I hear of a weapon made by Drona, Arjuna, Vasudeva, Kripa, and Bhishma. That one, whom they call the equal of Karshni, is Satyaki, who has joined for the Pandavas.
The Cedis, Karushas, and Kashis have gathered, all the kings united in every effort. Among them, shining like the sun, adorned with splendor, stands the blazing lord of the Cedis.
He is considered the best in battle, the foremost among those who draw the bowstring on earth. Having vanquished the enthusiasm of all the Kshatriyas, Krishna crushed them forcefully with his speed.
Increasing the honor of the Pandavas, he once struck down Shishupala, as witnessed. All the kings, led by the Karusha ruler, then increased his honor.
Considering Krishna there to be unconquerable, others fled, leaving the lord of the Cedis, as weak animals flee from a lion, seeing Krishna with his powerful chariot.
Whoever, trusting in his strength, opposed Vasudeva in single combat, seeking glory, lay slain by Krishna, his life departed, like a Karnikara tree uprooted by the wind.
When they informed me of Krishna's prowess for their cause, Sanjaya, remembering the deeds of Vishnu, I find no peace, like a horse with a loose rein.
No other enemy could withstand those for whom the lion of the Vrishnis is chief. My heart trembles with fear, hearing that Krishna and Arjuna have united in a single chariot.
If my son, dull-witted, does not go to seek alliance with those two, then he should obtain a shield; otherwise, Sanjaya, if he does not burn the Kurus, Indra and Vishnu will destroy the demon army in the same way.
In my opinion, Dhananjaya is equal to Shakra; the eternal hero of the Vrishnis is Vishnu; devoted to righteousness, modesty, and vigor, the son of Kunti, the Pandava, is Ajatashatru.
If the noble-minded Duryodhana, deceived, does not burn with anger and destroy the sons of Dhritarashtra, then I do not fear Arjuna, Vasudeva, Bhima, or the sons of Yama.
Just as I am always most afraid of the king when his wrath blazes, O charioteer, so too, endowed with great austerity and devoted to celibacy, his mental resolve will surely succeed.
Seeing his anger, Sanjaya, I am today greatly frightened, knowing it is justified; go quickly, dispatched by chariot, to the encampment of the Panchala king's army.
You should repeatedly ask after the welfare of Ajatashatru, speaking with affection; and, O dear one, after meeting Janardana, the great minister, noble among the mighty, address him as well.
Ask after their well-being on my behalf, saying that Dhritarashtra desires peace with the Pandavas; the son of Kunti, the Pandava, will not disregard any word of Vasudeva, O charioteer.
Krishna is dear to them, like their own self, wise, always devoted to action; he has brought together the Pandavas, the Sringayas, Janardana, Yuyudhana, and Virata.
He will not lose consciousness, nor is he the cause of war.
Having heard the words of King Dhritarashtra, Sanjaya went to Upaplavya to see the Pandavas, whose strength was immeasurable.
Having approached King Yudhishthira, son of Kunti, Sanjaya, the son of a charioteer, first offered his respects and then spoke.
Gavalgani Sanjaya, son of a charioteer, confidently addressed Ajatashatru: 'By fortune, O king, I see you healthy, surrounded by companions, and resembling the great Indra.'
Ambika's son, the aged and wise King Dhritarashtra, asks after your well-being; is Bhima, the foremost Pandava, well, and is Dhananjaya, as well as the two sons of Madri?
Is Krishna, Draupadi, the royal princess, true to her vows, wife of heroes, and blessed with noble sons, well? Wherever you desire, O Bharata, may you obtain your wishes, for I wish you prosperity.
O Gavalgani Sanjaya, you are welcome; with a joyful heart, I greet you, O charioteer; I assure you of my well-being, and together with my brothers, I am well, O wise one.
After a long time, hearing of the welfare of Bharata from the aged king, O charioteer, I feel as if I have seen the king himself, for seeing you, Sanjaya, brings me joy.
Our grandfather, aged and wise, endowed with great wisdom and all virtues, is well, O dear one; Bhishma, together with the Kauravas, is well. Is his conduct as before?
Is King Dhritarashtra, together with his son, the great-souled descendant of Vichitravirya, well? Is the great king Bahlika, son of Pratipa, well? Is the wise son of the charioteer well?
Is Somadatta well, dear one? And is Bhurishravas, steadfast in truth, and Shala also in good health? Is Drona with his son, and Kripa the Brahmin, those great archers—are they all unharmed?
O Sanjaya, do all the foremost bowmen on earth, those of great wisdom and pure in all the sciences, who are the chief among archers in the world, still cherish the Kurus?
Are these archers, dear one, still respected and in good health? In whose kingdom resides the illustrious, virtuous son of Drona, the great archer?
Is the son of a Vaishya, the wise prince Yuyutsu, well, dear one? And is Karna, proud and mighty, in good health, dear one, he to whom the slow-witted Suyodhana is obedient?
