By his shower of arrows, even the rain was checked, unconquerable as he is; all the kings of the earth have paid him tribute.
He assumed the guise of a woman in your palace, O king; he whom they call Brihannala is Arjuna, foremost among conquerors.
We all dwelled happily in your palace, O king, hidden in exile, like offspring in the womb.
When Arjuna revealed to your heroes that these were the five Pandavas, then Uttara again showed those Parthas.
This one, with a body of pure golden hue like Jambunada gold, great and majestic like a lion, fierce and broad-eyed, with long, coppery eyes—he is the king of the Kurus.
Here is another, moving like a maddened elephant, his complexion pure and radiant like refined gold, broad-shouldered, with heavy, long arms—behold him, the mighty Vrikodara.
And beside him stands a youthful hero, dark in complexion, bearing a great bow, resembling the leader of an elephant herd, with lion-like raised shoulders, walking like a king elephant, his eyes wide as lotuses—this is Arjuna.
Near the king are two foremost men, like Yama and Vishnu, resembling Indra in strength; in the world of men, none equals them in appearance, power, or character.
At their side stands a woman whose limbs are adorned with gold, radiant as if light itself has taken form, fair as Gauri, with the hue of a blue lotus, like a divine goddess; Krishna stands there, manifest as Lakshmi herself.
Thus, having presented those five Pandavas to the king, the Virata spoke of Arjuna's valor.
This is the one who, in the midst of his enemies, moved like a lion among deer, roaming through chariot ranks, striking down both the foremost and the last of them.
By him, elephants with golden armor, resembling great clouds, were struck in battle and fell to the earth with their tusks.
By him, cows were recovered, the Kurus defeated in battle; the sound of his conch deafened my ears.
When I recall the sound of his bow, my skin bristles; the banner with the monkey, roaring with its followers, filled the field.
I did not see him taking up fierce arrows, nor releasing volleys, nor drawing his bow in battle.
Yet the arrows released from his bow, feathered and unfeathered, fell unseen in battle; neither the shafts nor the blood-drinking darts could be discerned.
Bodies of warriors, both horsemen and charioteers, were seen with heads, arms, thighs, and chests severed by sharp arrows.
By him, a river of blood flowed there, terrifying in form; even now, remembering it, my mind trembles like a plantain tree shaken by a fierce wind.
By this hero, O king, the chariots led by Bhishma and Drona, along with Duryodhana, were defeated by his mighty deeds.
This son of the gods stopped me as I fled in fear; by the strength of his arms, I survived and returned to my city.
Hearing these words, the valiant king of the Matsyas embraced Dhananjaya and all the Pandavas.
The king bowed to Dharmaraja, who was consecrated in the kingdom; Virata, commander of the army, could not be satisfied by seeing them.
There is no doubt, O kings, that you have not made any distinction.
Hearing the words of the great-souled king Virata, Uttara, who had sought refuge with Yudhishthira, replied thus:
At this fitting time, I wish to conciliate the son of Pandu, who is radiant, strong, heroic, lord of kings, and powerful.
And I will offer my sister Uttara to Partha, the subduer of foes, after bowing to him; then we shall remain as his dependents.
With all our ministers, we shall approach Kunti's son Yudhishthira, seeking his favor; O king, what should we do?
O king, you were captured in battle and released by him; through the strength of their arms, these cows were won back by you.
Because the Kurus were defeated in battle by him of immeasurable energy, all this was accomplished by Kunti's son Yudhishthira.
The Pandavas are worthy of worship, honor, respect, and rising to greet; they deserve to be saluted and welcomed at the proper time, in my opinion.
