दोषं ह्येषां नाध्यगच्छं परीच्छ- न्सूक्ष्मं कंचिद्येन गर्हेय पार्थान्। धर्मार्थाभ्यां कर्म कुर्वन्ति नित्यं सुखप्रिये नानुरुध्यन्ति कामात्
Examining them closely, I have found no fault in them by which I could reproach the sons of Pritha. They always act for righteousness and profit, and do not pursue pleasure out of desire.
धर्मं शीतं क्षुत्पिपासे तथैव निद्रां तन्द्रीं क्रोधहर्षौ प्रमादम्। धृत्या चैव प्रज्ञया चाभिभूय धर्मार्थयोगान्प्रयतन्ति पार्थाः
The sons of Pritha, by steadfastness and wisdom, overcome cold, hunger and thirst, sleep, fatigue, anger, delight, and carelessness, and strive for the union of righteousness and profit.
र्दुर्योधनात्क्षुद्रतराच्च कर्णात्
Duryodhana is more base, and Karna even more so.
पुत्रो मह्यं मृत्युवशं जगाम दुर्योधनः सञ्जय रागबुद्धिः।' तेषां हीमौ हीनसुखप्रियाणां महात्मनां संजनयतो हि तेजः
My son Duryodhana, Sanjaya, driven by passion, has come under the power of death. The brilliance of those great souls, who are not attached to pleasure, is thus kindled.
उत्थानवीर्यः सुखमेधमानो दुर्योधः सुकृतं मन्यते तत्। तेषां भागं यच्च मन्येत बालः शक्यं हर्तुं जीवतां पाण्डवानाम्
Duryodhana, thinking himself energetic and strong, believes he is enjoying happiness by his own merit. But whatever share a child might think to take from the living Pandavas, it cannot be seized.
यस्यार्जुनः पदवीं केशवश्च वृकोदरः सात्यकोऽजातशत्रोः । माद्रीपुत्रौ सृञ्जयाश्चापि यान्ति पुरा युद्धात्साधु तस्य प्रदानम्
He whose path is followed by Arjuna, by Keshava, by Bhima, by Satyaki, by the sons of Madri, and by the Srinjayas—truly, it is right to grant him what he seeks before battle.
सह्येवैकः पृथिवीं सव्यसाची गाण्डीवधन्वा प्रणुदेद्रथस्थः। तथा जिष्णुः केशवोऽप्यप्रधृष्यो लोकत्रयस्याधिपतिर्महात्मा
Alone, Arjuna, the left-handed archer, standing on his chariot with the Gandiva bow, could conquer the earth. Likewise, Jishnu—Krishna—is invincible, the great-souled lord of the three worlds.
तिष्ठेत कस्तस्य मर्त्यः पुरस्ता- द्यः सर्वलोकेषु वरेण्य एकः। पर्जन्यघोषान्प्रवपञ्शरौघा- न्पतङ्गसङ्घानिव शीघ्रवेगान्
Who among mortals could stand before him—he who is unique and honored in all the worlds—when he sends forth volleys of arrows with the roar of thunderclouds, swift as swarms of locusts?
दिशं ह्युदीचीमपि चोत्तरान्कुरून् गाण्डीवधन्वैकरथो जिगाय। धनं चैपामाहरत्सव्यसाची सेनानुगान्द्रविडांश्चैव चक्रे
Even in the northern direction, among the northern Kurus, the lone chariot-warrior with the Gandiva bow conquered; and Arjuna brought wealth, followers, and Dravidian kings.
यश्चैव देवान्खाण्डवे सव्यसाची गाण्डीवधन्वा प्रजिगाय सेन्द्रान्। उपाहरत्पाण्डवो जातवेदसे यशो मानं वर्धयन्पाण्डवानाम्
And Arjuna, the left-handed archer, who defeated the gods and Indra at Khandava, brought offerings to Agni, increasing the fame and honor of the Pandavas.
गदाभृतां नास्ति समोऽत्र भीमा- द्धस्त्यारोहो नास्ति समश्च तस्य। रथेऽर्जुनादाहुरहीनमेनं बाह्वोर्वलेनायुतनागवीर्यम्
Among those who wield the mace, none here is equal to Bhima; in mounting elephants, none matches him. On the chariot, they say he is second only to Arjuna. In the strength of his arms, he possesses the might of ten thousand elephants.
