With that ruler of the Chedis, the Pandavas advanced, surrounded by an army division, relying upon him.
He who is the refuge of the Pandavas, as Indra is for the gods—by that Vasudeva, the Pandavas advanced.
Just as the brother of the king of the Chedis, Sharabha, O bull among Bharatas, together with Karakarsha, joined those two and advanced.
Tarasandhi and Sahadeva, and Jayatsena—those two heroes, steadfast as rivals in battle, stood for the Pandavas' cause.
And Drupada, of great energy, surrounded by a mighty force, having renounced his own life, stood ready for the Pandavas' sake.
These and many others, kings from the east and north, hundreds who have joined, stand with the righteous king.
All those of great enthusiasm whom you have named—if they all unite on one side, and Bhima stands alone on the other.
It is from Bhimasena that my greatest fear arises, O father, because of his wrath and impatience, like a tiger in a mighty roar.
I stay awake all night, breathing long and hot, O father, afraid of Vṛkodara, as another beast fears the lion.
For I see no one in this army who could withstand him in battle—he of mighty arms and energy equal to Indra.
The son of Kunti is impatient, the Pandava is firm in enmity; he is not playful, is frenzied, looks askance, and roars greatly.
He is swift, enthusiastic, strong-armed, and immensely powerful; he will bring an end to my slow-witted sons through battle.
Vṛkodara, bearing the mace seized from the house of the great serpent, O bull among Kurus, will be like Death with his staff in battle.
I envision in my mind his eight iron maces, terrifying and adorned with gold, raised like the staff of Brahma.
Just as a lion, born strong, moves among herds of deer, so Bhima will move among my sons in the midst of their forces.
Among all my sons, he alone is fierce in action, eats much, is contrary, and even in youth is always impetuous.
My heart trembles when I recall how Duryodhana and the others, even in their youth, were crushed by him in battle, as elephants are subdued.
My sons have always been afflicted by his strength; Bhima, of terrible might, is the very cause of this division.
I seem to see Bhima before me in battle, seized by wrath, devouring ranks of men, elephants, and horses.
Who could slay Bhima in battle, who is equal to Drona and Arjuna in weapons, as swift as the wind, and in fury like Maheshvara?
Sanjaya, tell me of the mighty, unyielding Bhimasena, by whom, with his enemy-destroying power, all my sons are threatened.
By whose strength Yakshas and Rakshasas were once slain—how could any man withstand his force in battle?
Even in his youth, Sanjaya, he never submitted to me; how much less now, tormented by my wicked sons, will that Pandava yield?
Harsh and exceedingly wrathful, he would break but not bend; with sidelong glances and knit brows, how could Vrikodara ever be appeased?
He is valiant, unmatched in strength, towering like a tall palm; in stature, Bhimasena surpasses Arjuna by a span.
He outstrips horses in speed, overpowers elephants in strength; indistinct in speech, honey-eyed, the powerful middle Pandava.
Thus, in my youth, I once heard from Vyasa himself of the Pandava’s true form and might.
With his iron mace, in wrath, that fierce warrior will strike down chariots, elephants, men, and horses in battle.
Bhima, ever impetuous and unyielding, foremost among fighters, was once insulted by me, father, as he acted against me.
How will my sons withstand his massive, iron, thick, broad, golden mace, which thunders like a hundred destroyers?
