केकया भ्रातरः पञ्च सर्वे लोहितकध्वजाः । अक्षौहिणीपरिवृताः पाण्डवानभिसंश्रिताः
The five brothers of Kekaya, all bearing red banners, joined the Pandavas, each accompanied by an akshauhini.
एतानेतावतस्तत्र तानपश्यं समागतान्। ये पाण्डवार्थे योत्स्यन्ति धार्तराष्ट्रस्य वाहिनीम्
I saw all these assembled there—those who would fight for the Pandavas' cause against the army of Dhritarashtra.
यो वेद `मानुषं व्यूहं दैवं गान्धर्वमासुरम्। स तत्र सेनाप्रमुखे धृषटद्युम्नो महारथः
He who knows the human, divine, Gandharva, and Asura formations—that great chariot-warrior Dhrishtadyumna—was at the head of the army.
भीष्मः शान्तनवो राजन्भागः क्लृप्तः शिखण्डिनः तं विराटोऽनुसंयाता सार्धं मत्स्यैः प्रहारिभिः
Bhishma, son of Shantanu, O King, was assigned to Shikhandi's division; Virata, with the striking Matsyas, followed him.
ज्येष्ठस्य पाण्डुपुत्रस्य भागो मद्राधिपो बली। तौ तु तत्राब्रुवन्केचिद्विषमौ नो मताविति
The mighty king of Madra was assigned to the division of the eldest son of Pandu; but some there said, 'Our opinions differ.'
दुर्योधनः सहसुतः सार्धं भ्रातृशतेन च। प्राच्याश्च दाक्षिणात्याश्च भीमसेनस्य भागतः
Duryodhana, with his sons and a hundred brothers, and the warriors from the east and south, were assigned to Bhimasena's division.
अर्जुनस्य तु भागेन कर्णे वैकर्तनो मतः। अश्वत्थामा विकर्णश्च सैन्धवश्च जयद्रथः
Karna, son of Vikartana, was considered Arjuna's counterpart; Ashvatthama, Vikarna, the Sindhu king, and Jayadratha as well.
अशक्याश्चैव ये केचित्पृथिव्यां शूरमानिनः । सर्वांस्तानर्जुनः पार्थः कल्पयामास भागतः
All those on earth who considered themselves invincible heroes—Arjuna, son of Pritha, assigned them all to his own division.
महेष्वांसा राजपुत्रा भ्रातरः पञ्च केकयाः । केकयानेव भागेन कृत्वा योत्स्यन्ति संयुगे
The five Kekaya brothers, royal sons mighty with great bows, were assigned to the Kekaya division and would fight in battle.
तेषामेव कृतो भागो मालवाः साल्वकास्तथा। त्रिगर्तानां च वै मुख्यौ यौ तौ संशप्तकाविति
The Malavas and the Salvas were assigned to their division; and the two chief Trigartas, known as the Samsaptakas, as well.
दुर्योधनसुताः सर्वे तथा दुःशासनस्य च। सौभद्रेण कृतो भागो राजा चैव बृहद्बलः

Sahadeva, the heroic son of Madri, fierce in battle, assigned his own portion to your brother-in-law, the son of Subala.
उलूकं चैव कैतव्यं ये च सारस्वता गणाः। नकुलः कल्पयामास भागं माद्रवतीसुतः
Nakula, son of Madri, allotted his share against Uluka, the son of Kaitava, and the groups of Sarasvatas.
ये चान्ये पार्थिवा राजन्प्रत्युद्यास्यन्ति सङ्गरे। समाह्वानेन तांश्चापि पाण्डुपुत्रा अकल्पयन्
And all other kings, O ruler, who will oppose in battle, the sons of Pandu also assigned them by challenge.
एवमेषामनीकानि प्रविभक्तानि भागशः। यत्ते कार्यं सपुत्रस्य क्रियतां तदकालिकम्
Thus, these armies have been divided into portions; whatever task remains for your son, let it be done without delay.