सुशिक्षितः कृतवैरस्तरस्वी दहेत्क्षुद्रांस्तरसा धार्तराष्ट्रान् । सदाऽत्यमर्षी न वलात्स शक्यो युद्धे जेतुं वासवेनापि साक्षात्
Well-trained, fierce in enmity, and swift, he could burn the weak Dhartarashtras with his speed. Always intolerant, he cannot be overcome by strength, not even by Indra himself in battle.
सुतेजसौ वलिनौ शीघ्रहस्तौ सुशिक्षितौ भ्रातरौ फाल्गुनेन। श्येनौ यथा पक्षिपूगान्रुजन्तौ माद्रीपुत्रौ शेपयेतां न शत्रून्
The two brothers, sons of Madri, are radiant, strong, quick-handed, and well-trained, together with Phalguna. Like hawks striking flocks of birds, the sons of Madri would not spare their enemies.
एतद्बलं पूर्णमस्माकमेवं यत्सत्यं तान्प्राप्य नास्तीति मन्ये। तेषां मध्ये वर्तमानस्तरस्वी धृष्टद्युम्नः पाण्डवानामिहैकः
Such is the fullness of our strength, Sanjaya; I believe that, having gained these allies, there is nothing lacking. Among them stands the energetic Dhrishtadyumna, the sole leader of the Pandavas here.
सहामात्यः सोमकानां प्रबर्हः सन्त्यक्तात्मा पाण्डवार्थे श्रुतो मे। अजातशत्रुं प्रसहेत कोऽन्यो येषां स स्यादग्रणीर्वृष्णिसिंह
With his ministers, the foremost among the Somakas, he has renounced his life for the sake of the Pandavas, as I have heard. Who else could withstand Ajatashatru, for whom the lion of the Vrishnis would be the chief?
सहोषितश्चरितार्थो वयस्थो मात्स्येयानामधिपो वै विराटः। स वै सपुत्रः पाण्डवार्थे च शश्व- द्युधिष्ठिरे भक्त इति श्रुतं मे
Having lived together and fulfilled his purpose, the aged king of the Matsyas, Virata, is present. With his sons, for the sake of the Pandavas, he is ever devoted to Yudhishthira, as I have heard.
अवरुद्धा रथिनः केकयेभ्यो महेष्वासा भ्रातरः पञ्च सन्ति। केकयेभ्यो राज्यमाकाङ्क्षमाणा युद्धार्थिनश्रानुवसन्ति पार्थान्
The five mighty-armed brothers, skilled with great bows, are surrounded by charioteers from the Kekayas. Desiring the kingdom from the Kekayas, seeking battle, they follow the sons of Pritha.
सर्वांश्च वीरान्पृथिवीपतीनां समागतान्पाण्डवार्थे निविष्टान्। शूरानहं भक्तिमतः शृणोमि प्रीत्या युक्तान्संश्रितान्धर्मराजन्
All the heroic kings of the earth, assembled and settled for the sake of the Pandavas, I hear of these valiant, devoted ones, joined together in affection, who have taken refuge with the king of dharma.
गिर्याश्रया दुर्गनिवासिनश्च योधाः पृथिव्यां कुलजातिशुद्धाः। म्लेच्छाश्च नानायुधवीर्यवन्तः समागताः पाण्डवार्थे निविष्टाः
Warriors dwelling in the mountains and fortresses, pure in lineage and birth, and also mlecchas, possessing various weapons and valor, have assembled and taken their stand for the Pandavas.
पाण्ड्यश्च राजा समितीन्द्रकल्पो योधप्रवीरैर्बहुभिः समेतः। समागतः पाण्डवार्थे महात्मा लोकप्रवीरोऽप्रतिवीर्यतेजाः
The Pandya king, equal to Indra among commanders, has come with many distinguished warriors. The great-souled one, renowned among men, has joined for the Pandavas, his strength and brilliance unmatched.
