The prince, lord of the Kaliṅgas, is fierce in battle; let him be sent swiftly as a messenger—this pleases me.
This learned Brahmin is my priest, O King; let him be sent to Dhṛtarāṣṭra, and let the message be given to him.
Let the message be spoken to Duryodhana, to the king descended from Śāntanu, to Dhṛtarāṣṭra, and to Droṇa, foremost among charioteers.
When Drupada had spoken thus, the best among speakers, the lion of the Pṛṣṇi lineage, son of Vasudeva, spoke these words there.
This statement of the Somakas, mighty in responsibility, is appropriate and will accomplish the purpose of the king, the Pandava of immense energy.
And this should be done first by us, who desire wise conduct; for otherwise, if a man acts, he would be very foolish.
But our relationship with the Kurus and Pandavas is equal, as they live as they wish, both the Pandavas and those others.
They were brought here for marriage, and so were we all, as were you; when the marriage is accomplished, joyful, we will return to our homes.
You are the eldest among kings, both in age and in learning; we all are like disciples here to you, there is no doubt.
Dhṛtarāṣṭra always holds you in high regard; you are a friend to both teachers, Droṇa and Kṛpa.
Therefore, you should send today a message that serves the Pandavas' purpose; whatever you decide, send that for us all.
If the foremost of the Kurus acts justly and makes peace, there will not be a great destruction of the Kurus and Pandavas through enmity.
But if, out of pride and delusion, Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son does not act, and after sending others, later summons us to the assembly,
Then Duryodhana, foolish and slow, with his ministers and kinsmen, will meet his end, enraged at the wielder of Gāṇḍīva.
Then King Virāṭa, honoring the Vārṣṇeya, sent him to his home with his retinue and kinsmen.
When Kṛṣṇa had gone to Dvārakā, Yudhiṣṭhira at the forefront, along with Virāṭa the king, prepared everything for battle.
Then Virāṭa, together with his kinsmen, and Drupada, the king, sent messages to all the rulers of the earth.
At the word of the lion-like Kurus and the Matsya and Pāñcāla kings, the mighty rulers of the earth joyfully assembled.
Hearing this, a great force gathered for the sons of Pandu; and the sons of Dhritarashtra also assembled the kings.
O King, the whole earth became agitated because of the Kauravas and Pandavas; at that time, all the rulers of the land prepared for march.
Then the earth was crowded, filled with fourfold armies; the forces of those heroes came from all directions.
As if shaking this goddess earth with her mountains and forests, then the son of Drupada, steadfast in Yudhishthira's counsel, sent his own family priest, wise and aged, to the Kurus.
Among beings, living creatures are the highest; among living creatures, those endowed with intellect; among the intelligent, men are the best; and among men, the twice-born.
Among the twice-born, physicians are superior; among physicians, those of firm understanding; among the resolute, the doers; and among doers, those who speak of Brahman.
You are, in my view, foremost among the wise; you are distinguished by lineage, by age, by learning, and your wisdom is comparable to that of Shukra and Angiras.
And you know everything: how that Kaurava acted, and how Pandava Yudhishthira, son of Kunti, acted as well.
Though Dhritarashtra knows, the Pandavas were deceived by others; even when counseled by Vidura, he follows only his son.
For Shakuni, with cunning, challenged the son of Kunti—who did not know the dice, who was pure, and steadfast in the conduct of a kshatriya.
Thus having deceived King Yudhishthira, they will never willingly give back the kingdom under any circumstance.
But if you speak words of righteousness to Dhritarashtra, surely the minds of his warriors will be turned.
