तदा मूढो धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्र- स्तप्ता युद्धे दुर्मतिर्दुःसहायः। दृष्ट्वा सैन्यं बाणवर्षान्धकारे प्रभज्यन्तं गोकुलवद्रणाग्रे
Then, that deluded son of Dhritarashtra, tormented in battle, ill-advised and poorly supported, will see his army, shattered by a rain of arrows and enveloped in darkness, breaking like a herd of cattle at the front of battle.
बलाहकादुच्चरतः सुभीमा- न्विद्युत्स्फुलिङ्गानिव घोररूपान्। सहस्रघ्नान्द्विषतां सङ्गरेषु अस्थिच्छिदो मर्मभिदः सुपुङ्खान्
From the bow, arrows will fly forth, terrifying as thunderbolts, like dreadful flashes of lightning from storm clouds—thousands at a time, bone-piercing, armor-breaking, well-feathered, striking the foes in battle.
यदा द्रष्टा ज्यामुखाद्बाणसङ्घान् गाण्डीवमुक्तानापततः शिताग्रान्। हयान्गजान्वर्मिणश्चाददानां- स्तदा युद्धं धार्तराष्ट्रोऽन्वतप्स्यत्
When he sees flights of sharp-tipped arrows, released from the Gandiva's string, falling upon horses, elephants, and armored warriors, then the son of Dhritarashtra will suffer in that battle.
यदा मन्दः परबाणान्विमुक्ता- न्ममेषुभिर्हियमाणान्प्रतीपम्। तिर्यग्विध्य च्छिद्यमानान्पृषत्कै- स्तदा युद्धं धार्तराष्ट्रोऽन्वतप्स्यत्
When that dullard sees the enemy's arrows, loosed and swiftly cut down by my shafts—split, pierced, and scattered crosswise—then the son of Dhritarashtra will suffer in that battle.
यदा विपाठा मद्भुजविप्रमुक्ता द्विजाः फलानीव महीरुहाग्रात्। प्रचेतार उत्तमाङ्गानि यूनां तदा युद्धं धार्तराष्ट्रोऽन्वतप्स्यत्
When the heads of the foremost warriors, released by my arm like fruits from the tops of trees, are scattered, then the son of Dhritarashtra will feel the heat of battle.
यदा द्रष्टा पततः स्यन्दनेभ्यो महागजेभ्योऽश्वगतान्सुयोधनान्। शरैर्हतान्पातितांश्चैव रङ्गे तदा युद्धं धार्तराष्ट्रोऽन्वतप्स्यत्
When he sees valiant fighters, fallen from their chariots, great elephants, and horses, struck down by arrows and lying dead on the field, then the son of Dhritarashtra will feel the heat of battle.
असंप्राप्तानस्त्रपथं परस्य यदा द्रष्टा नश्यतो धार्तराष्ट्रान्। अकुर्वतः कर्म युद्धे समन्ता- त्तदा युद्धं धार्तराष्ट्रोऽन्वतप्स्यत्
When he sees his men, unable to reach the path of weapons, perishing all around in battle, unable to act, then the son of Dhritarashtra will feel the heat of battle.
पदातिसङ्घान्रथसङ्घान्समन्ता- द्व्यात्ताननः काल इवाततेषुः। प्रणोत्स्यामि ज्वलितैर्बाणवर्षैः शत्रूंस्तदा तप्स्यति मन्दबुद्धिः
Like Time with gaping mouth, I will assail the masses of infantry and chariots on all sides, scattering them with blazing showers of arrows; then the dull-witted enemy will suffer.
सर्वा दिशः संपतता रथेन रजोध्वस्तं गाण्डिवेन प्रकृत्तम्। यदा द्रष्टा स्वबलं संप्रमूढं तदा पश्चात्तप्स्यति मन्दबुद्धिः
When he sees all directions filled with my chariot, the dust scattered, and his own bewildered army cut down by the Gandiva, then the dull-witted one will regret.
