आमन्त्रये त्वां नरदेवदेव गच्छाम्यहं पाण्डव स्वस्ति तेऽस्तु। कच्चिन्न वाचा वृजिनं हि किंचि- दुच्चारितं मे मनसोऽभिषङ्गात्
I bid you farewell, O king of kings; I depart now, O son of Pandu—may you fare well. I hope I have not spoken any word, out of agitation of mind, that is wrongful or improper.
जनार्दनं भीमसेनार्जुनौ च माद्रीसुतौ सात्यकिं चेकितानम् । आमन्त्र्य गच्छामि शिवं सुखं वः सौम्येन मां पश्यत चक्षुषा नृपाः
I take leave of Janardana, Bhimasena, Arjuna, the sons of Madri, Satyaki, and Chekitana; I depart, wishing you all well and happiness—O kings, look upon me with gentle eyes.
अनुज्ञातः सञ्जय स्वस्ति गच्छ न नः स्मरस्यप्रियं जातु विद्वन्। विद्मश्च त्वां ते च वयं च सर्वे शुद्धात्मानं मध्यगतं सभास्थम्
Permission is granted, Sanjaya—go in peace. You have never spoken anything unpleasant to us, O wise one. We all know you, and you know us, as one pure in heart, impartial, and present in the assembly.
आप्तो दूतः सञ्जय सुप्रियोऽसि कल्याणवाक् शीलवांस्तृप्तिमांश्च। न मुह्येस्त्वं सञ्जय जातु मत्या न च क्रुद्ध्येरुच्यमानोऽपि तत्त्वम्
You are a trusted messenger, Sanjaya, most dear, speaking auspicious words, virtuous and content. You never lose clarity of thought, Sanjaya, nor do you become angry even when your words are opposed.
न मर्मगां जातु वक्ताऽसि रूक्षां नोपश्रुतिं कटुकां नोति शुष्काम्। धर्मारामामर्थवतीमहिंस्रा- मेतां वाचं तव जानीम सूत
You never speak words that wound, nor utter harsh, bitter, or dry speech. Your words, O charioteer, are righteous, meaningful, and harmless—we know this well.
त्वमेव नः प्रियतमोऽसि दूत इहागच्छेद्विदुरो वा द्वितीयः। अभीक्ष्णदृष्टोऽसि पुरातनस्त्वं धनञ्जयस्यात्मसमः सखाऽसि
You alone are our dearest messenger; if not you, let Vidura come as the second. You are often seen, of old acquaintance, and you are a friend to Dhananjaya as dear as his own self.
इतो गत्वा सञ्जय क्षिप्रमेव उपातिष्ठेथा ब्राह्मणान्ये तदर्हाः। विशुद्धवीर्याश्चरणोपपन्नाः कुले जाताः सर्वधर्मापपन्नाः
Go from here quickly, Sanjaya, and approach those Brahmins who are worthy of respect—whose strength is pure, who possess good conduct, who are born in noble families, and who are established in all virtues.
स्वाध्यायिनो ब्राह्मणा भिक्षवश्च तपस्विनो ये च नित्या वनेषु । अभिवाद्य तान्मद्वचनेन वृद्धां- स्तथैव तान्कुशलं तात पृच्छेः
The Brahmins who study the scriptures, the mendicants, the ascetics who always dwell in the forests—greet them on my behalf, and likewise inquire after the welfare of those elders.
पुरोहितं धृतराष्ट्रस्य राज्ञ- स्तथाचार्यानृत्विजो ये च तस्य। तांश्चैवत्वं सहितान्वै यथावत् सङ्गच्छेथाः कुशलेनैव सूत
The priest of King Dhritarashtra, his teachers, and the officiating priests—meet all of them together, as is proper, and greet them courteously, O charioteer.
