उच्चावचान्मृगाञ्जघ्नुर्मेध्यांश्च शतशस्तथा। भक्ष्यान्नभोज्यपानानि प्रभूतान्यभ्यहारयन्
They slew hundreds of wild and sacrificial animals, and brought forth abundant foods, delicacies, and drinks.
गायनाख्यानशीलाश्च नटा वैतालिकास्तथा। स्तुवन्तस्तानुपातिष्ठन्सूताश्च सह मागधैः
Singers, storytellers, dancers, and bards, praising them, attended, along with charioteers and Magadha minstrels.
स्त्रियो वृद्धास्तरुण्यश्च उत्सवे तस्य मङ्गले। द्रौपद्यन्तःपुरे चैव विराटस्य गृहे स्त्रियः
Elderly women and young women, both at that festive and auspicious occasion, as well as the women in Draupadi’s inner quarters and in the house of Virata,
सुदेष्णां तु पुरस्कृत्य मत्स्यानामपि च स्त्रियः। आजग्मुश्चारुपीनाङ्ग्यः सुमृष्टमणिकुण्डलाः
Having Sudeṣṇā at their head, the women of the Matsya kingdom, adorned with beautiful limbs and well-polished jeweled earrings, arrived.
वर्णोपपन्नास्ता नार्यो रूपवन्तयः स्वलंकृताः। सर्वासामभवत्कृष्णा रूपेण वपुषाऽधिका
Those women, endowed with proper complexion and beauty, all splendidly adorned, yet among them all Krishna (Draupadi) surpassed in form and appearance.
परिवार्योत्तरां श्लाघ्यां राजपुत्रीमलंकृताम्। सुतामिव महेन्द्रस्य पुरस्कृत्योपतस्थिरे
They surrounded the praiseworthy and adorned princess Uttarā, and, placing her at the forefront as if she were the daughter of mighty Indra, attended upon her.
भृङ्गारुं तु समादाय सौवर्णं जलपूरितम्। पार्थस्य हस्ते सहसा सुतामिन्दीवरेक्षणाम्। स्नुषार्थं प्राक्षिपद्वारि विराटो वाहिनीपतिः
Then King Virata, lord of armies, suddenly took a golden vessel filled with water and, for the sake of his son’s bride, poured it into the hands of Partha, whose eyes resembled blue lotuses.
तां प्रत्यगृह्णाकौन्तेयः सुतस्यार्थे महामनाः । सौभद्राश्चानवद्याङ्गो विराटतनयां तदा
The high-minded son of Kunti accepted her for his son, and Saubhadra, flawless in form, took Virata’s daughter at that time.
तत्रातिष्ठद्गृहीत्वा तु रूपमिन्द्रास्य धारयन्। स्नुषां तां परिगृह्णानः कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः
There Yudhishthira, son of Kunti, assuming the appearance of Indra, stood holding the bride and accepted her as his daughter-in-law.
द्रुपदश्च विराटश्च शिखण्डी च महाबलः । युयुधानश्च शैब्यश्च धृष्टद्युम्नश्च सात्यकिः
Drupada, Virata, the mighty Shikhandi, Yuyudhana, Shaibya, Dhrishtadyumna, and Satyaki—
सप्तैतेऽक्षौहिणीपाला यज्वानो भूरिदक्षिणाः । पाण्डवं परिवार्यैते निवेशं चक्रिरे तदा
These seven, commanders of great divisions, performers of sacrifices, and generous with gifts, then surrounded the Pandava and took their places.
तत्रस्थायां तु सेनायां मात्स्यो धर्मभृतांवरः । प्रीतो दुहितरं गृह्य प्रददावभिमन्यवे
While the army stood there, the Matsya king, foremost among upholders of dharma, joyfully gave his daughter to Abhimanyu.
प्रतिगृह्योत्तरां पार्थः पुरस्कृत्य जनार्दनम् । विवाहं कारयामास सौभद्रस्य महात्मनः
Having received Uttara, Partha, with Janardana at the forefront, arranged the wedding of the great-souled Saubhadra.
ततो विवाहो ववृधे स्फीतः सर्वगुणान्वितः । सौभद्रस्याद्भुतं कर्म पितुस्तव पितुस्तदा
Then the wedding flourished, abundant and endowed with all virtues—Saubhadra’s wondrous deed, O son, at that time.
धौम्यः शिष्यैः परिवृतो जुहावाग्नौ विधानतः । अग्निं प्रदक्षिणीकुर्वन्सौभद्रः पाणिमग्रहीत्
Dhaumya, surrounded by his disciples, performed the fire ritual according to rule; Saubhadra, circling the fire, took her hand.