कान्दिग्भूतं छिन्नगात्रं विसंज्ञं दुर्योधनो द्रक्ष्यति सर्वसैन्यम्। हताश्ववीराग्र्यनरेन्द्रनागं पिपासितं श्रान्तपत्रं भयार्तम्
When Duryodhana sees his entire army turned to corpses, their limbs severed, unconscious, with slain horses, fallen heroes, broken kings and elephants, thirsty, exhausted, and terrified—
आर्तस्वरं हन्यमानं हतं च विकीर्णकेशास्थिकपालसङ्घम्। प्रजापतेः कर्म यथार्थनिष्ठितं तदा दृष्ट्वा तप्स्यति मन्दबुद्धिः
When he sees them crying out in pain, being struck down and killed, their hair, bones, and skulls scattered, as if fulfilling the work of the Creator, then the dull-witted one will suffer.
यदा रथे गाण्डिवं वासुदेवं दिव्यं शङ्खं पाञ्चजन्यं हयांश्च। तूणावक्षय्यौ देवदत्तं च मां च दृष्ट्वा युद्धे धार्तराष्ट्रोऽन्वतप्स्यत्
When the son of Dhritarashtra sees in battle the Gandiva on the chariot, Vasudeva, the divine conch Panchajanya, the inexhaustible quivers, Devadatta, and myself, then he will feel the heat of battle.
उद्वर्तयन्दस्युसङ्घान्समेतान् प्रवर्तयन्युगमन्यद्युगान्ते। यदा धक्ष्याम्यग्निवत्कौरवेयां- स्तदा तप्ता धृतराष्ट्रः सपुत्रः
When I rout these assembled bands of foes, turning the age as at the end of a yuga, and burn the Kauravas like fire, then Dhritarashtra and his sons will be scorched.
सभ्राता वै सहसैन्यः सभृत्यो भ्रष्टैश्वर्यः क्रोधवशोऽल्पचेताः। दर्पस्यान्ते निहतो वेपमानः पश्चान्मन्दस्तप्स्यति धार्तराष्ट्रः
With his brothers, army, and servants, deprived of his kingdom, overcome by anger and lacking sense, trembling, slain at the end of his pride, the dull-witted son of Dhritarashtra will regret.
पूर्वाह्णे मां कृतजप्यं कदाचि- द्विप्रः प्रोवाचोदकान्ते मनोज्ञम्। कर्तव्यं ते दुष्करं कर्म पार्थ योद्धव्यं कते शत्रुभिः सव्यसाचिन्
Once, in the morning, after my prayers, a Brahmin spoke to me by the water's edge, saying, 'A difficult task is set for you, Partha; you must fight these enemies, O Savyasacin.'
इन्द्रो वा ते हरिवान्वज्रहस्तः पुरस्ताद्यातु समरेऽरीन्विनिघ्नन्। सुग्रीवयुक्तेन रथेन वा ते पश्चात्कृष्णो रक्षतु वासुदेवः
May Indra, the wielder of the thunderbolt, go before you in battle, striking down your foes, or may you ride with a chariot yoked to noble steeds; behind you, may Krishna, Vasudeva, protect you.
वज्रे चाहं वज्रहस्तान्महेन्द्रा- दस्मिन्युद्धे वासुदेवं सहायम्। स मे लब्धो दस्युवधाय कृष्णो मन्ये चेतद्विहितं दैवतेर्मे
In this battle, I am the thunderbolt among those who wield the thunderbolt, with Vasudeva as my ally, like mighty Indra. Krishna has been gained by me for the destruction of foes; I believe this is ordained by the gods for me.
अयुद्ध्यमानो मनसापि यस्य जयं कृष्णः पुरुषस्याभिनन्देत्। एवं सर्वान्स व्यतीयादमित्रान् सेन्द्रान्देवान्मानुषे नास्ति चिन्ता
He for whom Krishna desires victory, even if he does not fight or even think of battle, will overcome all enemies, including gods with Indra; in the world of men, there is no doubt.
स बाहुभ्यां सागरमुत्तितीर्षे- न्महोदधिं सलिलस्याप्रमेयम्। तेजस्विनं कृष्णमत्यन्तशूरं युद्धेन यो वासुदेवं जिगीषेत्
He who would try to cross the boundless ocean with his arms, or who would seek to conquer Krishna, the most valiant and heroic, in battle—
गिरिं य इच्छेत्तु तलेन भेत्तुं शिलोच्चयं श्वेतमतिप्रमाणम्। तस्यैव पाणिः सनखो विशीर्ये- न्न चापि किञ्चित्स गिरेस्तु कुर्यात्
He who wishes to shatter a great white mountain with his bare hand, his fingers would break but he would do nothing to the mountain.