अश्रोत्रिया ये च वसन्ति वृद्धा मनस्विनः शीलबलोपपन्नाः । आशंसन्तोऽस्माकमनुस्मरन्तो यथाशक्ति धर्ममात्रां चरन्तः
Those elderly men who dwell there, though not versed in the Vedas, who are thoughtful and endowed with virtue and strength, who hope for us and remember us, and who practice whatever measure of righteousness they can—
तेषां सर्वषां कुशलं स्म पृच्छेः
Ask after the welfare of all of them.
आचार्य इष्टो नयगो विधेयो वेदानभीप्सन्ब्रह्मचर्यं चचार। योऽस्त्रं चतुष्पात्पुनरेव चक्रे द्रोणः प्रसन्नोऽभिवाद्यस्त्वयासौ
The teacher who is esteemed, skilled in guiding, and obedient to duty, who pursued brahmacharya desiring the Vedas, who again mastered the fourfold weaponry—Drona, who is gracious, should be greeted by you.
अधीतविद्यश्चरणोपपन्नो योऽस्त्रं चतुष्पात्पुनरेव चक्रे। गन्धर्वपुत्रप्रतिमं तरस्विनं तमश्वत्थामानं कुशलं स्म पृच्छेः
He who is learned, possessed of good conduct, who again mastered the fourfold weaponry, who is swift like the son of a Gandharva—ask after the welfare of Ashvatthama.
शारद्वतस्यावसथं स्म गत्वा महारथस्यात्मविदां वरस्य। त्वं मामभीक्ष्णं परिकीर्तयन्वै कृपस्य पादौ सञ्जय पाणिना स्पृशेः
Go to the residence of Sharadvata, the great chariot-warrior, foremost among the self-knowing; repeatedly mention me there, and touch the feet of Kripa with your hand, O Sanjaya.
यस्मिन्शौर्यमानृशंस्यं तपश्च प्रज्ञा शीलं श्रुतरूपे धृतिश्च। पादौ गृहीत्वा कुरुसत्तमस्य भीष्मस्य मां तत्र निवेदयेथाः
In whom courage, compassion, asceticism, wisdom, virtue, learning, and steadfastness are manifest—having grasped the feet of Bhishma, the best of the Kurus, convey my regards there.
प्रज्ञाचक्षुर्यः प्रणेता कुरूणां बहुश्रुतो वृद्धसेवी मनीषी। तस्मै राज्ञे स्थविरायाभिवाद्य आचक्षीथाः सञ्जय मामरोगम्
He whose wisdom is the eye, who is the leader of the Kurus, learned in many things, who serves the elders, who is thoughtful—having greeted that aged king, tell him, Sanjaya, that I am well.
ज्येष्ठः पुत्रो धृतराष्ट्रस्य मन्दो मूर्खः शठः सञ्जय पापशीलः। यस्यापवादः पृथिवीं याति सर्वां सुयोधनं कुशलं तात पृच्छेः
The eldest son of Dhritarashtra, dull-witted, foolish, deceitful, of wicked conduct, whose infamy spreads throughout the whole earth—ask after the welfare of Suyodhana, O dear one.
भ्राता कनीयानपि तस्य मन्द- स्तथाशीलः सञ्जय सोपि शश्वत्। महेष्वासः शूरतमः कुरूणां दुःशासनः कुशलं तात वाच्यः
His younger brother, also dull-witted and of similar character, always so, a great archer, bravest among the Kurus—Duḥśāsana, ask after his welfare, O dear one.
यस्य कामो वर्तते नित्यमेव नान्यः शमाद्भारतानामिति स्म। स बाह्लिकानामृषभो मनीषी पुनर्यथा माऽभिवदेत्प्रसन्नः
He whose desire always prevails, and none other is peaceful among the Bharatas—he is the wise leader of the Bahlikas; again, greet him as he is pleased.
भूरिश्रवास्तात निपातयोधी महेष्वासो रथिनामुत्तमोऽग्र्यः । गत्वा स्म तं मद्वचनेन ब्रूयाः शल्यं तथा मद्वचनात्प्रतीतः
Bhuriśravas, O dear one, the renowned warrior, great archer, foremost among chariot-warriors—go to him and speak my words; likewise, greet Shalya on my behalf.
