पृथग्भूताः पाण्डवानां पाञ्चालानां रथव्रजाः । आयान्तमभिनन्दन्ति कुन्तीपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम्
The divisions of chariots of the Pandavas and Panchalas, though separate, welcome Kunti's son Yudhishthira as he approaches.
नभः सूर्यमिवोद्यन्तं कौन्तेयं दीप्ततेजसम्। पाञ्चालाः प्रतिनन्दन्ति तेजोराशिमिवोदितम्
The Panchalas rejoice in the son of Kunti, radiant with splendor, as he rises like the sun in the sky, a mass of brilliance ascended.
आगोपालाविपालाश्च नन्दमाना युधिष्ठिरम् । पाञ्चालाः केकया मत्स्याः प्रतिनन्दति पाण्डवम्
Cowherds, shepherds, and those tending cattle, rejoicing, greet Yudhishthira; the Panchalas, Kekayas, and Matsyas also honor the Pandava.
ब्राह्मण्यो राजपुत्र्यश्च विशां दुहितरश्च याः। क्रीडन्त्योभिसमायान्ति पार्थं सन्नद्धमीक्षितुम्
Brahmin women, princesses, and daughters of the people, who are playing, come together to see Partha armed for battle.
सञ्जयाचक्ष्व येनास्मान्पाडवा अभ्ययुञ्जत। धृष्टद्युम्नस्य सैन्येन सोमकानां बलेन च
Sanjaya, tell us by whom the Pandavas were joined, with the army of Dhrishtadyumna and the force of the Somakas.
गवल्गणिस्तु तत्पुष्टः सभायां कुरुसंसदि। निःश्वस्य सुभृशं दीर्घं मुहुः सञ्चिन्तयन्निव
Gavalgana, strengthened by that, in the assembly of the Kurus, sighed deeply and repeatedly, as if lost in thought.
तत्रानिमित्ततो वैवात्सुतं कश्मलमाविशत्। तदाचचक्षे विदुरः सभायां राजसंसदि
There, without apparent cause, a confusion seized the son of Vivasvat; Vidura then spoke of it in the royal assembly.
सञ्जयोऽयं महाराज मूर्छितः पतितो भुवि। वाचं न सृजते कांचिद्धीनप्रज्ञोऽल्पचेतनः
Sanjaya, O great king, has fainted and fallen to the ground; he utters no word, his mind distressed and consciousness diminished.
अपश्यत्सञ्जयो नूनं कुन्तीपुत्रान्महारथान्। तैरस्य पुरुषव्याघ्रैर्भृशमुद्वेजितं मनः
Sanjaya surely saw the mighty sons of Kunti; his mind was greatly disturbed by those tiger-like men.
सञ्जयश्चेतनां लब्ध्वा प्रत्याश्वस्येदभब्रवीत्। धृतराष्ट्रं महाराज सभायां कुरुसंसदि
Regaining consciousness, Sanjaya, comforted, spoke to Dhritarashtra, O great king, in the assembly of the Kurus.
दृष्टवानस्मि राजेन्द्र कुन्तीपुत्रान्महारथान्। मत्स्यराजगृहावासनिरोधेनावकर्शितान्
I have seen, O king, the mighty sons of Kunti, drawn forth from the house of the king of the Matsyas.
श्रृणु र्यैर्हि महाराज पाण्डवा अभ्ययुञ्जत। धृष्टद्युम्नेन वीरेण युद्धे वस्तेऽभ्ययुञ्जत
Hear, O great king, by whom the Pandavas were joined; by the valiant Dhrishtadyumna, they were joined for battle.
यो नैव रोपान्न भयान्न लोभान्नार्थकारणात्। न हेतुवादाद्धर्मात्मा सत्यं जाह्यात्कदाचन
He who, for neither anger nor fear nor greed nor gain, nor for any reasoned argument, never abandons truth, being righteous.
यः प्रमाणं महाराज धर्मे धर्मभृतां वरः। अजातशत्रुणा तेन पाण्डवा अभ्ययुञ्जत
He who is the standard in righteousness, the foremost among upholders of dharma; by him, Ajatashatru, the Pandavas were joined.
यस्य बाहुबले तुल्यः पृथिव्यां नास्ति कश्चन। यो वै सर्वान्महीपालान्वशे चक्रे धनुर्धरः । यः काशीनङ्गमगधान्कलिङ्गांश्च युधाजयत्
He whose strength of arms is unmatched on earth; who subdued all the kings, wielding the bow; who conquered the Kashis, Angas, Magadhas, and Kalingas in battle.