न सन्ति सर्वे पुत्रा मे मूढा दुर्द्यूतदेविनः। येषां युद्धं बलवता भीमेन रणमूर्धनि
Not all my sons are foolish, ruined by evil dice; those whose battle is with mighty Bhima at the forefront of war.
राजानः पार्थिवाः सर्वे प्रोक्षिताः कालधर्मणा । गाण्डीवाग्निं प्रवेक्ष्यन्ति पतङ्गा इव पावकम्
All the kings and rulers, sprinkled by the law of time, will enter the fire of Gandiva like moths into a flame.
विद्रुतां वाहिनीं मन्ये कृतवैरैर्महात्मभिः । तां रणे केऽनुयास्यन्ति प्रभग्नां पाण्डवैर्युधि
I think the army will be scattered by those great souls who have made enemies; who will follow the shattered force in battle against the Pandavas?
सर्वे ह्यतिरथाः शूराः कीर्तिमन्तः प्रतापिनः । सूर्यपावकयोस्तुल्यास्तेजसा समितिंजयाः
All are mighty warriors, heroes, renowned and powerful; equal in brilliance to the sun and fire, victorious in battle.
येषां युधिष्ठिरो नेता गोप्ता च मधुसूदनः । योधौ च पाण्डवौ वीरौ सव्यसाचिवृकोदरौ
Their leader is Yudhishthira, and their protector is Madhusudana; the two heroic Pandavas, Savyasachi and Vrikodara, are their fighters.
नकुलः सहदेवश्च धृष्टद्युम्नश्च पार्षतः। सात्यकिर्द्रुपदश्चैव धृष्टकेतुश्च सानुजः
Nakula, Sahadeva, Dhrishtadyumna the son of Prishata, Satyaki, Drupada, and Dhrishtaketu with his brother.
उत्तमौजाश्च पाञ्चाल्यो युधामन्युश्च दुर्जयः। शिखण्डी क्षत्रदेवश्च तथा वैराटिरुत्तरः
Uttamauja of the Panchalas, Yudhāmanyu the unconquerable, Shikhandi, Kshatradeva, and Uttara the prince of Virata.
काशयश्चेदयश्चैव मत्स्याः सर्वे च सृञ्जयाः । विराटपुत्रो बभ्रुश्च पाञ्चालाश्च प्रभद्रकाः
The kings of Kashi and the Edakas, all the Matsyas and Sringayas, Babru the son of Virata, and the noble Panchalas.
येषांमिन्द्रोऽप्यकामानां न हरेत्पृथिवीमिमाम्। वीराणां रणधीराणां ये भिन्द्युः पर्वतानपि
Even Indra, unwilling, could not take this earth from them—these warriors, steadfast in battle, who could break even mountains.
तान्सर्वगुणसंपन्नानमनुष्यप्रतापिनः । क्रोशतो मम दुष्पुत्रो योद्धुमिच्छति सञ्जय
Against all these, endowed with every virtue and human prowess, my wicked son, shouting, wishes to fight, O Sanjaya.
उभौ स्व एकजातीयौ तथोभौ भूमिगोचरौ । अथ कस्मात्पाण्डवानामेकतो मन्यसे जयम्
Both sides are of the same lineage, both move upon the earth; then why do you think victory belongs to the Pandavas alone?
पितामहं च द्रोणं च कृपं कर्णं च दुर्जयम्। जयद्रथं सोमदत्तमश्वत्थामानमेव च
The grandsire, Drona, Kripa, Karna the unconquerable, Jayadratha, Somadatta, and Ashvatthama as well.
सुतेजसो महेष्वासानिन्द्रोऽपि सहितोऽमरैः । अशक्तः समरे जेतुं किं पुनस्तात पाण्डवाः
All of great energy, mighty bowmen—even Indra with the gods could not conquer them in battle; how then, father, could the Pandavas?