अस्त्रं द्रोणादर्जुनाद्वासुदेवा- त्कृपाद्भीष्माद्येन कृतं शृणोमि। यं तं कार्ष्णिप्रतिममाहुरेकं स सात्यकिः पाण्डवार्थे निविष्टः
I hear of a weapon made by Drona, Arjuna, Vasudeva, Kripa, and Bhishma. That one, whom they call the equal of Karshni, is Satyaki, who has joined for the Pandavas.
उपाश्रिताश्चेदिकरूशकाश्च सर्वोद्योगैर्भूमिपालाः समेताः। तेषां मध्ये सूर्यमिवातपन्तं श्रिया वृतं चेदिपतिं ज्वलन्तम्
The Cedis, Karushas, and Kashis have gathered, all the kings united in every effort. Among them, shining like the sun, adorned with splendor, stands the blazing lord of the Cedis.
अस्तम्भनीयं युधि मन्यमान्यो ज्यां कर्षतां श्रेष्ठतमं पृथिव्याम् । सर्वोत्साहं क्षत्रियाणां निहत्य प्रसह्य कृष्णस्तरसा संममर्द
He is considered the best in battle, the foremost among those who draw the bowstring on earth. Having vanquished the enthusiasm of all the Kshatriyas, Krishna crushed them forcefully with his speed.
यशोमानौ वर्धयन्पाण्डवानां पुराऽभिनच्छिशुपालं समीक्ष्य। यस्य सर्वे वर्धयन्ति स्म मानं करूशराजप्रमुखा नरेन्द्राः
Increasing the honor of the Pandavas, he once struck down Shishupala, as witnessed. All the kings, led by the Karusha ruler, then increased his honor.
तमसह्यं केशवं तत्र मत्वा सुग्रीवयुक्तेन रथेन कृष्णम्। संप्राद्रवंश्चेदिपतिं विहाय सिंहं दृष्ट्वा क्षुद्रमृगा इवान्ये
Considering Krishna there to be unconquerable, others fled, leaving the lord of the Cedis, as weak animals flee from a lion, seeing Krishna with his powerful chariot.
यस्तं प्रतीपस्तरसा प्रत्युदीया- दाशंसमानो द्वैरथे वासुदेवम् । सोऽशेत कृष्णेन हतः परासु- र्वातेनेवोन्मथितः कर्णिकारः
Whoever, trusting in his strength, opposed Vasudeva in single combat, seeking glory, lay slain by Krishna, his life departed, like a Karnikara tree uprooted by the wind.
पराक्रमं मे यदवेदयन्त तेषामर्थे सञ्जय केशवस्य। अनुस्मरंस्तस्य कर्माणि विष्णो- र्गावल्गणे नाधिगच्छामि शान्तिम्
When they informed me of Krishna's prowess for their cause, Sanjaya, remembering the deeds of Vishnu, I find no peace, like a horse with a loose rein.
न जातु ताञ्छत्रुरन्यः सहेत येषां स स्यादग्रणीर्वृष्णिसिंहः । प्रवेपते मे हृदयं भयेन श्रुत्वा कृष्णावेकरथे समेतौ
No other enemy could withstand those for whom the lion of the Vrishnis is chief. My heart trembles with fear, hearing that Krishna and Arjuna have united in a single chariot.
न चेद्गच्छेत्सङ्गरं मन्दबुद्धि- स्ताभ्यां लभेच्छर्म तदा सुतो मे। नो चेत्कुरून्सञ्जय निर्दहेता- मिन्द्राविष्णू दैत्यसेनां यथैव
If my son, dull-witted, does not go to seek alliance with those two, then he should obtain a shield; otherwise, Sanjaya, if he does not burn the Kurus, Indra and Vishnu will destroy the demon army in the same way.
मते हि मे शक्रसमो धनञ्जयः सनातनो वृष्णिवीरश्च विष्णुः। धर्मारामो ह्रीनिषेवस्तरस्वी कुन्तीपुत्रः पाण्डवोऽजातशत्रुः
In my opinion, Dhananjaya is equal to Shakra; the eternal hero of the Vrishnis is Vishnu; devoted to righteousness, modesty, and vigor, the son of Kunti, the Pandava, is Ajatashatru.
