Without understanding this dharma in the assembly, you wish to instruct the Pandava; Krishna performed this pure act, exceedingly difficult, having entered the assembly.
By which, with great effort, she rescued the Pandavas and herself, like a boat from the flood of the ocean; where the son of the charioteer spoke to Krishna, standing in the assembly near her fathers-in-law.
You have no way, O Yajnaseni; you must enter the house of Dhritarashtra; your husbands are defeated, they are not your protectors—choose another husband, O beautiful one.
That arrow, dreadful and sharp, which was fixed in Bhimasena's heart, striking bone and vital parts, or the arrow of Karna, fierce and terrifying, was lodged in Arjuna's heart.
As they tried to put on the deerskins, Duhshasana spoke harsh words; all these are eunuchs, destroyed, gone to ruin, and will dwell in hell for a long time.
Such blameworthy speech was uttered during the game of dice.
I myself wish to go there to resolve this failed matter; you know the delusion of Dhritarashtra's son, evil-minded and led by sin.
If, after restoring the Pandavas' cause, I could bring peace among the Kurus, then great merit would be mine, and the Kurus would be freed from the noose of death.
If, as I speak these words—righteous, meaningful, and harmless—the sons of Dhritarashtra would heed them in your presence, and the Kurus would honor me upon my arrival,
Otherwise, know that the sons of Dhritarashtra, intoxicated by power, will be consumed by their own evil deeds at the hands of Arjuna, the charioteer, and Bhima, eager for battle.
If the sons of Pandu are defeated, Duryodhana will speak harsh and cruel words; but Bhimasena, steadfast and armed with his mace, will remind Duryodhana of his promise at the proper time.
Suyodhana is a great tree made of anger; Karna is its trunk, and Shakuni its branches; Duhshasana is its abundant fruit, and its root is King Dhritarashtra, lacking discernment.
Yudhishthira is a great tree made of righteousness; Arjuna is its trunk, Bhimasena and his brothers are its branches; the sons of Madri are its abundant flowers and fruits; I, along with Brahma and the Brahmanas, am its root.
King Dhritarashtra and his sons are the forest, O Sanjaya, and the Pandavas are the lions in that forest; a forest protected by lions does not perish, nor does a lion perish when protected by the forest.
A lion without a forest is slain, and a forest without a lion is destroyed; therefore, let the lion protect the forest, and let the forest safeguard the lion.
King Dhritarashtra is the forest, and the Pandavas are the tigers within it; do not destroy the forest along with its tigers, for tigers cannot survive without the forest.
A tiger without a forest is slain, and a forest without tigers is cut down; therefore, let the tiger protect the forest, and let us safeguard the tiger.
The sons of Dhritarashtra are like creepers, and the Pandavas, O Sanjaya, are the great trees; a creeper can never grow without clinging to a great tree.
The sons of Pritha stand ready to serve, and these mighty warriors stand ready to fight; let King Dhritarashtra do what is proper for a ruler.
The great-souled Pandavas, followers of righteousness, are steadfast in peace; their warriors are capable—O wise one, do not misreport the truth.
I bid you farewell, O king of kings; I depart now, O son of Pandu—may you fare well. I hope I have not spoken any word, out of agitation of mind, that is wrongful or improper.
I take leave of Janardana, Bhimasena, Arjuna, the sons of Madri, Satyaki, and Chekitana; I depart, wishing you all well and happiness—O kings, look upon me with gentle eyes.
Permission is granted, Sanjaya—go in peace. You have never spoken anything unpleasant to us, O wise one. We all know you, and you know us, as one pure in heart, impartial, and present in the assembly.
You are a trusted messenger, Sanjaya, most dear, speaking auspicious words, virtuous and content. You never lose clarity of thought, Sanjaya, nor do you become angry even when your words are opposed.
You never speak words that wound, nor utter harsh, bitter, or dry speech. Your words, O charioteer, are righteous, meaningful, and harmless—we know this well.
You alone are our dearest messenger; if not you, let Vidura come as the second. You are often seen, of old acquaintance, and you are a friend to Dhananjaya as dear as his own self.
Go from here quickly, Sanjaya, and approach those Brahmins who are worthy of respect—whose strength is pure, who possess good conduct, who are born in noble families, and who are established in all virtues.
The Brahmins who study the scriptures, the mendicants, the ascetics who always dwell in the forests—greet them on my behalf, and likewise inquire after the welfare of those elders.
The priest of King Dhritarashtra, his teachers, and the officiating priests—meet all of them together, as is proper, and greet them courteously, O charioteer.
Those elderly men who dwell there, though not versed in the Vedas, who are thoughtful and endowed with virtue and strength, who hope for us and remember us, and who practice whatever measure of righteousness they can—