ततः पार्थाय संहृष्टो मात्स्यराजो धनं महत्। तस्मै शतसहस्राणि हयानां वातरंहसाम्
Then the delighted king of the Matsyas gave great wealth to Partha: one hundred thousand swift horses.
द्वे च नागशते मुख्ये धनं बहुविधं तदा। प्रादान्मात्स्यपतिर्हृष्टः कन्याधनमनुत्तमम्
And two hundred foremost elephants, and much wealth of various kinds—the Matsya lord, rejoicing, gave the unsurpassed bridal gifts.
पारिबर्हं च पार्थेभ्यः प्रददौ मत्स्यपुङ्गवः । कृष्णेन सह कौन्तेयः प्रत्यगृह्णात्प्रभूतवत्
The chief of the Matsyas also gave household gifts to the Parthas; together with Krishna, the son of Kunti received them in abundance.
कृते विवाहे तु तदा धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। ब्राह्मणेभ्यो ददौ वित्तं यदुपाहरदच्युतः
When the wedding had been performed, Yudhishthira, son of Dharma, gave to the Brahmins the wealth that Acyuta had brought.
गोसहस्राणि वस्त्राणि रत्नानि विविधानि च। भूषणानि च सर्वाणि यानानि शयनानि च
A thousand cows, garments, various jewels, all kinds of ornaments, vehicles, and beds.
नागरान्प्रीतिभिर्दिव्यैस्तर्पयामास भूपतिः
The king gratified the citizens with divine gifts and pleasures.
तन्महोत्सवसंकाशं हृष्टपुष्टजनाकुलम्। नगरं मत्स्यराजस्य शुशुभे भरतर्षभ
That city of Matsya's king, filled with joyful and prosperous people, shone like a grand festival, O best of the Bharatas.
पुरोहितैरमात्यैश्च पौरैर्जानपदैः सह। विराटो नृपतिः श्रीमान्सौभद्रायाभिमन्यवे । तां सुतामुत्तरां दत्त्वा मुमुदे परमं तदा
With priests, ministers, townsfolk, and countrymen, King Virata, glorious, gave his daughter Uttara to Abhimanyu, son of Subhadra, and rejoiced greatly at that time.
वृत्ते विवाहे हृष्टात्मा यदुवाच युधिष्ठिरः। तत्सर्वं कथयस्वेह कृतवन्तो यदुत्तरम्
When the marriage was completed, Yudhishthira, his heart delighted, spoke: 'Tell me here everything you have accomplished, O Uttara.'
कृत्वा विवाहं तु कुरुप्रवीरा- स्तदाऽभिमन्योर्मुदिताः सपक्षाः। विश्रम्य रात्रावुषसि प्रतीताः सभां विराटस्य ततोऽभिजग्मुः
Having performed the marriage, the mighty Kurus, joyful with their allies, rested through the night; at dawn, confident, they proceeded to the hall of Virata.
सभा तु सा मत्स्यपतेः समृद्धा मणिप्रवेकोत्तमरत्नचित्रा। न्यस्तासना माल्यवती सुगन्धा तामभ्ययुस्ते नरराजवर्याः
That hall of the Matsya king was splendid, adorned with gems, pearls, and the finest jewels; furnished with fragrant garlands and seats, the foremost kings approached it.
अथासनान्याविशतां पुरस्ता- दुभौ विराटद्रुपदौ नरेन्द्रौ। वृद्धौ च मान्यौ पृथिवीपतीनां पित्रा समं तमजनार्दनौ च
Then, at the front, both Virata and Drupada, the sovereigns, aged and honored among the kings, together with their fathers and Janardana, took their seats.
पाञ्चालराजस्य समीपतस्तु शिनिप्रवीरः सहरौहिणेयः मत्स्यस्य राज्ञस्तु सुसन्निकृष्टौ जनार्दनश्चैव युधिष्ठिरश्च
Near the Panchala king sat the mighty Shini and the son of Rohini; and very close to the Matsya king sat Janardana and Yudhishthira.
सुताश्च सर्वे द्रुपदस्य राज्ञो भीमार्जुनौ माद्रवतीसुतौ च। प्रद्युम्नसाम्बौ च युधि प्रवीरौ विराटपुत्रैश्च सहाभिमन्युः
All the sons of King Drupada, Bhima and Arjuna, the sons of Madri, Pradyumna and Samba, those mighty warriors, along with Abhimanyu and the sons of Virata, were present.
सर्वे च शूराः पितृभिः समाना वीर्येण रूपेण बलेन चैव। उपाविशन्द्रौपदेयाः कुमाराः सुवर्णचित्रेषु वरासनेषु
All the valiant sons, equal to their fathers in strength, appearance, and might, the sons of Draupadi, took their seats on golden, decorated, excellent chairs.
