अन्तःपुरेऽहमुषितः सदा पश्यन्सुतां तव। सहस्यं च प्रकाशं च विश्वस्ता पितृवन्मयि
I have always lived in the inner chambers, seeing your daughter; she has trusted me openly and privately, as one would trust a father.
प्रियो बहुमतश्चाहं नर्तने गीतवादिते। आचार्यवच्च मां नित्यं मन्यते दुहिता तव
I am dear and highly regarded by her in dance, song, and music; your daughter always considers me as her teacher.
वयस्यया तया राजन्सह संवत्सरोषितः । अतिशङ्का ततोऽस्थाने तव लोकस्य च प्रभो
With that companion, O king, I have lived for a year; therefore, excessive suspicion arose in you and your people, O lord.
तस्मादामन्त्रये त्वाऽद्य पुत्रार्थं मे विशांपते। सुद्धं जितेन्द्रियं मन्ये तस्याः शुद्धिः कृता मया
Therefore, I address you today, O lord of the people, for the sake of your son; I consider her pure, having mastered my senses, and I have ensured her purity.
स्नुषायां दुहितुर्वापि पुत्रे चात्मनि वा पुनः । अतिशङ्कां न पश्यामि तेन शुद्धिर्भविष्यति
Whether as daughter-in-law, daughter, son, or myself, I see no excessive suspicion; thus, purity will be maintained.
अभिषङ्गादहं भीतो मिथ्याचारात्परंतप । स्रुषार्थमुत्तरां राजन्प्रतिगृह्णामि ते सुताम्
Out of fear of slander and false conduct, O subduer of foes, I accept Uttara, your daughter, for the sake of my disciple.
स्वस्त्रीयो वासुदेवस्य साक्षाद्देवसुतो यथा। दयितश्चक्रहस्तस्य बलवानस्त्रकोविदः
He is related to Vasudeva's family, as if directly descended from the gods; beloved of the wielder of the discus, strong and skilled in weapons.
अभिमन्युर्गहाबाहुः पुत्रो मम विशांपते । जामाता तव युक्तो वै भर्ता च दुहितुस्तव
Abhimanyu, mighty-armed, is my son, O lord of the people; he is your rightful son-in-law and the proper husband for your daughter.
उपपन्नं कुरुश्रेष्ठे कुन्तीपुत्रे धनंजये। सदैव धर्मनित्यश्च ज्ञातज्ञानश्च पाण्डवः
The son of Kunti, Dhananjaya, is worthy among the Kurus, always devoted to righteousness, and possessed of discernment and knowledge, O Pandava.
यत्कृत्यं मन्यसे पार्थ क्रियतां तदनन्तरम्। सर्वे कामाः समृद्धा मे संबन्धी यस्य मेऽर्जुनः
Whatever you consider should be done, O Partha, let it be done at once; all my desires are fulfilled, for Arjuna is my kinsman.
एवं ब्रुवति राजेन्द्रे कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। अन्वजानत संबन्धं समये कृष्णमात्स्ययोः
As the king spoke thus, Yudhishthira, son of Kunti, recognized the alliance between Krishna and the Matsya king at that moment.
दूतान्सर्वेषु मित्रेषु वासुदेवे च भारत। प्रेषयामास कौन्तेयो विराटश्च महीपतिः
The son of Kunti and King Virata, O Bharata, sent messengers to all their friends and to Vasudeva.
प्रतिगृह्य स्नुषार्थं वै दर्शयन्व्रतमात्मनः । शीलशौचसमाचारं लोकस्यावेद्य फल्गुनः
Having accepted for the sake of his daughter-in-law, Phalguna displayed his own vow, character, purity, and conduct, making them known to the people.
लोके विख्याप्य माहात्म्यं यशश्च स परंतपः । कृतार्थः शुचिरव्यग्रस्तुष्टिमानभवत्तदा
Having made his greatness and fame known in the world, that subduer of foes, accomplished and pure, free from anxiety, was then filled with satisfaction.
राजन्प्रीतोस्मि भद्रं ते सखा मेऽसि परन्तप। सुखमध्युषिताः सर्वे अज्ञातास्त्वयि पार्थिव
O King, I am pleased with you; blessings upon you. You are my friend, O subduer of enemies. All have dwelt happily and unrecognized with you, O ruler.
विराटनगरे राजा धर्मात्मा संशितव्रतः । पूजितश्चाभिषिक्तश्च रत्नैश्च शतशोर्चितः
In the city of Virata, the righteous king, firm in his vows, was honored, anointed, and adorned with hundreds of jewels.
तथा ब्रुवन्तं प्रसमीक्ष्य राजा परं प्रहृष्टः स्वजनेन तेन। स्नेहात्परिष्वज्य नृपो भुजाभ्यां ददौ महार्थं कुरुपाण्डवानाम्
Seeing him speak thus, the king, greatly delighted along with his people, embraced him out of affection and gave great wealth to the Kurus and Pandavas.
