासानिन्द्रोऽपि सहितोऽमरैः । अशक्तः समरे जेतुं किं पुनस्तात पाण्डवाः
All of great energy, mighty bowmen—even Indra with the gods could not conquer them in battle; how then, father, could the Pandavas?
सर्वे च पृथिवीपाला मदर्थे तात पाण्डवान्। आर्याः शस्त्रभृतः शूराः समर्थाः प्रतिबाधितुं
All the rulers of the earth, noble, armed, and valiant, are ready, dear father, to oppose the Pāṇḍavas for my sake.
न मामकान्पाण्डवास्ते समर्थाः प्रतिवीक्षितुम् । पराक्रान्तो ह्यहं पाण्डून्सपुत्रान्योद्धुमाहवे
The Pāṇḍavas are not able to withstand my forces; for I have advanced, together with my sons, to fight them in battle.
मत्प्रियं पार्थिवाः सर्वे ये चिकीर्षन्ति भारत । ते तानावारयिष्यन्ति ऐणेयानिव तन्तुना
All the kings who wish to please me, O Bhārata, will restrain those sons of Pāṇḍu as easily as a thread restrains needles.
महता रथवंशेन शरजालैश्च मामकैः । अभिद्रुता भविष्यन्ति पाञ्चालाः पाण्डवैः सह
With a great host of chariots and showers of arrows from my warriors, the Pāñcālas, together with the Pāṇḍavas, will be overwhelmed.
उन्मत्त इव मे पुत्रो विलपत्येष सञ्जय। न हि शक्तो रमे जेतुं धर्मराजं युधिष्ठिरम्
My son raves like a madman, O Sañjaya; he is not able to defeat King Yudhiṣṭhira, steadfast in righteousness, in battle.
जानाति हि यथा भीष्मः पाण्डवानां यशस्विनाम्। बलवत्तां सपुत्राणां धर्मज्ञानां महात्मनाम्
For Bhīṣma knows well the strength of the illustrious Pāṇḍavas, with their sons, who are mighty, righteous, and great-souled.
यतो नारोचयदयं विग्रहं तैर्महात्मभिः। किं तु सञ्जय मे ब्रूहि पुनस्तेषां विचेष्टितम्
Therefore, he did not approve of conflict with those great souls; but, Sañjaya, tell me again of their actions.
कस्तांस्तरस्विनो भूयः सन्दीपयति पाण्डवान्। अर्चिष्मतो महेष्वासान्हविषा पावकानिव
Who is it that further kindles those swift Pāṇḍavas, radiant and mighty archers, like offerings enkindle blazing fires?
धृष्टद्युम्नः सदैवैतान्सन्दीपयति भारत। युद्ध्यध्वमिति माभैष्ट युद्धाद्भरतसत्तमाः
It is Dhṛṣṭadyumna who always inspires them, O Bhārata, saying, 'Fight! Do not fear, best of the Bhāratas, from battle.'
ये केचित्पार्थिवास्तत्र धार्तराष्ट्रेण संवृताः। युद्धे समागमिष्यन्ति तुमुले शस्त्रसङ्कुले
Any kings there who are aligned with Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son will come together in the tumultuous, weapon-filled battle.
तान्सर्वानाहवे क्रुद्धान्सानुबन्धान्समागतान्। अहमेकः समादास्ये तिमिर्यत्स्यानिवोदकात्
All those who gather in anger for battle, with their followers, I alone will subdue, as darkness is dispelled by water.
भीष्मं द्रोणं कृपं कर्णं द्रौणिं शल्यं सुयोधनम् । एतांश्चापि निरोत्स्यामि वेलेव मकरालयम्
Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Kṛpa, Karṇa, Drauṇi, Śalya, Suyodhana—these too I will restrain, as the shore restrains the ocean's abode of makaras.
तथा ब्रुवन्तं धर्मात्मा प्राह राजा युधिष्ठिरः। तव धैर्यं च वीर्यं च पाञ्चालः पाण्डवैः सह
To him speaking thus, the righteous king Yudhiṣṭhira replied: 'Your courage and strength, together with the Pāñcālas and Pāṇḍavas—'
सर्वे समधिरूढाः स्म सङ्ग्रामान्नः समुद्धर । जानामि त्वां महाबाहो क्षत्रधर्मे व्यवस्थितम्
'We are all fully prepared; deliver us from this battle. I know you, mighty-armed one, as steadfast in the warrior's duty.'
समर्थमेकं पर्याप्तं कौरवाणां विनिग्रहे । पुरस्तादुपयातानां कौरवाणां युयुत्सताम्
'You alone are capable and sufficient to subdue the Kauravas, those who have come forward, eager for battle.'
भवत्ता यद्विधातव्यं तन्नः श्रेयः परंतप। सङ्ग्रामादपयातानां भग्नानां शरणैषिणाम्
'Whatever you decide to do will be our highest good, scorcher of foes, for those who flee the battle, broken and seeking refuge.'
पौरुषं दर्शयञ्शूरो यस्तिष्ठेदग्रतः पुमान्। क्रीणीयात्तं सहस्रेण इति नीतिमतां मतम्
'It is the opinion of the wise that the brave man who stands at the front, showing valor, should be rewarded with a thousand.'
स त्वं शूरश्च वीरश्च विक्रान्तश्च नरर्षभ । भयार्तानां परित्राता संयुगेषु न संशयः
'You are brave, heroic, and mighty, bull among men; there is no doubt you are the protector of those stricken by fear in battle.'
एवं ब्रुवति कौन्तेये धर्मात्मनि युधिष्ठिरे। धृष्टद्युम्न उवाचेदं मां वचो गतसाध्वसम् । सर्वाञ्जनपदान्सूत योधा दुर्योधनस्य ये
As the son of Kunti, Yudhishthira, steadfast in righteousness, was speaking thus, Dhrishtadyumna, his fear dispelled, addressed me with these words: 'O Suta, all the warriors of Duryodhana from every land—'
सबाह्लिकान्कुरून्ब्रूयाः प्रातिपेयाञ्शरद्वतः । सूतपुत्रं तथा द्रोणं सहपुत्रं जयद्रथम्
'—together with the Bahlikas, the Kurus, the sons of Pratipa, Sharadvata, the son of Suta, also Drona with his son, and Jayadratha—'