अग्निं समिद्धं शमयेद्भुजाभ्यां चन्द्रं च सूर्यं च निवारयेत। हरेद्देवानाममृतं प्रसह्य युद्धेन यो वासुदेवं जिगीषेत्
He who would try to extinguish blazing fire with his arms, or stop the moon and sun, or seize the gods' nectar by force—such is the one who seeks to conquer Vasudeva in battle.
यो रुक्मिणीमेकरथेन भोज- नुत्साद्य राज्ञः समरे प्रसह्य। उवाह भार्यां यशसा ज्वलन्तीं यस्यां जज्ञे रौक्मिणेयो महात्मा
He who, with a single chariot, defeated the Bhojas and the king in battle, and carried off Rukmini, radiant in fame, from whom was born the great-souled son of Rukmini—
अयं गान्धारांस्तरसा संप्रमथ्य जित्वा पुत्रान्नग्नजितः समग्रान् बद्धं मुमोच विनदन्तं प्रसह्य सुदर्शनं वै देवतानां ललामम्
He swiftly subdued Gandhara, conquered all the sons of Nagnajit, released Sudarshana who was bound and crying out, and seized the diadem of the gods.
अयं कवाटे निजघान पाण्ड्यं तथा कलिङ्गान्दन्तवक्रं ममर्द। अनेन दग्धा वर्षपूगान्विनाथा वाराणसी नगरी संबभूव
He struck down the Pandya at the gate, crushed the king of Kalinga and Dantavakra; by him, the city of Varanasi was burned and left desolate for many years.
अयं स्म युद्धे मन्यतेऽन्यैरजेयं तमेकलव्यं नाम निषादराजम्। वेगेनैव शैलमभिहत्य जम्भः शेते स कृष्णेन हतः परासुः
In battle, he was thought by others to be invincible; he slew Ekalavya, the king of the Nishadas, with force, just as Jambha struck a mountain, and he lay dead, his life ended by Krishna.
तथोग्रसेनस्य सुतं सुदुष्टं वृष्ण्यन्धकानां मध्यगतं सभास्थम्। अपातयद्बलदेवद्वितीयो हत्वा ददौ चोग्रसेनाय राज्यम्
He cast down the wicked son of Ugrasena, seated in the assembly among the Vrishnis and Andhakas; after slaying him, he gave the kingdom back to Ugrasena.
अयं सौभं योधयामास स्वस्थं विभीषणं मायया साल्वराजम्। सौभद्वारि प्रत्यगृह्णाच्छतघ्नीं दोर्भ्यां क एनं विषहेत मर्त्यः
He fought against Saubha, the king of Salva, who used illusions; at the gate of Saubha, he caught the hundred-slaying weapon in his hands—what mortal could withstand him?
प्राग्ज्योतिषं नाम बभूव दुर्गं पुरं घोरमसुराणामसह्यम्। महाबलो नरकस्तत्र भौमो जहारादित्या मणिकुण्डले शुभे
There was a fortress called Pragjyotisha, a dreadful city of the unconquerable asuras; the mighty Bhauma, Naraka, there seized the radiant earrings of the sun.
न तं देवाः सह शक्रेण शेकुः समागता युधि मृत्योरभीताः । दृष्ट्वा च तं विक्रमं केशवस्य बलं तथैवास्त्रमवारणीयम्
The gods, even with Indra, could not defeat him in battle, though they were fearless of death; seeing the valor, strength, and unstoppable weapons of Kesava, they were awed.
जानन्तोऽस्य प्रकृतिं केशवस्य न्ययोजयन्दस्युवधाय कृष्णम्। स तत्कर्म प्रतिशुश्राव दुष्कर- मैश्वर्यवान्सिद्धिषु वासुदेवः
Knowing the nature of Kesava, they engaged Krishna to slay the demon; Vasudeva accomplished that difficult task, possessing mastery and success in all powers.