समादिशन्दूतमथो समग्राः
Then, instructing the messenger, he gave all the necessary orders.
युधिष्ठिरश्चापि सुसंग्रहृष्टो दुर्योधनाद्दूतमपश्यदागतम्। स चाब्रवीद्धर्मराजं समेत्य युधिष्ठिरं पाण्डवमुग्रवीर्यम्
Yudhishthira, also greatly pleased, saw a messenger who had come from Duryodhana; and that messenger, having approached, spoke to Yudhishthira, the mighty Pandava king.
धनञ्जयेनासि पुनर्वनाय प्रव्राजितः समये तिष्ठ पार्थः। त्रयोदशे ह्येव किरीटमाली संवत्सरे पाण्डवेयोऽद्य दृष्टः
You have again been sent to the forest by Dhananjaya, O Partha; remain for the appointed time. For today, in the thirteenth year, the Pandava with the jeweled diadem has been seen.
ततोऽब्रवीद्धर्मसुतः प्रहस्य क्षिप्रं गत्वा ब्रूहि सुयोधनं तम्। पितामहः शान्तनवो ब्रवीतु पूर्णो न पूर्णोऽद्य त्रयोदशो नः
Then the son of Dharma, smiling, said: 'Go quickly and tell that Suyodhana this: Let Bhishma, son of Shantanu, declare whether our thirteenth year is complete or not.'
संवत्सरात्ते तु धनञ्जयेन विष्फारितं गाण्डिवमाजिमध्ये। पूर्णो न पूर्णो न इति ब्रवीतु यदस्य सत्यं मम तत्प्रमाणम्
Let Bhishma declare whether the Gandiva was strung in the midst of battle by Dhananjaya after the year was complete or not; whatever he says in truth, let that be the standard for me.
तेनैवमुक्तः स निवृत्य दूतो दुर्योधनं प्राप्य शशंस तत्त्वम्
Thus addressed, the messenger returned and reported the matter in full to Duryodhana.
समेत्य दूतेन स राजपुत्रो दुर्योधनो मन्त्रयामास तत्र। भीष्मेण कर्णेन कृपेण चैव द्रोणेन भूरिश्रवसा च सार्धम्
Having met with the messenger, Prince Duryodhana then consulted there with Bhishma, Karna, Kripa, Drona, and Bhurishrava.
संमन्त्र्य रात्रौ बहुभिः सुहृद्भि- र्भीष्मोऽब्रवीद्धार्तराष्ट्रं महात्मा । तीर्णप्रतिज्ञेन धनंजयेन विष्फारितं गाण्डिवमाजिमध्ये
After conferring at night with many friends, the great-souled Bhishma said to Duryodhana: 'The Gandiva was strung in the midst of battle by Dhananjaya, who has fulfilled his vow.'
नेच्छन्त्यसत्येन सुरेन्द्रलोकं पाण्डोः सुता ब्रह्मणश्चापि लोकम्। तथ्यं च ते पथ्यमहं ब्रवीमि स्वर्ग्यं यशस्यं परलोकपथ्यम्
The sons of Pandu do not wish to attain the world of Indra or even the world of Brahma by falsehood; and I tell you what is true and beneficial, leading to heaven, fame, and the next world.
कुन्तीसुतैस्त्वं समुपैहि सन्धिं भुङ्क्ष्व स्वराज्यं सह पाण्डवेयैः। युध्यस्व नोचेत्स्थिरबुद्धिराजौ कुन्तीसुतैर्यद्यपि राज्यमिच्छेः
Make peace with the sons of Kunti and enjoy your rightful kingdom together with the Pandavas; or, if your mind is resolute in battle, fight them—yet if you desire the kingdom, even then you must contend with the sons of Kunti.
आन्तं न शक्यं कपटेन भोक्तुं राज्यं परेषां महतां बलीनाम्। जित्वा शत्रून्भुङ्क्ष्व राज्यं समग्रं हतो भवान्भोक्ष्यति वज्रिलोकम्
A kingdom belonging to mighty and powerful others cannot be enjoyed through deceit; conquer your enemies and then enjoy the entire realm, or, if slain, you will attain the world of Indra.
हतोस्मि तैर्वा सुरलोकमेमि
If I am slain by them, I shall go to the world of the gods.
ते धार्तराष्ट्राः समयं निशम्य तीर्णप्रतिज्ञस्य धनंजयस्य संचिन्त्य सर्वे सहिताः सुहृद्भिः सपार्थिवाः स्वानि गृहाणि जग्मुः
Hearing this agreement, all the Dhartarashtras, together with their friends and allied kings, after reflecting on the vow fulfilled by Dhananjaya, returned to their own homes.