तेन वो भीमसेनेन पाण्डवा अभ्ययुञ्जत। यस्य वीर्येण सहसा चत्वारो भुवि पाण्डवाः
By that Bhimasena, the Pandavas were joined; by whose might the four Pandavas swiftly acted on earth.
निःसृत्य जतुगेहाद्वै हिडिम्बात्पुरुषादकात्। यश्चैपामभवद्द्वीपः कुन्तीपुत्रो वृकोदरः
Escaping from the house of lac and from the man-eating Hidimba, he became their protector; Kunti's son, Vrikodara.
याज्ञसेनीमथो यत्र सिन्धुराजोपकृष्टवान्। तत्रैषामभवद्द्वीपः कुन्तीपुत्रो वृकोदरः
Where Yajnaseni was carried off by the king of Sindhu, there too he became their protector; Kunti's son, Vrikodara.
यश्च तान्सङ्गतान्सर्वान्पाण्डवान्वारणावते। दह्यतो मोचयामास तेन वस्तेऽभ्ययुञ्जत
He who rescued all the Pandavas gathered at Varanavata from the burning, by him they were joined for battle.
कृष्णायां चरता प्रीतिं येन क्रोधवशा हताः । प्रविश्य विषयं घोरं पर्वतं गन्धमादनम्
When Krishna was seeking joy, by whose wrath those were slain; entering the dreadful region, the Gandhamadana mountain.
यस्य नागायुतैर्वीर्यं भुजयोः सारमर्पितम् । तेन वो भीमसेनेन पाण्डवा अभ्ययुञ्जत
By him whose strength in his arms equals that of ten thousand elephants, Bhīmasena, the Pāṇḍavas have come forth against you.
कृष्णद्वितीयो विक्रम्य तुष्ट्यर्थं जातवेदसः। अजयद्यः पुरा वीरो युध्यमानं पुरन्दरम्
With Kṛṣṇa as his second, he who once, to please Agni, defeated the valiant Indra in battle—
यः स साक्षान्महादेवं गिरिशं शृलपाणिनम् । तोपयामास युद्धेन देवदेवमुपामपिम्
He who directly engaged in combat with the great god Maheśvara, Lord of Mountains, wielder of the trident, and matched the god of gods—
यश्च सर्वान्वशे चक्रे लोकपालान्धनुर्धरः। तेन वो विजयेनाजौ पाण्डवा अभ्ययुञ्जत
He who brought all the guardians of the worlds under his control with his bow—by that victorious one in battle, the Pāṇḍavas have come forth against you.
यः प्रतीचीं दिशं चक्रे वशे म्लेच्छगणायुताम्। स तत्र नकुलो योद्धा चित्रयोधी व्यवस्थितः
He who subdued the western direction, filled with countless hordes of Mlecchas—there stands Nakula, the distinguished warrior, ready for battle.
तेन वो दर्शनीयेन वीरेणातिधनुर्भृता । माद्रीपुत्रेण कौरव्य पाण्डवा अभ्ययुञ्जत
By that handsome hero, mighty wielder of the bow, the son of Mādrī, O Kauravya, the Pāṇḍavas have come forth against you.
यः काशीनङ्गमगधान्कलिङ्गांश्च युधाजयत्। तेन वः सहदेवेन पाण्डवा अभ्ययुञ्जत
He who conquered the kings of Kāśī, Aṅga, Magadha, and Kaliṅga in battle—by that Sahadeva, the Pāṇḍavas have come forth against you.
यस्य वीर्येण सदृशाश्चत्वारो भुवि मानवाः । अश्वत्थामा धृष्टकेतू रुक्मी प्रद्युम्न एव च
By whose valor only four men on earth are his equals: Aśvatthāman, Dhṛṣṭaketu, Rukmī, and Pradyumna—
तेन वः सहदेवेन युद्धं राजन्महात्ययमअ। यवीयसा नृवीरेण माद्रीनन्दिकरेण च
By that youthful, heroic Sahadeva, the joy of the Mādrī lineage, a great and fateful battle awaits you, O King.
तपश्चचार या घोरं काशिकन्या पुरा सती। भीष्मस्य वधमिच्छन्ती प्रेत्यापि भरतर्षभ
She who once performed terrible austerities, the maiden of Kāśī, desiring the death of Bhīṣma, even after death, O bull among the Bharatas—
