न तु वाच्यो मृदुवचो धार्तराष्ट्रः कथंचन । नहि मार्दवसाध्योऽसौ पापबुद्धिर्मतो मम
Dhritarashtra's son should never be addressed with gentle speech; for, in my opinion, one of evil mind cannot be won over by mildness.
गर्दभे मार्दवं कुर्याद्गोषु तीक्ष्णं समाचरेत् । मृदु दुर्योधने वाक्यं यो ब्रूयात्पापचेतसि
One should be gentle with donkeys and harsh with cows; whoever speaks gently to Duryodhana, whose mind is evil, is mistaken.
मृदुं वै मन्यते पापो भाषमाणमशक्तिकम् । हितमर्थं न जानीयादबुद्धिर्मार्दवे सति
The wicked one considers a gentle speaker to be weak and powerless; a foolish person does not recognize beneficial counsel when it is spoken with mildness.
एतच्चैव करिष्यामो यत्नश्च क्रियतामिह । प्रस्थापयाम मित्रेभ्यो बलान्युद्योजयन्तु नः
Let us do this very thing, and let effort be made here; let us send word to our allies so that they may mobilize their forces for us.
शल्यस्य धृष्टकेतोश्च जयत्सेनस्य वा विभो । केकयानां च सर्वेषां दूता गच्छन्तु शीघ्रगाः
Let swift messengers go to Shalya, Dhrishtaketu, Jayatsena, and all the Kekaya princes, O mighty one.
स च दुर्योधनो नूनं प्रेषयिष्यति सर्वशः । पूर्वाभिपन्नाः सन्तश्च भजन्ते पूर्वचोदनम्
And surely Duryodhana will also send messengers everywhere; those who have been approached first tend to follow the earlier summons.
तत्वरध्वं नरेन्द्राणां पूर्वमेव प्रचोदने । महद्धि कार्यं वोढव्यमिति मे वर्तते मतिः
Therefore, urge the kings beforehand, for a great task must be undertaken—this is my conviction.
शल्यस्य प्रेष्यतां शीघ्रं ये च तस्यानुगा नृपाः । भगदत्ताय राज्ञे च पूर्वसागरवासिने
Let messengers be quickly sent to Shalya and the kings who follow him, to King Bhagadatta who dwells by the eastern sea,
अमितौजसे तथोग्राय हार्दिक्यायान्धकाय च। दीर्घप्रज्ञाय शूराय रोचमानाय वा विभो
To Amitaujas, the fierce Hardikya, the Andhaka, the wise and valiant Dirghaprajna, and to the illustrious Rocamana, O mighty one.
आनीयतां बृहन्तश्च सेनाबिन्दुश्च पार्थिवः । सेनजित्प्रतिबिन्ध्यश्च चित्रवर्मा सुवास्तुकः
Let Brihanta be brought, and Senabindu the king, as well as Senajit, Pratibindhya, Chitravarma, and Suvastuka.
बाह्लीको मुञ्जकेशश्च चैद्याधिपतिरेव च। सुपार्श्वश्च सुबाहुश्च पौरवश्च महारथः
The king of Bahlika, Munjakesha, the lord of the Chedis, Supārshva, Subahu, and the great chariot-warrior of the Pauravas.
शकानां पह्लवानां कर्णवेष्टश्च पार्थिवः ।। सुरारिश्च नदीजश्च कर्णवेष्टश्च पार्थिवः
The kings of the Shakas and Pahlavas, and Karnaveshta, as well as Suraari, Nadija, and Karnaveshta, the sovereigns.
नीलश्च वीरधर्मा च भूमिपालश्च वीर्यवान् । दुर्जयो दन्तवक्रश्च रुक्मी च जनमेजयः
Nila, steadfast in the warrior's code, the valiant ruler, Durjaya, Dantavakra, Rukmi, and Janamejaya.
आषाढो वायुवेगश्च पूर्वपाली च पार्थिवः । भूरितेजा देवकश्च एकलव्यः सहात्मजैः
Ashadha, Vayu-vega, Purvapali the king, the radiant Bhuritejas, Devaka, and Ekalavya with his sons.
कारूषकाश्च राजानः क्षेमधूर्तिश्च वीर्यवान् । काम्भोजा ऋषिका ये च पश्चिमानूपकाश्च ये
The kings of Karusha, the mighty Kshemadhurti, the Kambojas, the Rishikas, and those who dwell in the western and border regions.