स्तेषां सर्वेषां कुशलं तात पृच्छेः
Ask after the welfare of all of them, O dear one.
गुणैरनेकैः प्रवरैश्च युक्तो विज्ञानवान्नैव च निष्ठुरो यः। स्नेहादमर्षं सहते सदैव स सोमदत्तः पूजनीयो मतो मे
He who is endowed with many virtues and excellent qualities, who is wise and never harsh, who always endures anger out of affection—that Somadatta is worthy of honor in my view.
अर्हत्तमः कुरुषु सौमदत्तिः स नो भ्राता संजय मत्सखा च। महेष्वासो रथिनामुत्तमोऽर्हः सहामात्यः कुशलं तस्य पृच्छेः
The most worthy among the Kurus, Saumadatti, who is our brother, Sanjaya, and my friend, a great archer, foremost among chariot-warriors, deserving honor—ask after his welfare together with his ministers.
ये चैवान्ये कुरुमुख्या युवानः पुत्राः पौत्रा भ्रातरश्चैव ये नः। यंयमेषां मन्यसे येन योग्यं तत्तत्प्रोच्यानामयं सूत वाच्याः
And all other chief youths among the Kurus—sons, grandsons, brothers of ours—whomever among them you consider suitable, speak to each accordingly, O charioteer.
ये राजानः पाण्डवायोधनाय समानीता धार्तराष्ट्रेण केचित्। वशातयः साल्वकाः केकयाश्च तथाम्बष्ठा ये त्रिगर्ताश्च मुख्याः
Those kings who have been gathered by Dhritarashtra's son for battle against the Pandavas—some are vassals, some are from Salva and Kekaya, as well as the Ambaṣṭhas and the chief Trigartas—
प्राच्योदीच्या दाक्षिण्यात्याश्च शूरा- स्तथा प्रतीच्याः पार्वतीयाश्च सर्वे। अनृशंसाः शीलवृत्तोपुन्ना- स्तेषां सर्वेषां कुशलं सूत पृच्छेः
And the valiant ones from the eastern, northern, southern, and western regions, as well as those from the mountains—all of them, known for their compassion and noble conduct—ask after the welfare of them all, O charioteer.
हस्त्यारोहा रथिनः सादिनश्च पदातयश्चार्यसङ्घा महान्तः। आख्याय मां कुशलिनं स्म नित्य- मनामयं परिपृच्छेः समग्रान्
The elephant-riders, chariot-warriors, cavalry, and great companies of infantry—announce that I am well to them, and inquire fully about their well-being and health.
तथा राज्ञो ह्यर्थयुक्तानमात्यान् दौवारिकान्ये च सेनां नयन्ति। आयव्ययं ये गमयन्ति नित्य- मर्थांश्च ये महतश्चिन्तयन्ति
Likewise, the king’s ministers skilled in policy, the gatekeepers, those who command the army, those who manage income and expenditure, and those who continually consider important matters—
वृन्दारकं कुरुमध्येष्वमूढं महाप्रज्ञं सर्वधर्मोपपन्नम् । न तस्य युद्धं रोचते वै कदाचि- द्वैश्यापुत्रं कुशलं तात पृच्छेः
Vrindaraka, wise and steadfast among the Kurus, endowed with all virtues—he never delights in war; ask after the welfare of that son of a merchant, dear one.
निकर्तने देवने योऽद्वितीय- श्छन्नोपधः साधुदेवी मताक्षः। यो दुर्जयो देवरथेन सङ्ख्ये स चित्रसेनः कुशलं तात वाच्यः
He who is unrivaled in cutting down and slaying, who is skilled in hidden stratagems and is a master of dice, who is invincible in battle with the gods—convey my regards to Citraseṇa and ask after his welfare, dear one.
