Hearing these words, the valiant king of the Matsyas embraced Dhananjaya and all the Pandavas.
The king bowed to Dharmaraja, who was consecrated in the kingdom; Virata, commander of the army, could not be satisfied by seeing them.
There is no doubt, O kings, that you have not made any distinction.
Hearing the words of the great-souled king Virata, Uttara, who had sought refuge with Yudhishthira, replied thus:
At this fitting time, I wish to conciliate the son of Pandu, who is radiant, strong, heroic, lord of kings, and powerful.
And I will offer my sister Uttara to Partha, the subduer of foes, after bowing to him; then we shall remain as his dependents.
With all our ministers, we shall approach Kunti's son Yudhishthira, seeking his favor; O king, what should we do?
O king, you were captured in battle and released by him; through the strength of their arms, these cows were won back by you.
Because the Kurus were defeated in battle by him of immeasurable energy, all this was accomplished by Kunti's son Yudhishthira.
The Pandavas are worthy of worship, honor, respect, and rising to greet; they deserve to be saluted and welcomed at the proper time, in my opinion.
The Pandavas are to be honored and revered, for they are greatly fortunate; indeed, if angered, they would leave nothing remaining, being like venomous serpents.
Therefore, let us quickly approach Kunti's son Yudhishthira; there, together with the great-souled Parthas, I shall seek his favor.
Placing Uttara in front, with her hair washed and hands joined, I know all about their strength and valor, their noble birth, and the prowess of Phalguna.
Hearing Uttara speak of the Pandavas, Virata, the destroyer of foes, observing Uttara, considered that the time had come.
Then Virata, with his ministers, son, and relatives, placing Uttara in front, with her hair washed and hands joined, quickly fell to the ground before the Pandava.
May the great king Yudhishthira, son of Dharma, be gracious; because of his concealed appearance, he was not recognized, like fire covered with grass.
With my son and attendants, I have come to you with my head bowed.
Whatever disrespect was shown to the king by us out of ignorance, treating you lightly as ordinary men do, O knower of dharma, O lover of righteousness, you ought to forgive it all.
This kingdom, city, and realm of mine, O king, with its treasury and army, I surrender to you; I am under your authority, O king, and with all my ministers, we have sought your protection.
Seeing the king fallen on the ground with his relatives, Dharmaraja, who sees the next world, spoke these words, his anger, grief, and envy gone.
Having considered, I am satisfied, O foremost among kings.
This has been endured, O mighty-armed one, as you speak to me, O ruler; and I see nothing at all improper in you, O lord of men.
Then Virata, exceedingly pleased, came together with the king and made an agreement; and the great-souled one entrusted the entire kingdom to him, along with the treasury, the city, and all its attendants.
What I will say to you today, do not doubt, Yudhishthira: this city, this realm, its people, and its women—I will give to you all; I will partake only of what remains.
I have long enjoyed pleasures, O king, and lived happily; but having given the kingdom to you, I will depart to the forest.
Let Savyasachi Dhananjaya accept Uttara; for he is the rightful husband for her, O best among men.
Thus addressed, the king of righteousness looked at Arjuna, the conqueror of forests; and Arjuna, understanding the words of Matsya, spoke.
We have come from the forest and do not accept your kingdom; but we will accept the kingdom from kings like Duryodhana and others.
I accept, O king, your daughter for my disciple; for there is indeed a proper connection between the Matsya and Bharata lineages.
Why, O best of Pandavas, do you wish to accept my daughter as wife, though I have not given her to you here?