जयत्सेनश्च काश्यश्च तथा पञ्चनदा नृपाः ।। जानकिश्च दुर्धर्षः पार्वतीयाश्च ये नृपाः
Jayatsena, the king of Kashi, the rulers of the five rivers, Janaki the indomitable, and the mountain kings.
जानकिश्च सुशर्मा च मणिमान्योतिमत्सकः। पांशुराष्ट्राधिपश्चैव धृष्टकेतुश्च वीर्यवान्
Janaki, Susharma, Maniman, Utimatsaka, the lord of Pansurashtra, and the mighty Dhrishtaketu.
तुण्डश्च दण्डधारश्च बृहत्सेनश्च वीर्यवान्। अपराजितो निषादश्च श्रेणिमान्वसुमानपि
Tunda, Dandadhara, the mighty Brihatsena, Aparajita, the Nishada, Shreniman, and also Vasuman.
बृहद्बलो महौजाश्च बाहुः परपुरंजयः । समुद्रसेनो राजा च सह पुत्रेण वीर्यवान्
Brihadbala, of great energy, Bahu the conqueror of enemy cities, and King Samudrasena, valiant together with his son.
उद्भवः क्षेमकश्चैव वाटधानश्च पार्थिवः । श्रुतायुश्च दृढायुश्च साल्वपुत्रश्च वीर्यवान्
Udbhava, Kshemaka, Vatadhana the king, Shrutayu, Dridhayu, and the valiant son of Salva.
कुमारश्च कलिङ्गानामीश्वरो युद्धदुर्मदः । एतेषां प्रेष्यतां शीघ्रमेतद्धि मम रोचते
The prince, lord of the Kaliṅgas, is fierce in battle; let him be sent swiftly as a messenger—this pleases me.
अयं च ब्राह्मणो विद्वान्मम राजन्पुरोहितः। प्रेष्यतां धृतराष्ट्राय वाक्यमस्मै प्रदीयताम्
This learned Brahmin is my priest, O King; let him be sent to Dhṛtarāṣṭra, and let the message be given to him.
यथा दुर्योधनो वाच्यो यथा सान्तनवो नृपः । धृतराष्ट्रो यथा वाच्यो द्रोणश्च रथिनां वरः
Let the message be spoken to Duryodhana, to the king descended from Śāntanu, to Dhṛtarāṣṭra, and to Droṇa, foremost among charioteers.
द्रुपदेनैवमुक्ते तु वाक्ये वाक्यविदां वरः। वसुदेवसुतस्तत्र पृष्णिसिंहोऽब्रवीदिदम्
When Drupada had spoken thus, the best among speakers, the lion of the Pṛṣṇi lineage, son of Vasudeva, spoke these words there.
उपपन्नमिदं वाक्यं सोमकानां धुरंधरे। अर्थसिद्धिकरं राज्ञः पाण्डवस्यामितौजसः
This statement of the Somakas, mighty in responsibility, is appropriate and will accomplish the purpose of the king, the Pandava of immense energy.
एतच्च पूर्वं कार्यं नः सुनीतिमभिकाङ्क्षताम्। अन्यथा ह्याचरन्कर्म पुरुषः स्यात्सुबालिशः
And this should be done first by us, who desire wise conduct; for otherwise, if a man acts, he would be very foolish.
किं तु संबन्धकं तुल्यमस्माकं कुरुपाण्डुषु। यथेष्टं वर्तमानेषु पाण्डवेषु च तेषु च
But our relationship with the Kurus and Pandavas is equal, as they live as they wish, both the Pandavas and those others.
ते विवाहार्थमानीता वयं सर्वे तथा भवान् । कृते विवाहे मुदिता गमिष्यामो गृहान्प्रति
They were brought here for marriage, and so were we all, as were you; when the marriage is accomplished, joyful, we will return to our homes.
भवान्वृद्धतमो राज्ञां वयसा च श्रुतेन च। शिष्यवत्ते वयं सर्वे भवामेह न संशयः
You are the eldest among kings, both in age and in learning; we all are like disciples here to you, there is no doubt.
भवन्तं धृतराष्ट्रश्च सततं बहु मन्यते। आचार्ययोः सखा चासि द्रोणस्य च कृपस्व च
Dhṛtarāṣṭra always holds you in high regard; you are a friend to both teachers, Droṇa and Kṛpa.
